Subject: Maybe this is similar to that quote Cindy posted last week...you have to believe it to see it. Maybe this new information influenced how they saw their world. Suddenly they see the miracle of things as well as the working of the devil in their lives. It might be imagination in some part, coincidence or something bigger. I think they find comfort in the religious aspect because it has some hope related to it that might not be a regular occurrence in their daily grind.
In reply to: Denise 's message, "I would have had a problem listening to the 'fire and brimstone' of the Reverand. DH used to watch the evangelists on Sunday morning, not for the religious aspect, but he was amused by their 'sales' technique. I had to leave the room because it made me very uncomfortable for some, strange reason. I suppose if I was living on the Cape and my life was as routine as theirs was, the Reverand would have been a novelty, if nothing else. Are the strange sightings after being 'saved' part of that cult experience where your imagination is going wild? I'm interested to see if this storyline will go anywhere." on 07:34:28 03/10/09 Tue

  • From a historical viewpoint, almost everyone in medival Europe was religious. They were expected to be and the priests were extremelly powerful. From what I have read the serfs' lives were awful and religion gave them comfort (or guilt) that they would have a heavenly eternal life after they died. While they had nothing while they were living but hard work and drudgery, religion gave them something to look forward to. I see some similarities to those times and the people of the cape. Their lives are very difficult and they work very hard, so maybe becoming saved made them feel like they had some hope for a better life. I thought it was interesting that Lavinia sort of had to be coerced into becoming saved. (NT) -- Rebecca, 12:24:14 03/10/09 Tue
