No sean malos perdedores. Si hubiera ganado Australia no hubieran dicho nada.

The beauty of democracy and freedom of expression, is that we can all have different views and opionions on a same subject, even in the same vehicle (in this case, Global Beauties). Here is my take on Miss U 2009…
I was in China covering the Miss Tourism Queen International pageant when it all happened. Miss Universe is not telecast there, You Tube is censured, so I did not see or learn anything about this year’s pageant besides the results, until I returned home a few days ago.
Going back a few months, I remember when I saw Stefanía for the first time. She had won one of those preliminary prizes for Miss Venezuela (most beautiful face, perhaps), and when I saw the photo of Miss Trujillo, I immediately told a friend: “Can a woman be that stunning There she is, Miss Venezuela, and Miss Universe 2010″. His response was: “You are crazy, there’s no back-to-back victories in Miss Universe”. And I thought: “Not yet, but if this woman wins in Venezuela, Miss Universe will have no alternative other than crowning her”.
The rest in history.
I recently watched the Miss Universe pageant and, honestly, looking at the top 15, she was the clear standout. Even the stunners from Australia and Iceland, two personal favorites of mine, did not look their best that night.
The new Miss Universe is absolutely impressive. She would look incredible in the 1950’s, in the 1980’s, and she does it today. Stefanía is one of those rare beauties who are noticeble even from a mile of distance. Her unique elegance and charm are unquestionable.
So what if her scores were not the highest in swimsuit and evening gown? Does anyone remember Deborah Carthy-Deu in 1985 or Dayanara Torres in 1993? The same is valid for Michelle McLean in 1992, and Brooke Lee in 1997. Or yet, Margareth Gardiner, in 1978, and so many others. who don’t come to my mind at the moment.
What matters is that when the judges went to vote, instead of giving scores, they scored placements, and the majority of them picked Venezuela, and she won, with all merits, fair and square.
Another recent controversy is the fact that the MUO picks 6 out of the 15 semi-finalists. Is that new for anyone in the pageant world? They’ve been announcing it for years. Perhaps pageants are so irrelevant in the “real world”, that the media took 5 or 6 years to notice it, that’s all.
The only thing I personally question is: if the organization created this criteria to “make justice”, how can it ignore entire continents, such as Asia this year? Misses China, India, Indonesia, Philippines and Japan were all great and just as deserving (or more deserving) than some of the Europeans who crowded the top 15 and top 10 and then quickly vanished, except for Kosovo, a nation still not recognized as an independent country by most countries in the world, but strongly supported by the United States, which was the only remaining one to have reached the top 5, ending as 2nd Runner Up.
All in all, the pageant was fine, but nothing more than what we’ve been seeing for several years. There was nothing new and the production was poor when compared to the last editions of the pageant. However, the winner is great, possibly one of the best ever. At least in my eyes. Everyone has their own set of eyes when it comes to beauty and they are entitled to them. As they say, Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder.

MUO President Paula Shugart wants the whole universe to know...
... that the results of the 2009 pageant were not rigged!
by Rafa Delfin
An online petition is going around the world protesting the official results of this year's Miss Universe pageant. Many pageant fans are not happy that Venezuela won the crown two years in a row, and that the winner, Stefania Fernandez, should have been the fourth runner-up. Many object to MUO owner Donald Trump's practice of picking six of the nine semifinalists. And some are outraged by the notion that Shugart influences the judges. Shugart is fed up and hurt by these accusations, and she chats with Critical Beauty to set the record straight.
Earlier last week, I contacted the Miss Universe Organization to request a phone interview with President Shugart. MUO Executive Coordinator Lauren Paradise called my cellphone on Wednesday (Sept. 2) at 6:44 P.M. saying that I could still catch President Shugart in her office where she would remain until 7 P.M. I said to myself that I would need more than 15 minutes to talk with her, so I didn't call the office and waited the next day to reschedule. Meanwhile, I took my dog Bosco out for a walk. At 7:04 P.M., President Shugart called my cellphone and said that she was available to talk to me; however, I replied that I couldn't at the moment because I was walking the dog. I asked her to wait twenty minutes and that I would call her back. She said fine, since she had some more stuff to do at the office.
After walking the dog, I immediately rushed to my desk and set up my tape recorder and my speaker phone. I called back President Shugart at around 7:33 P.M. and she said hello. Our chat lasted about 40 minutes. Below is the transcript of our conversation. (Note: PMS is President Shugart's initials! Honestly! LOL)
RAFA: You know pageant fans, they're crazy! It's part of the whole thing... the ritual. Miss Universe is the most popular and the biggest pageant in the world, and during Miss Universe fever, everybody gets excited!
PMS: The night of the pageant, I turned to somebody and said that I don't get vested in who's going to win because A- I'm usually wrong, and B - because I've learned a long time ago that it's somebody's fate. I've never understood how Tara Conner won. I couldn't believe it. And then six months later I realized that it was her fate to win Miss USA. That was what had to happen in her life.
RAFA: So in other words, you did not approach the judges? You did not have any influence on them whatsoever?
PMS: No, I did not have any influence on the judges. Though I will tell you what happened. A judge asked me something that did not have anything to do with the pageant; it was more like something to do with the pattern, you know, the technical stuff early in the evening. Then later in the night, after the final look voting, one of the judges had voted on his paper ballot, but he got up and had to run to the bathroom. He wasn't at his desk and somebody pointed it out to me and I ran over to make sure everything was okay, so I definitely approached the judges. And this particular judge was being escorted out. And so at that point...
RAFA: Was it André Leon Talley? (photo)
PMS: No, it was not André. But yes, definitely, I looked irritated especially when someone tells you that one of your judges is not seated! That was quite a bit of a freaky moment! (laughs)
RAFA: I guess you will never invite this judge again!
PMS: Well, he said that he really had to use the bathroom and said, "I'm done. May I go?" without even asking me or anything, but it sounded pretty urgent, so...
RAFA: So why did they switch to paper instead of the electronic voting?
