Thirty Years of Trial and Error

by David Calderwood

When it comes to choosing guns, thirty years of hits and misses has taught me that a gun I don’t like to shoot won’t accompany me to the range. Comfort is thus a key consideration when choosing a firearm.

Especially with handguns, accuracy is required for effect. Every handgun cartridge has documented instances where a determined attacker absorbed hit after center-of-mass hit and kept right on being a threat. The reality is that even someone with holes in their heart can keep going long enough to kill. Only solid hits on the central nervous system are decisive and instant fight-stoppers.

People who buy someone else’s favorite hand cannon (sorry for the offensive T-shirt in the link), shoot it a couple times and put it in a drawer to gather dust may not be helping themselves. It’s not much better if the shooter develops a flinch from anticipating recoil, muzzle blast or being hit by ejected cases from their gun.

For many, the answer lies in choosing guns that are not so powerful as to discourage practice. Among handguns a great example is the 9mm Luger. When loaded with 124 grain or 147 grain jacketed hollow points this cartridge typically performs well in gelatin testing.

There are many great gun designs (here, here, here, here, here, etc.) that chamber the 9mm. My favorites are the Glock and (cover your ears, Mr. Browning) and model 1911-A1.

The Glock pistol chambered for 9mm is simplicity itself, reliable, relatively easy to master, has magazines of capacities varying from 10 rounds to the 33-round version essential for battling zombie hordes (legality depending on where you live), and is surprisingly customizable.

1911-style pistols often have among the best triggers of all repeating firearms. Most 1911 pistols are chambered for the original 45 ACP cartridge, a wonderful round designed around military specifications set in the last days of the horse cavalry. It was intended to equal the 45 Colt revolver cartridge, useful for among other things shooting horses weighing half a ton from under their riders.

What I sent Ms. DeCoster on her open carry article. -- Submariner, 03:33:14 07/29/09 Wed [1]

While I applaud the spirit of the folks in San Diego, I do not see their efforts as particularly practical.

Open carry gives away tactical advantage. The badguy knows you are carrying. Who moves up on his target priority list? Worse, in Kalifornia, he knows or ought to know that your sidearm is unloaded. Deterrent to crime? Hardly.

How quickly can these folks acquire and identify their target, draw, insert a magazine, rack the slide and engage? How about doing the same with a revolver and speed loader?

How long do you have in a gun fight?

The rest of your life...

[Edit]

Open carry in OH... -- strat, 08:18:17 07/28/09 Tue [1]

...used to be legal to openly carry a loaded gun here,
as a policeman buddy once explained to me back in the
day (pre-1985). He did say the police would check out
(shake down) someone doing so, which is no surprise to
me really. Not sure what the legal status is now on
open carry here.

Methinks if very many folks in these here parts (a big
chitty) started to "open carry" we'd see some legislation.
Now, in some locales, like back up in the Hills (KY),
it's safe to assume EVERYONE carries. The local mounties
wink at the practice more often than not in those places.

In my book, it pays to be on relatively good terms with
the local mounties, or at least one or two of them. They
can be rather selective at times. Just ask Henry Louis
Gates. :)

open carry -- AeweWuf, 04:24:24 07/28/09 Tue [1]

open carry, in Oregon, i believe means loaded.
I tested this theory in '91. A county mounty
pulled over the K1 Blazer we were in. I tossed
the desert eagle on the dash, with clip inserted.
The mounty asked if they were loaded. We said that
they were loaded, and nothing else. He gave us some
lame reason for the stop, turn signals on an isolated
dirt road with nowhere to turn... *smirk*
He didn't take it any further and just left in the
direction he was going in the first place.

Open carry in San Diego -- Earl, 23:17:56 07/27/09 Mon [1]

It’s a beautiful day in Pacific Beach as Nate approaches the bronze pelican statue on the boardwalk. He’s slight and blond, spectacled and clad in jeans and an army-green T-shirt. He squints. The sun’s so bright overhead that he is prompted to spray a fine mist of sunblock over his fair skin to stave off a burn.

I’ve never met Nate before, but I know it’s him (a) because I’ve seen his picture and (b) due to the handgun that sits on a holster against his hip. I’m about to get up from where I’m sitting and introduce myself when someone else beats me to the punch. A scraggly-looking beachgoer, a man of indeterminable age because he is so weather-beaten, approaches.

“What’s that for, bro?” he asks, pointing in the direction of Nate’s gun, a Taurus Tracker .44 Magnum revolver.

