class size often depends more on the department and the course level than the size of the school itself. (went to a school with 10,000 undergrads, the only huge classes were 100 level in things like science, all other classes had no more than 30 and most had 15.)

You can get profs who don't care at any school. Likewise you will find really dedicated profs at private and state schools.

Lastly, APs don't always transfer. At my school they allowed you to skip the intro level classes but they did not give you any college credits.