PMS: They use electronic, but if they take notes - I mean they don't have to use paper but they have their notes there. So this talent (judge) was led out and quickly went to the bathroom but a guard would not let this talent back in: "No, no, we're about to be back on the air. We can't let anyone in." Eventually, he did get in and he was able to vote. But it was just one of those crazy moments. It was absolutely crazy for our computer guys, it was crazy for Ernst & Young, but everything was definitely verified to the extent that they wanted me to double check, that everyone had put in their numbers. The computer was so far away - that's when I ran over, but everything was already done. Everything was already locked in. Then I went down to André's side and just said, "Is everything okay? " And André said, "Yeah, everything's fine. Why is everybody running around?" And he was asking me what was going on. And I said that I just wanted to make sure that everyone's okay, so I went down the line as the accountant was walking down the stage. Obviously, the judges were wondering, "What's all the chaos?"
RAFA: Why wasn't André included in the group picture?
PMS: André doesn't like to pose for photos. He said he only does candid photos.
RAFA: Oh, please! Whatever!
PMS: He was wonderful. He said he great experience with us. We got a great e-mail from him. He said that a lot of the contestants are fashion-forward and it was great group. He judged in 2000 as well.
RAFA: Well, you know, Donald Trump gets to select five or six?
PMS: Just to be clear... it's the Miss Universe group that gets to work with the contestants for three weeks. Trump meets the contestants and he takes it extremely seriously... and we do go to a room, there are people in the room and we do screen the contestants during the preliminaries. We talk about it. It's not like Donald comes in and says, "I'm picking these six." He definitely gives his opinion having watched rehearsals.
RAFA: So he never mentioned that the winner should be Australia or Puerto Rico.
PMS: Oh, gosh. No! But I will tell you that the person he thought was going to win was not even in the top 5. He'll tell me, "That girl did really well." And I would say, "I thought so, too." But the judges may disagree. And the reason I really wanted to do this interview is to get the record straight. I, I, did not... I mean, I have gotten to know Stefania the last few days and I think she is absolutely gorgeous, more of a natural beauty when the red lipstick is off and everything. She's a beautiful girl, and more importantly she has a great heart and I know she's going to be a great Miss Universe. Even in my own head, I think I was probably guilty of thinking, 'Too bad! Venezuela won't win two years in a row." But then I went "WOW" when it happened!
RAFA: There's always a first time in history so this is the first time that the same country won back-to-back.
PMS: Right. And I didn't even think that it would be possible. What bothers me is what people are saying on the message boards. Every year, people are going to be disappointed and I tell the contestants that only one of you will truly be happy when you leave here, and you have to make the most of your experience. People, when they can be anonymous, can be so catty and so nasty. I mean, for a full year, Jennifer Hawkins was ripped to shreds on the message boards and a lot of people were saying that they couldn't believe that she won. She was so shy, yet she has become such a good Miss Universe. But she saw the message boards and people said stuff about her all the time. People said horrendous things about her. Now, on the message boards, people are saying that she's the best Miss Universe ever , that she was the greatest. Oh, come on! You people were trashing her right and left! (laughs)
RAFA: That was the same thing with Riyo Mori when she won. Even with Zuleyka Rivera.
PMS: The funny thing about Zuleyka is that, when Puerto Rico won it was such a close vote. And you have to understand that this year it was a pretty even split with the judges; it's not like everybody said, "Oh, yes. Everyone's voting for Venezuela." That's why we have a different panel of judges because we want to get different viewpoints. In 2006, it was a close vote between Zuly and Kurara. and there were people saying that Kurara had been robbed. I didn't get a demand for a recount or anything. Every year, there will always be people who will never be happy.
RAFA: Many Asian fans are irate because no Asian delegate made the top fifteen this year. Care to explain?
PMS: You know what? The year that Riyo won, and Honey Lee made the finals, I got accused of favoring Asians. It just so happens that this year, we had more European contestants.
RAFA: There were nine!
PMS: Yeah, it was really amazing! I was blown away by them because they really stepped it up.
RAFA: Okay, so the preliminary judges were not hinted that Donald Trump was looking for Europeans this year?
PMS: Oh, no, not at all! Donald is absolutely thrilled with Stefania and he is the first to say that the Latinas are the strong competitors. And he'll be the first to say that there's a reason why.
RAFA: What about Miss Japan not entering? Are you sad? I know Ines Ligron is very disappointed.
PMS: I think this year was the most competitive year I've ever seen. There were so many incredibly beautiful and outstanding women with the whole package. And it's really important to find someone who can handle the job for a whole year.
RAFA: So what's the story with Miss Turks & Caicos, Jewel Selver? The real scoop, please!
PMS: (laughs) I don't even have the real scoop! All I know is that Jewel left the night... I was actually coming back from work one night when I saw an ambulance go by and she was taken to the hospital that night. And I hadn't heard anything else, so unfortunately I don't have any scoop for you. Jewel was a real trooper. She hadn't been feeling well during the last couple of days.
RAFA: That's too bad that she left a day before the finals.
PMS: Well, you always hate to see that.
RAFA: I have a couple of questions from fans. Remember a few years ago, you had that "Be A Judge" contest where you had to pick from a roster of fans who registered? But this time, you should pick from the bloggers and pageant site webmasters because that would really excite the entire online pageant community and boost their support for the pageant even more.
PMS: Actually, NBC and I are talking about different things right now, and my biggest focus this year is to stream the preliminary competition online, which was a huge success because it piqued NBC's interest quite a bit. But we will certainly consider other things that we can do.
RAFA: Uhhh... Miss Thailand is Miss Photogenic. Was that rigged? (laughs) Come on! You know full well that Filipino fans are crazy about their girl!
PMS: Haha, I know! I actually said that this year's Miss Photogenic would either be Philippines or Puerto Rico. William (Prendiz de Jurado) sent me an email beforehand and he said, "if Miss Philippines win, I am quitting pageants!" (laughs) (photo of Miss Thailand Chutima Durongdej)
RAFA: I think I asked you before. Why can't you have two special awards? One, Miss Internet - to be selected by online users, and the other, Miss Photogenic - to be selected by professional photographers.
