Subject: Traveling with elderly parent

My MIL has asked my husband to take her to Scotland (we live in California), probably this May. She is 86, in decent mental shape, but without a lot of stamina or ability to walk very much. Hubs knows it will have to be slow-paced trip, and is OK with that. Has anyone done this? Any suggestions? Would it be better to take one long flight from SF to Heathrow, or take a flight with stopover on East Coast? TIA!
