Factor in the merit scholarships offered and the ability to enroll in all classes and graduate in four years (less than four if you bring in AP credits). I know students in state schools that take 5 plus years to graduate because the classes they need to graduate are full.

IMO you get a much better bang for your buck at small private colleges. State schools are big bucks too and your kid will be sitting in a lecture hall with hundreds of other students. Professors can't be bothered with teaching--classes are taught by grad students.

  - Top schools will only accept an AP score of 5, and it cannot count for a required course in your major. Also, to be a full time student you have to be taking a minimum amount of credits anyways -- it depends, 07:26:43 11/03/09 Tue

        DD is on merit sch'ship @ sm liberal arts college & received credit for AP classes but it won't shorten her 4 yrs (which is fine due to scholarship) Her major is 1 which requires so many specific -- our experience, 05:58:22 11/04/09 Wed

I agree, this has been tru 4 us. DD got enough in merit scholarship to make our out of pocket the same as what we'd pay at our state u. She'll finish in 4 yrs, has guaranteed housing, sm class size (NT) -- I know what you are saying, it's true for us, 07:17:47 11/03/09 Tue