PMS: I actually brought that up with NBC. NBC loves the traffic to their site "Vote for Miss Photogenic" and last year I suggested why don't we go for national costumes because so many people put so much time and effort into it and that was really a big success for them, and then this year they asked if we could do Miss Photogenic again. It would be great if the winner is selected by professional photographers, and perhaps the winner could get a modeling contract - something that might be really nice. I don't want to take anything from Miss Thailand, but it would help to have industry professionals selecting the winner.
RAFA: So tell me, do you like Michelle Malcolm's reports? (laughs)
PMS: Yeah! I think, overall, everything seems really good!
RAFA: So do you know where the pageant is going to be held next year?
PMS: I have some ideas but I'm not gonna tell you! (laughs)
RAFA: Oh, come on! Name a few countries!
PMS: Well, you know what? I'm about to leave for a bunch of trips, so I will keep you posted.
RAFA: We have to do lunch! (laughs)
PMS: There you go! You can come down and do your vegetarian lunch in New York!
RAFA: It's my treat! We'll bring Esther and Roston! (laughs)
PMS: Yeah, that would be perfect!
RAFA: Oh, uhhh... last thing. Carrie Prejean. What's up with her? Any comments?
PMS: You know what? Maybe someday I'll be able to comment, but not now.
RAFA: If you don't want to comment, let me comment then! Hahaha. She has become the most hated personality in the pageant industry. It's unbelievable!
PMS: Well, there are probably things on both sides... uhhhh.... someday... someday... we'll be able to talk.
RAFA: Are you going to Venezuela for the Miss Venezuela 2010 pageant?
PMS: Unfortunately, I can't. I'm being honored by my alma mater, Ohio University, during that week. I just found out that I'm going to be in a parade! (laughs)
RAFA: Oh my god, you're gonna be in a float! (laughs)
PMS: I said, "Oh, no! I don't parades!" Maybe I can get Kristen (Dalton) to be my stunt waver. (laughs) Actually, Allie Laforce goes to school there, so I'm excited to see her. Maybe we can get Allie to sit in the car for me.
RAFA: Do you still live in California or did you move to New York?
PMS: I'm pretty much a New Yorker now. I still have my home in California, which is kinda close to the fires, so we're gonna go there this weekend to check if everything is fine. We've been doing some remodeling for a couple of years - by long distance. When I was in Vietnam, I was checking online, "Oh, those windows look great!" So we're gonna see what we threw together all around the world. The only reason I really want to get across and why it is so important for me to talk to you is that - I don't want in any way to taint Stefania's reign. She's such a sweetheart and such a nice girl, so eager to take English classes every day for two and a half hours. What I love about her is that she just wants to grow. You can tell - she's just a great person. I don't want in any way for people to say things and for people to be mean and to make her feel bad about herself. I've seen the results, I've verified the results and she was the winner.
RAFA: By the way, whatever happened to "Pageant Place?"
PMS: Oh gosh! I don't know if I can handle "Pageant Place!" (laughs) I would really like to follow Miss Universe in an arena. We have a new website this year... I don't know if you got the chance to see the videos...
RAFA: I was actually watching the video "84 Countries - One Crown." That was cool.
PMS: I am really excited about a lot of that because we have a new creative outlet. We had a quarter of a million people who viewed the prelim show, and that's not even counting the group that couldn't see it live, like the people in India who saw it later. So we're starting to get a real following of some of our videos and we 're able to start documenting the adventures of Miss Universe and Miss USA during their reign. That would be really nice. With "Pageant Place," sometimes on that show they want more drama. There are things with Riyo that were cut out, like her trip to Indonesia...
RAFA: Well, she didn't really talk too much. It was basically all about Rachel (Smith).
PMS: Well, Rachel, because they wanted to create drama between Rachel and Tara. Riyo's trip to Indonesia was great... there was some drama. There was some rioting (laughs)... but at that point Rachel was having some fight with her boyfriend so MTV wanted to put the fight with the boyfriend instead of Riyo. There are definitely other outlets that we're developing right now, and what the best thing is for the brand. (photo of Riyo Mori)
RAFA: Are you happy with the Bahamians?
PMS : Oh my gosh! It was such a pleasure! I know I must have said it a million times in the press. I know the Vice-President of Production was happy, she was all smiling. It was just easy. It was so easy on so many levels that they did such a great job. It was blessed. Even the parade we were in Nassau (my first parade!), clouds had formed and we thought it was going to rain, but then they started disappearing and I just knew that it was one of those things - everything just went so well. I mean everything was great. Did you like any of the contestants?
RAFA: Yeah, actually it's funny you mentioned that because Critical Beauty is the only pageant site that did not include any Asians in the Top 15.
PMS: Really?
RAFA: Yeah! It was like, "Is this prophetic or what?" I'm getting better every year! (laughs)
PMS: You are! One of the things that I said to Mr. Trump during the show is that there were too many beautiful women! It was amazing!
RAFA: And they were all wearing bikinis, even Miss Indonesia. I was surprised. Even Miss Egypt.
PMS: It was very interesting. Miss Egypt was so sweet. We were excited about the show. I thought Kelly Rowland was wonderful. I know that no one is going to be 100% happy. Oh! One thing that you did ask... the reason why we stopped doing individual scores is because the judges felt pressured and that they had to answer to their home country.
RAFA: And they probably get a lot of hate mail, too!
PMS: Yes. There are people who literally said, "I can't do this." The thing is, you have to give them freedom to vote, how they really feel. We eliminated the individual scores completely because we thought it gives an element of mystery. You know, we never see it out in the house, I'm always waiting who's going to move ahead. So that was one of the things we have for the telecast audience - that they might prefer not to know and then just be surprised. In all fairness, the judges prefer not to have their scores up.
RAFA: That's understandable.
PMS: Yeah, even André Leon Talley - when he judged in 2000 the scores were up there. When we told him it was just composite scores, he said, "Oh, I feel much better."
