Light hearted short stories for cancer patient?

Hello everyone, happy to have found this spot, hope someone can help me out.

I am looking for some suggestions for light hearted/inspirational short stories or children's books. Emphasis on short, three hundred page novels won't work for my needs. They will end up as audiobooks so good art work is wasted on me.

Its for my mom who has breast and bone cancer. She has had a lot of chemo and radiation to her head and now has a very hard time getting out of bed or concentrating for any period of time. Furthermore, English isn't her first or second language so heavy material is just going to confuse her.

I don't think she will be interested in any like "chicken soup for the cancerous soul" or blatent self help books. She has enough of those. And they don't have to focus on overcoming cancer. I am hoping to find some titles that will comfort and make her smile. She is so bored being bed all day and I want her to have some small comforts to raise her spirits.

Something akin to the short stories by Robert Munch or 'Alex and the Amazing Lemonade Stand' is what I hope to find more of. Though I am hoping to find some that aren't written specifically for children. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Patricia! What came to mind was Canadian author Stuart McLean and 'Stories from the Vinyl Cafe' and 'Vinyl Cafe Unplugged'. McLean also has (or had, not sure of present status) a radio show and he tells the stories on the air. I haven't actually read the two books mentioned (there are probably more) but I've heard him on the radio and have obtained audio versions that DH and I have enjoyed immensely while on our travels. They are short stories about a couple, their kids and dog and the plights of an average family, and they are hilarious! I hope you can locate them wherever you live. Maybe a collection of fairy tales? Or some classic children's stories? I know that my 10 year old read James & the Giant Peach last year and I found that I loved it as well. I don't know if they have that in audio, but it was a good story. (NT) -- Lil, 08:03:47 01/22/12 Sun
Something like 'Anne of Green Gables' maybe which is a children's literature, but lighthearted in tone and also really well written. It's broken up into chapters that are easily digestible. (NT) -- celtgirl, 16:14:14 01/22/12 Sun
I recommend the Betsy Tacy Series by Maud Hart Lovelace, takes place in the early 1900s. In the first 4 books the girls are young but still funny things happen.
