Chapter 33

Julius arrives safely at Kerasous with the camels and purchases, while in Trebizond, Nicholas’ workmen prepare the city for a siege. The Emperor is happily playing at his summer palace, frequently asking Nicholas to join his gatherings.

The Ciaretta returns to Trebizond, anchoring out to sea, and le Grant brings news that no extra armies are expected in the fight against the Sultan. The Turkish fleet is in Sinope and the Turkish land army is approaching. Uzum Hasan needs to be warned not to count on extra support.

Nicholas speaks to the Emperor and says that he feels a siege on Trebizond is unlikely this year. He meets privately with Violante, their first time totally alone, and he suppresses interest in her body. But they are not alone, Catherine is in attendance.

Catherine blames Nicholas for ruining Pagano, who now frightens her with his temper. She also finds Pagano’s constant penchant for whoring upsetting and despicable. Nicholas believes that Doria has kept unsold merchandise on his ship so he isn’t as destitute as she thinks, but she still wants out.

Catherine leaves and Nicholas and Violante discuss how Catherine has been coached by her husband. An interesting conversation follows regarding the weapons and armour aboard the Doria, the problem of Catherine, and how much Violante seeks Nicholas in her bed. Nicholas remains firm in his resolve to stay faithful to Marion.

On the 15th of June, Sinope surrenders to the Sultan and he is given control of the emir’s fleet and copper mines. The Sultan’s army then leaves to conquer lands belonging to Uzum Hasan and Trebizond feels relatively secure from attack for some time to come.

The Ciaretta departs for Kerasous with le Grant and a box of precious books. Catherine finally decides to leave Doria, her ‘philandering failure’, and Nicholas hatches a plan for her escape.

Q1. Who is really the ‘toymaster’ – Violante or Nicholas?

Q2. Is Nicholas’ refusal of Violante’s advances only to be faithful to his wife, or has he other motives?
