Subject: I really couldn't blame Mary when she kept her garden a secret. There must be something in her background that makes her want to be successful or get ahead as she says. I am not saying it was right, but I think I understand where she was coming from. It is interesting that there is such little fertile soil and people put gardens out in the middle of nowhere. I am so lazy that I have trouble tending a garden out in my yard. It I had to drive or walk a distance to tend to it, it would all be over, there is no way I see myself doing that. That is dedication.
In reply to: Carla 's message, "As far as the garden goes, I thought perhaps Mary was keeping it secret as a way of staking out some space and profit of her own -- she shares a house built by her BIL, her work making fish is credited to Ned, nothing is really hers except for this plot of land. I suspect Mary has a very interesting back story that accounts for many of her actions and comments. On another related note, I tried to find pictures of the roadside vegetable plots that are very common on the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland. People have fenced off odd pieces of land seemingly in the middle of nowhere to grow their potatoes, carrots, cabbage & turnip where ever they find soil rich and deep enough to grow something." on 11:22:57 03/08/09 Sun