RAFA: Oh, come on! He gave a 7.00 to Claudia Moreno, Miss Venezuela, during the swimsuit round. A 7.00! Oh my god... Claudia was a goddess! (laughs) ... like, what's up with that?!!!
PMS: (laughs) Boy, you remember! Cyprus was memorable... I was running around in Cyprus during the show... Is there anything else you want to ask me?
RAFA: Yes, but I can't think of it right now. But if I remember, I'll scribble it down and e-mail it to you. I thank you so much for this chat. I know you're a very busy person and I can't thank you enough. And I know that it's hard for you, and I want you to know that we appreciate all the hard work that you do. You and your staff are doing an incredibly excellent job. Keep up the good work!
PMS: Why thank you!!!
RAFA: Any message for our Critical Beauty readers? We're celebrating 5 years in October!
PMS: Is it 5 years?
RAFA: Yeah!
PMS: Well, when did you start the Miss Universe Critic?
RAFA: Back in May 1998, and then I switched to Critical Beauty in October 2004.
PMS: So when did I first interview with you?
RAFA: 2002.
PMS: No, it was 2003, because it was a week before we fired Oxana.
RAFA: 2002! I went to your office in October 2002, remember? Oxana was still the reigning Miss Universe.
PMS: Right! And then you said at the end of my interview, "Is there anything else...?" and I said, "Why? What have you heard?" Since I knew at that point that we were having problems. And I kept asking myself, "Has he heard anything else?" (laughs)
(Read my 2002 interview with PMS)
RAFA: (laughs) Well, I do have a lot of sources, you know! And one of them is my good friend Hector Joaquin from Puerto Rico!
PMS: Did Hector start that online petition? (laughs)
RAFA: Hahaha, no! But we both suspected that it was a Puerto Rican who started it.
PMS: Yes, that's what I heard. I have never seen the petition, but I was contacted by Telemundo who asked me about it. All I can say is that, you know, everyone should be proud of their contestant, and the fact that somebody is in the top 5 is amazing. Miss Australia was on the cover of the Sunday Times the week before the pageant and they dubbed her as the frontrunner.
RAFA: Well, I fell in love with Kosovo. The moment she walked on that stage... this woman is gorgeous!
PMS: Kosovo is just so... so sweet! And she looks like Audrey Hepburn.
RAFA: Yeah, Audrey Hepburn reincarnated!
PMS: Some of the judges thought she was not the one, other judges thought Venezuela was the one, other judges thought DR (Dominican Republic) was the one, and the others thought Australia... it was all over the place!
RAFA: It's funny because when Zuleyka Rivera won in 2006, I had a hard time warming up to her because my favorite was Kurara, Miss Japan. But a few weeks later, I learned to warm up to Zuleyka and I think eventually everyone will also warm up to Stefania. Even if Stefania's English is horrible, her personality is infectious.
PMS: Well, I'm really excited for her and the fact that she's eager to learn English, and by the end of her reign she's going to be so fluent. (photo of Zuleyka Rivera)
RAFA: Yeah, like she's going to appear on The Howard Stern Show! (laughs)
PMS: Well, we made Dayana do that show. She's a spitfire and she can handle it.
RAFA: Dayana's English improved tremendously!
PMS: Absolutely. I'm excited. You know, I learn something new every year. The year Kurara was first runner-up, I thought Kurara was going to be the winner that year. I love everybody. And then Zuly ended up rising to the occasion. But it's true... you get so vested in the event. We had so many people down there from NBC this year, and they had never seen the pageant before, and they thought it was amazing! They all were so vested in one contestant or another, and it was funny because they were all arguing with each other. One of the NBC people really loved Kosovo, another one really loved Dominican Republic, and they were all insisting they had the winner. And it was great because they had never experienced that before. And we're talking about people who are lawyers, vice-presidents... they're not all pageant freaks. (laughs)
RAFA: Well, I'm gonna let you go because I know you're tired.
PMS: Thank you. And thank you for your kind words because sometimes it gets a little frustrating, and when you try and you just want to be able to deliver something no matter what, you end up making people angry. So thank you for recognizing our hard work.
RAFA: You're welcome! So I'll go to New York and we'll have lunch or dinner together. It's my treat!
PMS: Great! Do you love Indian food?
RAFA: Oh, I love Indian food! Oh my god, the spicier the better! There's a good vegan place called Angelica Kitchen somewhere in East Village. It's pure vegan and totally organic. It's wonderful! Madonna would love to eat there! Try that one, too! I have their cookbook, because I love to cook! (laughs)
PMS: Ahhhh! Perfect! I will check it out. Well, uh, I will talk with you soon and if there's anything else, go ahead and send me an e-mail.
RAFA: Have a nice vacation, wherever you're going.
PMS: Thank you! And you have a good weekend! By the way, what kind of dog do you have?
RAFA: We adopted him from a shelter. He's a mutt. He has the markings of a Doberman Pinscher but he has floppy ears and a long tail. Why? Do you have dogs?
PMS: Not now, but I want to have one, but my husband said, "Absolutely not!"
RAFA: Get a cat!
PMS: Well, I have two cats. And my husband said he would never notice that they're missing. When I'm gone, he says, "Why is it that you're gone all the time and I'm taking care of the cats?" (laughs)
RAFA: Well, get a little lap dog like Paris Hilton!
PMS: Oh, yeah, perfect! No, but we might, but I just uh... I really like dogs a lot. I thought about it while you were walking your dog. And what's your dog's name?
RAFA: His name is Bosco.
PMS: Bosco? The drink? Like the chocolate syrup?
RAFA: You got it! He's so sweet. I'll send you his picture. (laughs)
PMS: (laughs) Well, have a great weekend and if anything else comes up, send me an e-mail.
RAFA: Thank you, thank you! Take care. Bye-bye!
PMS: Bye!
End of interview.

Entonces. ¿POR QUÉ DECIR QUE COMPRARON LA CORONA… ? AHORA ?? ¿POR QUÉ NO LA COMPRARON HACE 7 AÑOS, O HACE 10 O HACE 4?
