Chapter 40

-This chapter begins with these words:

'It was so long ago...It was in February, seven months ago, that he had last come to Modon. An interval long enough for a birth; or a stillbirth; or the birth of a freak.'

-From the Venetian Bailie, Nicholas learns that Trebizond has fallen to the Sultan. The Emperor and his family have been shipped to Constantinople. Maria, Alexios and Anna have been kept for either the Sultan's train or put into the harem.

-the alum in the Papal States has been discovered, and so there will be no more payments to keep it secret.

-Nicholas is summoned to see The Greek With the Wooden Leg. Nicholas makes it clear that he is very aware just how manipulated he has been by Venice.

-The Greek has a letter from Gregorio for Nicholas.

-They arrive in Venice, with Nicholas in a state of anticipation for his year long famine is about to end.

I love this bit:

"So you will have a welcome," said the Greek. "And this transformation? You are fond of her."

"Yes." Nicholas said. He found he was smiling. He said, "Do you suppose I do all this for myself? How dull that would be."

Chapter 41

-Nicholas has barely set foot in Venice when he is abducted and thrown into a boat, along with Catherine.

-His captor is none other than Simon.

-Simon wants compensation for his ship, his silver and the arms, plus the profits from the voyage.

-Nicholas accuses Simon of having stolen the ship in the first place, as well as the armour. Simon draws his sword.

-Nicholas manages to fend of the worst of the blows, and when he realizes that Simon would like to kill him, asks that Catherine be allowed to go to her mother.

-Simon's response is this:

"Your wife? Your wife is dead and buried."

Chapter 42

-Gregorio arrives with Astorre and his men, and realizes right away that Nicholas has been told of Marian's death.

-Marian took ill in Burgundy and died.

-Gregorio informs Nicholas that he has been left in charge of Catherine's share of the Charetty company. He has also been left everything outside of the business in Bruges.

-Catherine's marriage to Pagano Doria was illegal.

-Gregorio proposes to the men of the Charetty company that they form a bank of their own to be based in Venice, with Nicholas as owner and major share-holder.

-Nicholas is offered the gift of a house by the Collegio, an inducement to continue to work for Venice.

-The escort provided by the Collegio, takes him to a house which is not his own, but on which he recognizes the coat of arms. Violante of Naxos waits for him in her bedgown.

-She says to him: 'He said, tonight you need someone you despise.'

-They sleep together and in the morning Nicholas' rises to the sound of the many bells of Venice and says to no on in particular "Let all stand still, for the master of the house has come."

She heard him speak. But whether in irony or in agony, in defiance or submission she couldn't hear, for the din of the bells.'

Q1. What do you think Nicholas means by the statement above about a stillbirth or the birth of a freak?

Q2. Do you think Nicholas could see so far ahead, when keeping the secret of the alum, to know that it could one day be used to fund a crusade against the Turk?

Q3. Were you surprised that Nicholas slept with Violante?

It's been fun discussing this book, I love Nicholas so much, no matter what he's up to, he is never dull. :)
