Subject: Q2. I think the way fairies are represented in this book, is close to what the changelings would have been in traditional lore. They were small, sickly, etc. Often people thought they could tell because of the look in their eyes, that their child had been stolen away and replaced by a changeling. Fairies weren't lovely, ethereal creatures in the old lore, it wasn't until the Victorians came along that they became pretty and beautifully coloured etc. The Victorians felt traditional fairies were too frightening for children, so they changed them into something far lighter and sweeter. Originally that's not how they were perceived.
