Chapter 34

It is the feast of St. Eugenios, patron saint of Trebizond, in late June, with all the pomp and opulence and gamesmanship seen during the Easter season. Nicholas is to ride on Doria's tzukanion team in a recreation of an ancient Persian battle. Men against women; Violante leads the opposing team, and Catherine rides with her.

With mallets flying, tzukanion appears to be the earliest form of polo. A dangerous game. Nicholas tells Tobie that he is to refrain from offering medical intervention, should it come to that.

Accidents can happen on the field. Due to the speed of the horses, it is often difficult to determine which player caused the accident. Suddenly, Nicholas is on the ground and his horse appears to be injured by a mallet. Violante kneels at his side. Another rider is being carried off the field. It is Catherine. She has been taken to the Palace. Doria is told she was trampled by horses but will survive.

The injured Nicholas is attended to by his entourage. He is lucky to be alive. Doria must have been responsible for the attack, but it served its purpose; Catherine was jettisoned from Doria's clutches during the confusion. Violante had seen to it all.

Chapter 35

The Turkish fleet has arrived. War was upon them.

Doria learns that Catherine had never been seriously injured, that it was all a ploy to get her away from him. Nicholas is not threatened by Doria's attempts to frame him.

The people of Trebizond flee their homes for the safety of the Citadel. Nicholas, Astorre and all the others feel their spirits rise at the prospect of war.

Nicholas and all of Trebizond watch as the flotilla arrives carrying Ottoman flags. “Watch out for tripwires and levers,” he said. Nicholas and Astorre had set up numerous traps of explosives for the invaders, and all of it works. And yet, brilliant plan that it was, it merely delays the inevitable; the siege is upon them.

Chapter 36

Meanwhile, the rest of the world continues to spin. King Charles VII dies, and the new King Louis XI is installed. Refugees friendly to Louis begin to return to France, including Fat Father Jordan. Gregorio is in pursuit of Marian. The profit from Nicholas' alum will easily repay the debit to the Medici for the ship.

A week into the siege at Trebizond, the people were experiencing constant explosions and drumbeats 24 hours a day. Nicholas had made arrangements in advance for provisions to be stored. The Emperor is pleased and offers carnal companionship to Nicholas, from which Nicholas refrains. Nicholas will celebrate when Trebizond wins its freedom; until then, he must remain chaste.

Morning strategy meetings with the Emperor ensue. It is learned that Uzum Hasan and his army are not coming to the rescue of Trebizond. Word from a reliable source tells the Emperor that Uzum Hasan has brought his mother, Sara Khatun, to meet with the Turkish Sultan to ask for leniency in return for their neutrality.

Nicholas suggests to the Emperor that Trebizond may be safe from the Turkish invaders; it offers a highly valued merchant center. The Emperor and his advisors react with caution to Nicholas' point of view.

The chapter ends with Nicholas, his latest plans seemingly quashed, telling Godscalc that he is willing to personally appeal to the Sultan.

Q1) What is it about Nicholas that makes him appealing to men and women alike?

Q2) What do you make of Violante at this stage, and her willingness to play a role in rescuing Catherine? What might her ulterior motives be?

Q3) Any speculations on what news Nicholas was awaiting at the end of Chapter 36?
