Subject: I kind of think that in a way she's right, he wants to still believe in Simon somehow, but I don't think he's anywhere near naive enough to think that family means him no harm, not at this point.

Marian's paleness could be a combination of many things -- stress over Catherine, running the business without Nicholas there and worrying over what may be happening with him; of course there are also the possibilities of illness and pregnancy (I'm not sure on that last one, though, as Nicholas may have been gone too long at this point for her not to be obviously pregnant).
