Factor in the merit scholarships offered and the ability to enroll in all classes and graduate in four years (less than four if you bring in AP credits). I know students in state schools that take 5 plus years to graduate because the classes they need to graduate are full.

IMO you get a much better bang for your buck at small private colleges. State schools are big bucks too and your kid will be sitting in a lecture hall with hundreds of other students. Professors can't be bothered with teaching--classes are taught by grad students.
