Chapter 3

The trip to Burgundy takes Nicholas across the Alps, and through Geneva in foul weather, to the house of Yvonnet de Damparis, where Marian spent her last days. At least the lady of Damparis treats him as a bereaved husband, and not one whose loss was only monetary. The next stop is Dijon and the crypt that was Marian’s final resting place, where he is surprised to see that Marian had Nicholas’ true parentage engraved on her coffin (Simon certainly wouldn’t like that!).

Nicholas’ arrival at Bruges is less welcoming and he is refused entrance to the house on Spangnaerts Street, on orders from Tilde. Tilde does speak to him through the gate, refusing him to see Julius or Godsalc, or gather his belongings, but talks of the mistress he must see, one lady called Primaflora.

Late at night, Nicholas walks to Spangnaerts Street and finds his passage into the house eased by rope and mattress to climb over the spiked wall, to meet Julius, Godsalc and Loppe. Despite his poor treatment, Nicholas is concerned that the Charetty business thrive and that any of his future pursuits do not provide competition. Although Tilde and Catherine squabble, they are united in business and opposition to Nicholas. They don’t feel Simon is a threat to the girls, but his wife, Katelina, no doubt wants to cause trouble for Nicholas.

Nicholas visits Marian’s office, the place where their real relationship was created and shaped. He wants a memento of Marian, but realizes he has stayed too long, and is caught trying to flee the house.

Chapter 4

Nicholas spends the night in prison. He doesn’t expect help from Godsalc et al, Tilde must think she can count on them entirely, but he thinks the people of Bruges should hold no grudges against him, though reconsidering, he is able to make a long list of people who might not wish him the best. Luckily, his friend Anselm Adorne is the nearest magistrate, and they are able to talk frankly about Marian and her daughters, and Anselm informs Nicholas that Tilde is afraid that he will inherit the Charetty business, and that contributes to her nasty behaviour towards him. Primaflora’s name is also mentioned and Nicholas makes sure to refute any association with her, considering her a bribe from Carlotta.

Adorne and Nicholas discuss Nicholas’ future endeavours – banking, trade, fighting with the mercenaries? They speak of conflicting interests (Nicholas represents the Venetians, Anselm is Genoese), both previous and future, and hope to remain friends, though Anselm will not interfere unless a difficult situation becomes life or death to Nicholas.

Nicholas is told to leave Bruges quickly, and the expectation of escorting Primaflora impels him to hurry, but he is side-tracked by a visit with the painter, Colard Mansion, and becomes happily drunk for the first time since the death of Marian. Food and ale arrives, and with it, Primaflora, who enchants the artist, Colard, with her beauty. Colard answers Primaflora’s questions about Nicholas’ past and mentions Katelina (‘a woman in Anjou’ is Nicholas’ only comment regarding her). Although she has been sent by Carlotta to coerce Nicholas to fight for the queen, Primaflora wants to escape the clutches of Carlotta and will travel with Nicholas anywhere, even onto the battlefield in Italy, if that’s where he intends to go.

1. Tilde doesn’t allow Nicholas to even enter the property on Spangnaerts Street. What is she so terribly afraid of?

2. Nicholas notices the Charetty blue colour in Marian’s office and considers himself colourless now, and a self-pitying ass. After all his successes, why does Nicholas feel such low self-esteem?

3. Anselm Adorne considers Nicholas’ interest in joining Astorre and the mercenaries ‘a failure of fate’. What does he mean by that?

4. Who is the Nicholas we see through the eyes of Colard Mansion? Anselm Adorne?
