2 news items re China and Chinese from yesterday's Wall Street Journal:

(1) "U.S. to Press China on Drywall; Top Consumer Safety Official Will Ask Beijing to Help Pay for Damage to Homes.
Washington---The new chairman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission said she would ask China to help pay for the billions of dollars in damage to U.S. homes blamed on Chinese-made drywall.....The CPSC has received about 1,500 reports from residents in 27 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico who blame health problems and property damage on Chinese drywall in their homes. State and local authorities have received similar reports that include homeowner complaints about respiratory problems, bloody noses and recurrent headaches. The Chinese drywall is under investigation for emitting sulfide fumes suspected of causing the homeowner complaints."

2) "Ex-Ford Worker Indicted in Secrets Theft.
A former product engineer at Ford Motor Co. stole more than 4,000 pages of documents containing trade secrets and tried to use the confidential papers to help secure a new job with at least one Chinese company, according to a federal indictment unsealed Thursday. Xiang Dong Yu,47, of Beijing, was charged with a 5-count indictment with theft of trade secrets, attempted theft of trade secrets and unauthorized access to a protected computer. Mr. Yu, also known as Mike Yu, was arrested at Chicago O'Hare International Airport after disembarking from a flight from China. According to the indictment, Mr. Yu, a Chinese national, worked fro Ford from 1997 to 2007 and had access to Ford trade secrets, including the company's design documents. In December 2006, Mr. Yu accepted a job at the China branch of Foxconn, PCE Industry Inc. The Indictment alleges that on the eve of his departure from Ford in January 2007 and before he told Ford of his new job, Mr. Yu copied some 4,000 ford documents onto an external hard drive, including sensitive Ford design documents."
