I feel the same way as you, although I think I came to this realization alot earlier. It is frustrating, but people like DJE who aren't really in the military (or who aren't at least married to it) will never truly "get it". They can respect it or support it or hate it or be indifferent to it, but they will never understand what you put into words in your above posts unless they have lived the life. I'm sure DJE is a nice guy in real life and probably supports the military, but like others have pointed out, he is an actor and needs to work and he's probably only looking at this as a way to expand his resume as to the type of characters he has played. I know it's hard, but because he's never really been a part of the military, it probably would never occur to him that he would be perpetuating this type of stereotype.

Actually, what disappoints me more is that he didn't cut his hair! I mean that at least is superficial and he should have known better. To try and get away with not cutting his hair is a cop-out in my opinion. I know he used to hate getting his hair cut and all, but sheesh, would it have killed him to cut his hair over his ears for one part? I know actors have done a lot more than that for a part - it's not like he had to shave his head bald or anything. To see him wearing that uniform with his hair that long just seems disrespectful when I know he knows better.

Anyway, I still love the character of Harm and always will, and I will continue to admire DJE on from a visual perspective for sure, but as to the real DJE, I don't profess to know the man at all or what his beliefs and convictions are so I try to leave that out of it altogether.

[> [> [> Gibs, if youre still out there....thanks for the post, and I really think you are right. You have to have been 'in' the life to get it and its probably not fair for me to expect him to. About the haircut...I've been thinking about this and I wonder. I know he hates having his hair cut, but...maybe he didnt because he didnt want to look like Harm in an Army uniform. This is me giving him the beneift of the doubt, big time, but as I said, it was just a thought. (I hope thats true) -- mkim, 20:23:10 05/03/09 Sun [1]

is if it conflicted with something else he was shooting. Like for example, if he was filming Knights of Bloodsteel at the same time and needed to have longer hair to have something for the hair extensions to go on to. But I think that would be a bad decision for the Director to make (to agree to the long hair) - they obviously didn't have any military advisors (or at least, not very good ones). To me that's a huge thing - if I see a show with a military person in it and there's something really obviously wrong - like having long hair or their headdress on wrong (a really annoying point for me lol) or saluting without their headdress - I most likely won't even watch it. That little clip up there reminded me of just the kind of thing I usually avoid for those reasons.

I think a part of what made Harm (and the show) so good on JAG was b/c of really good military advisors - and I begrudgingly have to give credit to DPB there b/c, having been in the Marines, he recognized how important that was.