¿AHORA QUE VENEZUELA ESTA EN SU PEOR CRISI ECONOMICA Y HAY CONTROL CAMBIARIO Y NO HAY DOLARES, LA COMPRAMOS?¿AHORA ES QUE NOS LAS VENDEN?....
¿POR QUÉ NO LA COMPRO PUERTO RICO o MEXICO o AUSTRALIA……? ¿ CUÁNTO CUESTA LA CORONA DE MISS UNIVERSO…….? ¿300 MIL DOLARES ?, ¿1 MILLON ? … ¿EN QUE CABEZA CABE QUE VENEZUELA PAGARIA POR UNA CORONA QUE NADIE, NADIE, NI LA MISMA OMV CREIA QUE IBA A GANAR POR LO IMPOSIBLE DEL BACK TO BACK…?
¿QUÉ GANA LA ORG MISS VENEZUELA CON ESTE BACK TO BACK, SI DURANTE 12 AÑOS EL MISS VENEZUELA HA SEGUIDO SIENDO ADORADO EN NUESTRO PAIS Y EN EL MUNDO ENTERO.?
ESTO SE LOS DIGO A TODOS: EN DOCE AÑOS NO HEMOS GANADO NI UN MISS UNIVERSO, NI UN MISS MUNDO, HEMOS ESTADO FUERA DE COMPETENCIA DOS VECES, Y SIN EMBARGO NO NOS HA HECHO FALTA PARA SEGUIR SIENDO EL CONCURSO DE MAS FAMA ¡!! A NIVEL MUNDIAL…

REQUIEM - Miss Universe in Hell….
by Pasquale “Patrick” Tripoldi
Miss Venezuela WON????? Well, shut my mouth and call me Myrtle! How did that happen? It’s been a week and now that everyone has gotten their say in, let me say mine. The conspiracy theories abound….and many of those are almost comical if they didn’t feel so…..real! Was I the only one who didn’t see the card in Billy Bush’s hand replaced?
Amusing as all this bickering and complaining by everyone but the Venezuelans is … it was personally astounding how a woman who was less attractive than Jictzad and Ana Karina made it into the Top 15. I also don’t believe Venezuela has any business being in the Top 10, her SS was not great. Her body is, just, well, nothing special. I especially could not believe she made it into the Top 5 wearing the furry Tomato Ketchup bottle dress AGAIN over the likes of France, Czech Republic and even South Africa in that wrinkled mess. However, once in the Top 5, regarding the questions, at first I thought to myself “she nailed it.” My theory has always been “It is HOW one answers the question, NEVER the content, particularly with the Venezuelans (Dayana, Alicia).” But then I go back to 2007 when Riyo did not deliver well nor had the best answer (Ly Joinaitis had the best answer and Natalie Guimares delivered the best), and 2006 with Kurana delivering much better than Zuly, but Zuly having a slighly better answer, and I thought to myself that that idea was just plain old bullshit. She said women are equal to men? Where? Iceland, maybe. Finland, Sweden, perhaps. But not the United States. Certainly not Venezuala. Just in her bubble brain. What a dumb ass answer. Ok, it’s a fix.
Don’t get me wrong…I wish Stefania much luck (the Oxana kinda luck, but luck nonetheless LOL), along with the Miss Universe Organization (cough, cough, hack). But I am thinking that Global Beauties may pass on the Miss USA and Miss Universe next year by not sending anyone to the pageant. We get treated like crap whenever we go. Esther Swan, since 2005 always gives whichever of us shows up the fish eyed insane look like we just killed her puppy, and there is NO access to the contestants since 2006. Why waste our money on VIP tickets and staying at “their select hotels”. I still recall the living hell that was the Wilshire “Not So” Grand Hotel in Los Angeles in 2006. 6 heat wave days of over 102 and the air conditioning was not working properly. The hotel was a tad frayed and so was the treatment by the MUO staff. The last time they treated us well was 2004. Since they don’t seem to need us, why spend money to basically promote them and help support their sponsors. To HELL with that … to hell with Miss Universe. The concept, the organization, the pageant, and especially that totally embarassing website. It is SHAMeful they could not afford someone to monitor it and they allowed such racist, nationalistic hatred to flourish there. SHAMe on them! So HELL it is… Let it rest there, in the Fifth (Avarice) and Sixth Circles of Hell (Heresy) in the City of “DIS”! Cuz we (the fans) have been DISsed!
Despite better ratings for the last hour of the show this year (from last years dismal showing) I believe they are still dying, nay they are dead and, after this year’s fiasco, deservedly so. Its sickness started showing symptoms during the end of the reign of Alicia Machado, went into remission from 1998 to 2001 and the patient was declared DOA in 2003, but the obituary was premature as the patient bounced back to a semblance of health by the end of ‘03 right through July 2006 when it suddenly took a turn for the worse. Hospice Care has been given ever since and despite a last gasp at breath, the patient died, August 23rd 2009. R.I.P..
All pageants, in general are dying, despite new ones popping up all over and the fact that Miss World and Miss Earth are slightly gaining in worldwide popularity due to their movement into new markets. Personally, this year and next, I am throwing my time, energy, and most importantly my money towards other endeavors, like Miss Earth and Miss World, and keeping my eye on Miss TQI which has one of the best production values of all of the Grand Slams. This is not because Venezuela is the new Miss Universe. That is a embarassment for the MUO to live with. Because, um, like, women are equal to men, like in the, Iraq and um, like all over the South Africa and umm, Mi amor Hugo Chavez in the country where they live, umm, like the Iraq and stuff, equality! DOH!
Mainly, I resign it to hell because the Top 15 was a SHAM. A sad patethic SHAM! A SHAMeful SHAM! The token black girl was Miss France and she is Chelsi Smith/Rachel Smith bi-racial. South Africa is primarily of Indian origin with a bit o’ white mixed in. Honestly, 11 of the 84 girls were East Asian and 2 more were half -East Asian (18%). None made it! This was the highest level of talent from East Asia in a very long time. Please don’t mention 2007, Japan and Korea were great. The rest of the East Asians basically were for nada. Ditto for 2008. Japan was one of the worst to ever make semifinals (I thought she was a boy!) and it has been said that Vietnam’s placement was written into the contract.
nstead of continuing to bitch and moan (although I can, believe me), I decided to just list the “Other 15,” that is, the 15 girls who could easily have replaced many (at least 1/2) of the women who did make it and many of them probably should have. Was it internal franchise politics aka sash, was it really preparation, because I sure didn’t see it, was it a way to get Osmel to keep his word and get him to finally retire? Who knows.