LRC Bloggers: What Are Your Gun Choices for Personal Protection?
Posted by Karen De Coster on July 26, 2009 02:13 PM

I was asked to start what we hope will become a sequence of blog posts from LRC bloggers talking about what guns they prefer for purposes of self-preservation in a defensive mode (yep, The Boss had something to do with this). The question is – What do you prefer to own or carry? Before I answer my own question, that question brings me to this video interview with Ted Nugent (thanks to Richard Nikoley for the tip). Indeed, make fun of my linking to Ted if it amuses you, but there is virtually no one, especially of celebrity status, who so consistently gets it so right and so clear on guns and self-defense. I am so unforgiving of anyone – especially the allegedly pro-gun yet pro-permit Republican types – who thinks that we need, or should have, a series of licenses and permits (permissions from self-serving authorities) in order to stand prepared to defend ourselves. Anyone who thinks I should have to grovel at the feet of local establishment officials to be granted government licenses in order to exercise my natural rights to defend myself and my property is on par with Satan. Elected officials cannot and will not defend me, so I will do it myself, whether or not their authoritarian-tainted paper with my name on it gets their stamp of government approval. And how dare they, the citizen tyrants who lecture me on the necessity of official government licenses, operating with their minuscule knowledge of the Constitution, the Second Amendment, the traditions of our American roots, and natural rights. And these wretched people believe they are acting favorable to the self-defense view by telling the rest of us they support gun rights if and when our privileges are fully in line with all state permissions and enforced by the jack boots of arbitrary government laws.

As Nugent says, the Second Amendment, along with the understanding of natural rights, is so obvious that it is insane that this issue is an argument. My view: no one should ever declare statements, or issue passes, licenses, or whatnot, that tell another individual where, when, and how (or if!) they can defend themselves (obeying private property rules, of course). How politically incorrect has it become, even among the “pro-gun” Republican-conservative types, to insist, as I do, that there should never be any limitation whatsoever on the ownership and carry habits of firearms, and that anything else is undeniably totalitarian. The NRA has long been limp on this issue; thank goodness Nugent remains on its board. GOA (Gun Owners of America) is better, and JPFO (Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership) is unyielding.

For me, asking me what I prefer to use for personal protection doesn’t get a clear-cut answer. In fact it’s complicated because of the many things I do, and each situation demands a unique approach. It’s like shoes, only I say, Gee, what gun do I carry today? Except that unlike most women, I like guns better than shoes. My choice of choices is the 1911 .45 ACP, with mine being the Taurus in the duotone model. When I told Mr. Rockwell why I like the .45, he asked that I please not spell it out. I like it because it stops s _ _ _. My Ruger LCP .380 makes a nice backup piece, but also, due to its size and weight, it is my choice of weapon when I am rollerblading or cycling (mountain biking and road), or when I am working outside on the property and wearing shorts and summer clothing. It’s a great pocket gun, even for someone as small as me. I’ll use a Speer Gold Dot Hollow Point or a Buffalo Bore +P. I also carry a Smith & Wesson .38 Model 642 Airweight. I am also adding a Springfield Armory sub-compact 3″ 9mm to the concealed carry closet.

One of my favorite rifles, as my friend Michael Gaddy knows, is the Springfield Armory M1A SOCOM. At home, my Remington 870 Express 20-gauge shotgun, an all-American workhorse, makes a fine home defense weapon, and the youth model is especially great for smaller shooters. This past weekend I shot a Barrett .50 BMG Model 99, and what a treat that was! At $6k for the gun, scope, mount, etc., and about $5-6 per round, I won’t be buying one of those soon.

LRC bloggers, please do reply to this post and chime in with your preferences. LRC writers who don’t/won’t blog: email me (click on my name above for my address) and I will blog yours for you if you’d like. Update: Dear gentlemen, PLEASE REFRAIN from writing me to “give a woman advice.”

Pyrite, the only load I load to max is for deer hunting and have used it for years. The other is SD load in .45. I used
8.5grs of Blue Dot with 230gr Winchester JHP's. That's actually 1.5grs under max.(some books)
I agree a .357 @ 1200 is a great SD load-those full house .357 are hard to shoot and gives me a world class flinch
I THINK (not sure at all on this) but I think I use 12.5 of Blue Dot with a 125gr SJHP. About 1400 FPS but they sure screw up the rabbits!
BTW-I got 1000 Large pistol CCI's a 1000 each of Remington small and large pistol tonight. Limit of 1000 per customer

Each time for misfires. All calibers, all guns.
I won't buy a Federal EVER again.

of 3-4 weeks from now....Locally, however, we're seeing
very, very few sellers of sludge [i.e. no folks hauling
it in to sell TO us], and, conversely, are going through
100-300-oz. a day in small sales of 1-ozers and 10-oz. bars
on a regular basis....not too many seeking 100-ozers as of
late, however, as most sales are still the "under $500."
variety....which is fine by me as it's too hard to FIND
reasonable supplies of 100-ozers at under + $60. over for
'name brands' ....that's still too high relative to what
we saw for many years ( +$.25-$.35 over was the "norm" )
but it may stay that strong, too....

