What she brings to the table and the preparation she and the board decide to focus on, coupled with her work ethic and drive, may put her in line to achieve Top 10 or even Top 5 rankings. However, we all know that there is no guarantee. Preparation, timing and a little bit of luck factor in to a contestant’s placement at state as well. A ton of work goes into a 10-minute interview and approximately ten minutes of stage competition. While I agree that Miss West Sound has not been around for very long and there are more established programs in Washington State, I personally take offense to your implication that the Miss West Sound Board does not offer the preparation that a girl needs in order to do well. Here is a history lesson for you regarding the five years Miss West Sound has been operational: Our first titleholder, Tonie Duchemin, made the Top 10. Sure, we provided some of the tools and prep that she needed, but Tonie did the work. Maybe Whitney Glebe did not make Top 10, but she was loved by our community and was an exceptional titleholder. Hannah Price was very close to making the 10, but it was a very competitive year. Even though she did well, others did too. Hannah came back the next year and took 1st Runner Up. Her mentor provided her with the tools to improve and Hannah did what was necessary. Miss West Sound was definitely a stepping-stone for her and we are still proud that we get to list her name as a former. Megan Leibold was strong from the beginning of her run in MAO. She took time to compete in other programs to gain the skills she felt she needed and ran for Miss West Sound. She did an incredible job at state and as a titleholder that year. With all of that experience under her belt, she really went for it as Miss Pierce County, taking 2nd Runner Up at state and Top 10 as the Washington Sweetheart. Megan McCormick received Non-Finalist Talent as Miss West Sound and is coming back as Miss Eastside. Brittney Brown represented our program as the Teen before we held a teen competition and placed in the Top 10 two years in a row. She earned the Miss Tahoma sweeper title during her first year competing as a Miss and just wait until you see Cherisse Martinelli on stage this year…. You cannot dictate the success of a local program on how many of their titleholders have placed at the state level. I hope that most, if not all of them, will tell you that they feel they had a successful year as Miss West Sound. We place a lot of value in how we treat our contestants and titleholders. We encourage them to achieve their full potential and don't feel it is worthwhile to tear them down in the process. We try to be supportive of their other obligations, while making sure they put Miss West Sound toward the top of their list. We work very hard to be flexible. Megan M attended CWU during her year as Miss West Sound and had no issue with returning home to fulfill an obligation. If she was unable to make an appearance, our teen represented for her. Tonie worked at SeaTac during her year and although it may have been difficult at times, we worked to make sure she was able to balance her other obligations with Miss West Sound duties. Discouraging a potential contestant from competing in her hometown local does a disservice to that girl and her community. If she wins her local and does not place at state, she comes back to try again. They never truly lose if they are receiving scholarship money, improve their life skills and maybe make a few friends along the way. Yes, competing at a local where she attends school is easier geographically, but to say (and although you did a bit of back-peddling after the fact, you did say it) that Miss West Sound does not prepare their girls for state is very unfair and misrepresents what our mission should be. I love to see contestants compete for their locals repeatedly. If they are only competing to win that coveted title, they may find that they missed out on a lot of scholarship money and positive experiences that they would have received otherwise. For those of you who would like valid information, versus outside opinion and sometimes inaccurate information, I encourage you to reach out to contestants, titleholders and volunteers of the program you are considering. If you are in Kitsap County or a county close to us that does not have a local program (Mason, Clallam and parts of Jefferson), you can start with me. I am including my name, to keep things real and entice the rest of our message board posters to do the same. The OP was asking regarding location while in college and what would be easier for her. A local near her school where she lives would be easier. Many, in fact every single poster said it was not about the girls, their placement, or you Amanda. Posters even said they encouraged her to enter the west sound local and she would be welcome with open arms. Regardless of the attempts to make a fight WHERE THERE IS NO FIGHT, OP I wish you all the best in your choice in a local. You do what is best for you. For 1 comment that other locals have better prep is an opinion. And I'm sure other locals do have better prep than other locals. I can not believe that sentence is what sent this into a tailspin. In almost every single post people are saying your pageant is great amanda. Why are you attacking posters on here for stating an opinion and it's not a slanderous comment or opinion at that. This is why pageants are getting ridiculous. Amanda your fabulous, I refuse to continue this argument and keep it going. It makes everyone look ridiculous. I simply defended our board and the titleholders who we have been blessed to have. I will end (hopefully) this thread by stating that opinions are incredible things to possess as long as you use them to build others up instead of passively aggressively and anonymously (not really) using them to tear someone else down. Miss West Sound has its share of challenges, just like any other program. I know it is great and not because of me. Because of the support of some fantastic people.