Oh, by the way, how did Miss USA ever get one of my dressing gowns for her Top 10 Evening Gown presentation???
I wore that little ditty on the third season of Bewitched and I consider it an heirloom. Remember Kirsten, A witch’s revenge is a bitch of a curse! Surrender Carrie! Anyway, hang on tight, away we go:
1. Miss Netherlands – Avalon Chanel-Weyzig was a stunner. She was a diamond in the rough that needed no polishing. A woman who is so comfortable with her beauty that it actually came through in all her candid photos. Nary a bad photo was taken of this exotic Eurasian lovely. Due to a shoe “malfunction” (as in Venezuela’s luggage “malfunction”), she was forced to change gowns for her preliminary. I loved the new gown but perhaps the impact of the full silver Mumu with dolman sleeves would have been better. Or perhaps she did make an impact on the prelim judges and we will never know. The lack of voting transparency is what is killing this pageant and causing it the loss of fans. I call on the MUO, as a last ditch effort to stay alive and keep the few fans it has to release the Prelim Scores and the individual Final Judges Scores.
2. Miss Mexico - Karla Carrillo had the exotic looks, mysterious bright glowing eyes, the perfect golden complexion and a perfect body with ever so slightly shaped voluptuous curves. I know that after the 14th girl was called, many of the other latin girls were expecting Mexico to be called into the last spot (and others were expecting Philippines). Mouths dropped when Venezuela was called. After the year Mexico has had, let’s hope that Perla can perform a miracle at Miss World.
3. Miss Philippines - Pamela Bianca Manalo was a hit or miss before her arrival in Nassau. We kept hearing of this “transformation” expecting something out of Frankenstein’s Bride. When this incredible pearl of radiant delight stepped off the plane one balmy Bahamian night, it was obvious that the unusual but interesting caterpillar had actually become the magnificent butterfly. She was in our eyes, the best that Asia had to offer, a Filipina her people could be proud of. On Sunday night, once again, the curse stuck. She joins such luminaries as Lian Ramos, Gionna Cabrera, Karen Agustin and Zorayda Ruth Andam.
4. Miss Spain - when Estibaliz Perriera won Miss Espana, I must admit I was a little disappointed as I was rooting for her eventual first runner up. But the Estibaliz that arrived in Nassau was a difierent woman altogether. Confident and proud during the Preliminary Competition, she walk with the same style and grace typical of most Miss Espanas. This Iberian Princess was a delight to behold and most definatelty should have walked among the Top 15.
5. Miss Honduras - Belgica Suarez was, sin duda, the most delightful, sensuous and best suited candidate to come out of Honduras in memory. With her caramel colored skin, come hither looks, and a body to die for, leaving this Central American bombshell out of the semifinals is a crime of the catwalk. Petite but perfect is not good for the semifinals? In fact, she was NOT petite, just had a small frame. 5′8″ is not petite! Once again, C.A. gets the shaft! When will beauty pagents (particularly this one) realize that there are different standards and concepts of beauty for different women from different regions of the world, such as….
6. Miss China - Jingyao Wang was a gem of the east who we knew would easily pick up the Congeniality Award, funny and charming; this stunning and tall model type would have also made an elegant and competitive semifinalist. Intelligent and witty, this is no “Look Meeeee!” girl, but rather a contestant who should have been given a chance to shine on stage. Another Asian contestant wasted.
7. Miss Ethiopia – Melat Yante proved that Africa was rich with beauty this year; not the poor year everyone was complaining about. Black is beautiful and all of its shades were offered to us, from the honey gold hues of Ethiopia’s stunning representativ, across to the west, north and south of this giant continent. Melat was the best chance for Africa (aside from Tatum Keshwar of South Africa, who was mainly of Indian descent) to move foward into the coveted group of 15. Alas, that was preveted, another “almost” total blackout, with the exception of Miss France, who is bi-racial.
Miss Colombia - Michelle Rouillard was a love her or leave her gal. After her performance at the Preliminary Show, I LOVED HER! He sexy strut, playful winking and all around good humor with the judges made me think this girl was a shoe-in. Alas, either the judges or the MUO thought different. Her gown was ok, but the way she carried it, and herself, as 5 Star, She coulda been a contender…..what a loss.
9. Miss Guatemala - Lourdes Figueroa is an eye-catching, resplendant figure of womanly delight. All of the Central Americans were ignored and there is no reason for that, particurly for some very weak Europeans (names withheld - cough oatia cough cough bania cough! Oh, I must take something for that cough … maybe a VALIUM!) Lourdes rocked the Prelims, many people thinking she equaled or surpassed Belgica from Honduras, her main rival. Alas, both were locked out. Such total horse manure. So sad!
10. Miss Indonesia - Zivanna Siregar is one of those heavenly women with a pre-possesing smile who really knew the old Tyra Banks secret about smiling with her eyes. She gave a wonderful Swimsuit presentation (two piece, unusual for this mainly Muslim, albeit liberal nation) and a hesitant but competent Evening Gown Prelim. Although choice of gown is not supposed to matter (see Venezuela above; ibid. Belgium, Switzerland), this was probably her main problem. You could see on her face she did not like her EG. Despite this, she should have been one of the (minimum) three Asians in this years Top 15.
11. Miss Curacao - Angenie Simon. Speaking of incredible transformations on a very short timetable, I was intrigues with Angenie’s possibilites when it was announced that she would be the delegate from Curacao to the Miss Universe pageant. Undoubtedly beautiful, she unfortunately has a bit of a dragalicious vibe going on pre-arrival. Not masculine, just overly made-up. However, upon arrival in the Bahamas, all the disappeared and this creamy bronze skin appeared, her eyebrows were in their proper place and her make-up was toned down to the proper natural quality for this pageant. In other words, an exquisite force of nature appeared ready to compete with the rest. Top notch performances in Prelim SS and EG also helped her cause.
