Subject: It did so well on Friday nights, but I guess not well enough in the prefered demographics. What I don't get is that if CBS cancelled JAG because they didn't like the demographics, then whey did they bring in the JAG guy? Obviously the following he had from JAG no matter how numerous, were of the wrong age group. So it wouldn't have mattered whatsoever how many JAG fans switched to CTH, it still would have been cancelled.

[> [> I don't think that it was so much the case for demographics, because even that was changing in favor of CTH in the end. I think CBS is under the impression that they have to become more cutting edge and daring to compete. (inside please.....) -- Dani R, 13:50:25 05/16/07 Wed [1]

Their stories need zombies and vampires which more than likely will not work. They can use the excuse that it is the demographics as a means to explain cancellation, but I think a lot has to do with the way the stories were written. While I am in the preferred demographics, I really don't care about cutting edge or daring, the show needed to combine the personal with the professional like they did in Jimmy's episode with the murder of his friend, the Judge. If they had started this from the beginning, they would have been able to show JAE in all of his glory. As much as I hate to admit it, the writers didn't know how to communicate the characters to the public until the end. Let's hope DJE gets himself into a show that can showcase his ability to do more than scowl and walk down a hall (although I have never seen anyone do it sexier or hotter than him).

[> [> [> LOL at your last sentence about DJE's acting. Regarding CBS, what's the problem with being the network that caters to an audience of "a certain age"?? It may not be cool or hip, but it's certainly profitable. -- The Chief (I'd certainly choose $$$$ over coolness, but then again, I'm not in Hollyweird), 17:22:34 05/16/07 Wed [1]

[> [> [> [> The problem is that catering to the older crowd *isn't* profitable. Advertisers are willing to pay more for ads on shows that have younger viewers - even if the shows have fewer viewers. inside -- Ann, 20:26:22 05/16/07 Wed [1]

The money from ads pays a lot of the production costs for each show - so the networks are kind of stuck with the situation.

The irony is that until the sixties, this wasn't the case. The advertisers paid more for whatever show had the most viewers. Then ABC noticed that they had more shows watched by younger viewers ( we baby boomers) even though watched by fewer total people. They used the statistics to convince advertisers that it made more sense to reach young people (since that's who was watching ABC back then). The rest is history. From what I've read, there are actually no scientifically documented facts that prove that younger viewers are truly more likely to buy products they see advertised on TV. Kids - maybe. But not 18-35 year olds. And as has been said a million times, that age group isn't home on Friday watching anything on TV.

[> [> They can't even get their info right about demographics. They seem convinced nobody under 80 watches any sort of murder mystery, no matter what you tell them. And replacing CTH with that Horror show makes me sick. -- Meg, 18:56:54 05/17/07 Thu [1]
