The Count of Urbino, Federico da Montefeltro. Portrait by Piero della Francesca. Federico had his nasal bridge removed to widen his left eyesight, after an accident to his right eye.

Chapter 5

The next day Nicholas leaves Bruges, accompanied by Thomas, Primaflora and her maid, and a small contingent of soldiers, but by morning, Nicholas has quietly escaped, leaving Thomas a good sum of money to take Primaflora wherever she wants to go.

Nicholas is alone for the first time in his life, and allowing chance to dictate his route. The freedom to explore when curious, observe closely when interested, forget commerce and take in other things that make the world go round, frees Nicholas so that his anxiety lessons and his heart lightens. He still does not ease himself with a quick tumble, having only relieved himself the one night with Violante after hearing of the death of Marian.

Nicholas makes his way to Anjou, where Katelina and her father-in-law, Jordan de Riberac, are also in residence. Katelina does not enjoy the company of her fat, vindictive father-in-law, but she is there to learn the business, filling in where her husband, Simon, is lacking. They attend the court of Rene, King of Sicily, Count of Provence and Duke of Anjou whose son, John, Duke of Calabria, is in Italy, fighting for control of Naples. Katelina is openly supportive of Simon, and secretly hating Nicholas, a hate which is fostered by de Riberac.

Nicholas finds the camp of the Count of Urbino and meets Tobie, and there is a rather uncomfortable exchange between them. The Count is happy for the help of Nicholas, and Astorre’s troops if they come, in his fight against John of Calabria’s supporter, Malatesta. Tobie and Nicholas reconcile their differences for now.

Chapter 6

Upon approach of the Count of Urbino’s army, Malatesta and his troops make a run for it, and the Count’s army chases them through the night, with a surprise confrontation by the Cesano river and muddy riverbank. Urbino’s army is victorious. Tobie and Nicholas analyze each other’s motivations and attractions to the battlefield and Nicholas plots to use his ship to transport troops to fight Piccinino, another of John of Calabria’s supporters.

1. Why is Nicholas retaining his monkish life without the solace that he used to find in women? Is he still grieving? Or is it something else?

2. Nicholas is genuinely pleased to see Tobie (as attested by the ‘two familiar pockets’ appearing on his cheeks), but is the feeling mutual?

3. Tobie seems awfully well informed of Nicholas’ business and thoughts regarding Katelina. How so?