12. Miss Russia - Sofia Rudyeva. A controversial figure, no doubt. But a stunning face and, according to reports, extremely friendly with other contestants. It is my belief that she might have been kept out of the Top 15 due to her rather conservative, but well executed, Prelim EG performance and an unusually shy SS performance. That aside, this alluring siren really did have all the goods. She either miscalculated the execution of her performance or the damage of her noteriety.
13. Miss Hungary - Zsuzsa Budai would most likely have made it much further and even replaced Switzerland, had she not worn that horrible evening gown which reminded me of that Carole Burnett Show episode when they parodied Gone with The Wind and she made her gown out of curtains. Definately in contention for the Polonia Bas Award, I am sure the gown did her in, but surely she carried it with the confidence of a true goddess. Her exotic features, beautiful hair and “to die for” body should have made her a shoe-in for the Top 15. Her absence in inexplicable.
14. Miss Brazil - Larissa Costa has an incredible, almost flawless body and a striking runway presentation. She has amazing gray/green eyes and a penetrating gaze. Her only flaw was a strong, somewhat square jawline that could at times make her look a bit masculine, but this contestant was all woman! At first I found the hype of Larissa annoying, but eventually became a huge supporter of her classical South American beauty, her engaging gaze, her perfect figure, and above all her smart decisions and entertaining interview.
15. Miss Vietnam - Hoang Yen Vo suffered from the enthusiastic overhyping of her countrymen. She was so burnt out by Preliminaries, her performance was “almost” a caractature of a bad drag show. I sat almost, because she did pull it off in Swimsuit and her EG, although overly dramatic, was animated, ala Michelle Rouillard, Miss Colombia, strutting and original, posing and making extreme facial expressions that never crossed the line to comical but rather showed off her exotic features to their best. An admirable attempt for Vo.
Honorable Mentions go to 16. Miss Ireland (the best since Andrea Roche, a total stunner, next stop the runways of Milan, Paris, New York), 17. Miss Peru (such a stunning face, probably lost her place because of the public argument with Bolivia!), 18. Miss Ghana (statuesque with a strikingly beautiful face) , 19. Miss Angola (class, style, elegance), 20. Miss Cayman Islands (if Jennifer Hudson was a size 6, captivating), 21. Miss Italy (abbondanza in an evening gown, mama mia!), 22. Miss Nicaragua (hot, hot, hot!), 23. Miss Great Britain (a bonny spitfire, always mugging for the camera), 24. Miss India (lady in red, captivating Prelim EG, Lara Duta I miss you), and 25. Miss Guam (button cute and should have won Miss Photogenic over Natalie Glebovas husband!). If I was forced to pick a 26th it would have to be a three way tie between Miss Zambia, Miss Slovak Republic and Miss Jamaica!
Reporting from the Second (lust) and Third (gluttony) Circles of Hell, this is Pasquale “Patrick” Tripoldi, saying Ciao for now … until Miss Earth!

Talking about not winning being the best scenario. I met Ada, Miss DR in Miami at the baggage claim, she was wearing very minimal make-up and a sleek pony tail. Also wearing casual clothes that showed her incredible body line, and let me tell you this young woman is spectacular! I think that she is one of the most beautiful delegates I have ever met since I started. As Amelia Vega and Veruska Miss Venezuela in 1998 in Hawaii. We spoke with Ada a little while and I told her that I would work on getting her to model in Tokyo. To me she is a younger version of Tyra Banks. I told her that she can get plenty of work in Japan if she wants. I told Ada that I would talk to Magali and actually I need to follow up soon.

Miss Universe choreographer's interview sparks controversy
Michael Schwandt says he was misquoted
President of organization calls claims of rigging "false and misleading"
By Lisa Respers France
CNN
(CNN) -- An interview with a choreographer for the Miss Universe pageant spurred controversy Wednesday over alleged claims that Donald Trump personally selects some of the finalists.
Donald Trump is at the center of a brewing controversy over the Miss Universe finalists.
The Q&A with Michael Schwandt, which appeared on Guanabee.com, quotes him as saying that "it's just kind of common knowledge that [Trump] picks six of the top 15 single-handedly."
"And, his reason for doing so, as he told me and he's told the girls before, is that he left it all up to preliminary judging in the past, and some of the most beautiful women, in his opinion, were not in the top 15, and he was kind of upset about that," the story quotes Schwandt as saying. "And he decided that he would pick a certain number and let the judges pick a certain number."
Via e-mail, Schwandt said that he "was speaking in hypothetical jest" when he said Trump picks some of the finalists and said the mogul has never spoken to either him, or any of his team, about the selection process.
"The story posted on that site contains many misquotes and [is] highly inaccurate," Schwandt wrote. "I would like to disassociate myself from it completely and anything negative in regards to Miss Universe or even suggesting that Donald Trump 'rigs' his event. I'm perplexed as to why Guanabee.com would run a story such as this when they are aware that it is inaccurate."
Daniel Mauser, publisher of Guanabee, said his site stands by the story, which resulted after Schwandt was contacted about his role choreographing both the pageant and a much talked-about performance by reality-star-turned-singer Heidi Montag.

"Whatever you see quoted in the article is verbatim what he said," Mauser said. "So I can understand why he would want to retract those words, but unfortunately that was what was said."
A statement from Miss Universe Organization President Paula M. Shugart, released Wednesday, said that "to suggest the pageant is somehow orchestrated or 'rigged' is utterly false and misleading."
However, the statement also observed that Trump does play a role in selecting the finalists.
"In the 2009 Miss Universe competition, a preliminary panel of judges selected nine of the Top 15 and members of the Miss Universe Organization, including owner Donald J. Trump, selected the remaining six," the statement began.
