I really couldn't blame Mary when she kept her garden a secret. There must be something in her background that makes her want to be successful or get ahead as she says. I am not saying it was right, but I think I understand where she was coming from. It is interesting that there is such little fertile soil and people put gardens out in the middle of nowhere. I am so lazy that I have trouble tending a garden out in my yard. It I had to drive or walk a distance to tend to it, it would all be over, there is no way I see myself doing that. On another related note, I tried to find pictures of the roadside vegetable plots that are very common on the Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland. They would have been started generations ago when people had no choice, they needed to grow extra root vegetables to supplement what they could buy from the merchant.
