• I think the combination of DK and PinF are so powerful and intense that a break is warrented (unless you're on a roll, like Lady Tait!). I loved this book. The setting is so rich and exotic that I really had a sense of place with this one more than the others. DK is still my favorite so far though, for shear jaw-dropping revelations.         • I start back to work in 3 weeks, I work for the local school board, and I told myself I wanted to finish the series before "Trinity", hence the speed.   • Yes, I've been reading like crazy, but Lady Tait caught up and passed me!! I'm busy falling in love with Jerott actually and being surprised quite often as usual. I'm loving it and am in awe at her ability to weave the plot lines so deftly and do so much in such really average sized books. It's like watching an Indiana Jones movie where more happens before the title than most entire movies! I'm having lots of trouble with my Dad and his galloping dementia and my sister and I decided over the weekend to place my parents in the nursing home that is about 3 blocks from my house. Will do that next week. He's getting up multiple times at night and is especially confused in the evenings. He already thinks he's in some kind of nursing home, so it's time. This morning I spent quite some time trying to patch my copy of PiF together. It's a used book, though most I buy are in relatively good condition, but the binding is not holding in this one (Eagle Publications) and pages and huge chunks of pages are falling out.       • I do agree with you mostly. I think DD is more "literary" and her stories are tighter and consistent from start to finish. And yet, I love Jamie more than Lymond. I feel a bit more distance with Lymond. I don't know the color of his eyelashes or what he's thinking and feeling. He's intriquing and exciting in a way that's different from Jamie, but he's not as real to me. This is my first read of the Lymond Chronicles and I will definitely read them again... and again...over time and perhaps my opinion may change. They are quite different series, but both excellent. I just feel like J&C are part of my family and I don't with the Lymond crew. I do think that DD packs more suspense, intrique, and plot twists, shocks, and excitement into her books than DG. • To me the two series are sort of apples and oranges- the intent of the authors is different and of course so are the stories. It's no secret that the Lymond Chronicles are my favourite series however I realize that they aren't accessible for all readers- I don't mean physically accessible, but as a reader. The prose is fairly knotty at times and so not everyone will like these books. I tend to not compare authors anyway, I like so many for different reasons. I think Dennis Lehane is one of the best writers I've ever come across and yet because he writes mysteries and thrillers many people miss out on him. I think every writer adds something to the tapestry of my reading experience. That's not to say I don't prefer some books over others, but rather I guess that I'm glad I get to read them all. • This a message regarding QP and DK which I am now reading. Does anyone else have a hard time getting into the book at first because of all the new and foreign names (often multiple names for the same person) and getting everything and everyone straight detracts from the enjoyment of the story for a while?   • Calling the characters by several different names and titles is confusing and makes these harder to read than the usual novel. I'm glad for the list at the beginning of each book. I usually just keep reading and something will eventually click about who this is, but at times I have to look back a bit to see who's talking. Seems like this is something an editor would help a first time novelist correct, although I think it is something the reader kind of gets used to. I find her very good with action scenes. No matter how much is going on, I find I can see it playing out in my mind. I was especially impressed with that swordfight scene in GofK's. (NT) -- FranS, 19:41:09 07/20/06 Thu
    • I think this is one place that taking Russian literature in college helps me out, I got so used to each and every character having multiple names and having to keep the strands straight with all these big, unwieldy Russian books that it works in my favour now with other books too. I agree with Fran though in that I'm surprised that they didn't try to make that first book a little less dense and hard to read, simply because I've always wondered how many people that turned off ever reading past about one quarter of the way into 'Game of Kings'.