The statement went on to say that "a separate panel of judges, introduced live at the Finals telecast, is solely responsible for the selection of the Top 10, Top 5 and the ultimate winner of the pageant."
"This system has been in place since 2005 and has always been fully disclosed to the contestants, their directors, the judges and the viewing audience," the statement said. "The procedure is overseen by the accounting firm of Ernst & Young and NBC Program Standards and Compliance. To in any way call into question the integrity of the judging process or suggest the pageant is somehow orchestrated or 'rigged' is utterly false and misleading."
Mauser describes Guanabee as an "entertainment Web site for the Hispanic community that covers the interests and portrayals of acculturated Hispanics in this country."
The Miss Universe pageant is very popular in the Hispanic community, Mauser said, and the story took a different turn after the alleged comments were published.
Schwandt, who has choreographed the pageant for the past few years, said in an e-mail to CNN that although Trump does meet with the contestants before the televised pageant, as far as he knows, it is just a gesture on Trump's part in his role as producer of the pageant.
"I know the Miss Universe Organization goes to great lengths to establish a preliminary and final panel of judges as well as different factors on which contestants are judged," Schwandt wrote. "However, I'm the last person to be quoted as saying anything in regard to the judging or selecting process, I'm the choreographer, I deal with that."

obviously we’re all about the Latinas who are competing in the Miss Universe pageant. What do you think, since you have a right up-close visual of it, what is their competitive advantage where they dominate the Universe?
Well, beauty is different in every culture of the world but when I think of “Miss Universe” I don’t typically think of blond hair and blue eyes. I don’t know why, even though that’s a look for Northern Europeans, that’s the look in Australia. When I think Miss Universe I think of a multi-ethnic look or more of an exotic Latin-inspired look. I also find that a lot of the Latin women just have a fire and a heat that you can’t teach, that’s a part of their culture. There’s just something that, I can’t put a name on it, but I find that a lot of the Latin contestants at this event have that extra oomph, that extra something, and they are not little girls. They are women.
You say that even with this year’s Miss Universe Stefania Hernandez—she’s only eighteen years old. She’s a baby.
–But she doesn’t look it! (Laughs) To me she doesn’t look it.
What is, specifically, your role with the Miss Universe organization?
It’s actually a lot broader than what you think when you hear “choreographer.” One of the reasons I was brought into the event, to the organization, was to try and make it a little bit more culturally relevant to the youth and make it a little more hip and contemporary. And they wanted someone who had nothing to do with pageants to add a fresh perspective from the music video/artist realm and try to make it less pageant-y.
Have you met Mr. Trump?
Oh yeah. I met him on the first show I did; I’ve done four shows so far. He didn’t come to Miss Universe last year in Vietnam because the Communist government wouldn’t give his plane clearance to land. He wouldn’t fly any other way, so he actually sent his son. And then Mr. Trump came to Miss USA this year and, actually, at this year’s Miss Universe he was the most present I’ve ever seen him at any of the events in years. He came and hung out the day before the show. He sat in on about five or six hours of rehearsal, which I was told he’d never done before. He came and hung out backstage at the dress rehearsal and talked to a lot of us. It’s kind of a surreal experience, actually. We all just kind of try to sit there and, you know — we get the phone call that he’s thirty minutes away and then we get the phone call that he’s fifteen minutes away and everyone’s trying to make it go smoothly.
Then he does do something that’s a bit odd. At all the shows, he pops in the day before the telecast and we line up all the girls in alphabetical order behind microphones. And they say their name, age and country. Then we line them up in alphabetical order in one single file line across the stage. And he basically walks by and has an assistant that takes notes on all the girls. And it’s just kind of common knowledge that he picks six of the top fifteen single-handedly. So, the other nine of the top fifteen are judged in a preliminary show the week before and picked by those judges, but he picks six of the top fifteen.
So, he’s orchestrating at least a portion of the results?
Right. And, his reason for doing so, as he told me and he’s told the girls before, is that he left it all up to preliminary judging in the past and some of the most beautiful women, in his opinion, were not in the top fifteen and he was kind of upset about that. And he decided that he would pick a certain number and let the judges pick a certain number.

Since the story was published, it’s been picked up by some very mainstream news outlets like FoxNews and The Huffington Post, which may be why Schwandt has contacted us to do damage control. In an email to our publisher, he wrote:
[Lining up the contestants for Donald Trump] isn’t even done at all the shows b/c he doesn’t even attend all of the shows. We do line up all the contestants so they can introduce themselves onstage just as they would in the preliminary show, but this is done so that Trump can collectively meet the girls, wish them luck before the big day, etc. I have no idea what further purpose this has other than a good-will gesture to the contestants in his competition. I am not a credible source for information on the selection process for final contestants. As I said I was speaking in jest about him picking any contestants at all.
Mr. Trump has never spoken directly to me or any member of my team other than to say “hello”. I would never go on the record saying he has told me anything or that he’s orchestrating the results. The statement above is not accurate it was a story told to me, I have no idea if it’s true or not, but he certainly didn’t say it to me..
While Mr. Schwandt has every reason to fear for his career based on this interview, the fact remains that he willingly gave an interview to our editor who transcribed Schwandt’s answers himself. Schwandt also sent us his personal photographs from the show to appear in the story. After the story was published, our editor told us that Mr. Schwandt wanted us to do some “serious editing” because he was under the mistaken impression that Donald Trump’s selective process was an “open secret” and the Miss Universe people, NBC Universal and Donald Trump’s lawyers felt otherwise. We put in calls to Donald Trump’s representation, the Miss Universe Organization’s representation and NBC Universal’s representation. The only ones who got back to us were NBC Universal, a partner in the Miss Universe pageant, who told us we should direct our questions to the Miss Universe Organization.
Meanwhile the Miss Universe Organization told Fox News entertainment site 411 that it’s broadcast before the show that Donald Trump does have a part in picking 6 of the 15 finalists, and this policy, which has been in place since 2005, is “fully disclosed to all those associated with the pageant and the procedure is overseen by the accounting firm of Ernst & Young and NBC Program Standards and Compliance.”