why would CS be anti-fungal and anti bacterial and not anti-viral.? these are all single cell living organisms-react and feed in much the same way--CS, simple put, destroys the breathing apparatus of all three-virus seem to be somewhat stronger thereby requiring closer proximity of the colloid to cell surfact to effect the same result wherein the kill rate is somewhat slower-but-still quite effective-at least that has been my experience.......JC

Thanks cashcobb. I corresponded with BullishonBronze who recommended the same brand as you (probably because he got the recommendation from you too). I'm going to try a bottle of their product. If you're around and have time to answer a question: I have never been convinced of CS ability to be anti-viral although it's amazing as an anti-bacterial agent and anti-fungal. What's your take on the anti-viral ability of CS and how would CS be anti-viral?

Thanks!

Most likely the CS with Zytel (plastic) is what they called Carbon V. Really a 1095 steel with a touch of vanadium.
Good steel but not stainless.
I think the Leek is AUS-8 which is a mid-grade stainless.
There's less difference in steels than they want you to think.
If it holds an edge, it's good.
There's a couple steels that hold a LOOOOOONNNNNNGGGG time.
And they resist sharpening just as well.

"Well," Granny snickered. "Let's relive
some old times."

Whereupon, the two stripped to the buff and sat down at the
table.

"You know, honey," the little old lady
breathlessly replied, "My nipples are

"I wouldn't be surprised," replied Gramps.

Well maybe not your eye, but for sure your EAR! At least I did. Fuck!
Hearing in left ear almost zero now.
Sondra hadn't shot a gun since the last fest so we went up in da hills on Wednesday. Took the 22 pistol, a couple 22 rifles (to decide which one to bring to Libby) and a .223.
So off we go and get partway there and remember that we forgot ear plugs. So we stop and buy a couple brands cuz they didn't have the usual one.
I tried what I ...thought... would be the best brand. I had muffs, but it was hot and muffs are sweaty. (MISTAKE)
Standing on Sondra's left, she touched one off with the 22 pistol and it HURT my right ear. I stuck my finger in it while she finished the mag and then switched brand of plug.
I think it was TOO LATE.
Although I didn't notice it that day, by yesterday I had almost no hearing in my left ear and very little in the right.
I've had tinnitus for 50 years from shootin a .45 with NO ear protection but learned to live with it and it was NUTTIN like this bitch.

o.k. -- here's the Shootin' Events....pay attention, now.... -- Norwester, 21:59:47 07/05/09 Sun [1]

...#1 - Pistol Shoot: 50', standing, sitting, over-the-
shoulder, between-the-legs, whatever you think
you can use effectively....NO bench rests or
knee rests (if sitting) or tripods or monopods
or bipods or restin' it on someone's shoulder...
"FREE HAND", in other words, or two hands in most
cases, depending on how late you were up playing
poker the night before....

....#2 - .22 Rifle Shoot....100' target....this year, let's
make it UNIFORMLY STANDING-UP ONLY....no more of
the prone or kneeling positions...STANDING SHOTS
ONLY....OPEN SIGHTS ONLY....steadiest shooters will
win the prizes....start practicin' !

....#3 - the ANY BORE Rifle Shoot -- 75 Yards....NO 50 BMGs
allowed as they'd tear up the target stands! So,
any OTHER caliber of rifle is allowed, with either
open or TELESCOPIC sights...or lazer sights, if
yours are effective at that range....THIS IS A
FREE-STANDING EVENT, TOO, no prone or kneeling
rests....steady shooting will win it.....

(....as PieRite scrambles to price Crimson Trace lazer
sights for his .22...........)

THAT'S THE PROGRAM.....probably NO clay pigeon shoot-off
as we can't monopolize BOTH areas of the range for the
whole day.....sorry....leave the stubby-20 at home, PieRite
'cause you CAN'T USE IT for the RIFLE shoot, either!!!

If you find a need for a TIE BREAKER in any of the events, I have a doozie.
This is a nearly impossible feat, but scoring could be made just from who comes CLOSEST.

The event would be: PLEASING PYRITE !!!

Now if that ain't as close to impossible as it gits, I doone know wot is.

Also, I would like to relieve any difficulties with ACCOMODATIONS if I can.

We ALREADY have our ressavayshuns at da Caboose.

BUT.. If anyone shows up TOO LATE, their WIVES can stay with me. The GUYS can sleep in Cobb's driveway or wotever.

This could also be counted toward the TIE BREAKER event, too.

of other motels nearby and across the street, so check the
general listings here:

Besides the Caboose, probably the two nicer places are:

Venture Motor Inn & Restaurant
443 Hwy 2 W, Libby, MT 59923, (406) 293-7711

....both of these right in the same area as the Caboose
and alongside or across the street from the Treasure
