• 9) Even though Katniss scored high with the judges, she still thinks of herself as an underdog, and tiny Rue is also not expecting to hang around too long. They band together for support (girl power!), they really don't want to kill other children, but they try to use their well-earned childhood skills to escape death from the others. I think Katniss also sees Prim in Rue, and her protective instincts are strong due to that association. The other groups, especially the careers, band together for better efficiency in killing, and they use others to obtain and protect food supplies. • 10) When things get too slow or boring, the gamemakers feel they need to keep up the entertainment factor by adding fire, beasties and whatever else I don't remember to ramp up the game. A major manipulation is when they say there can be two winners if from the same district, then reneg on that deal. That allowed the tributes of a few districts to safely band together for a time. Katniss definitely is playing to the camera to receive gifties, and her affectionate moments with Peeta are mostly for the audience, though she surprises herself at the emotions that are growing towards him.
