Classes which foster discussion and sharing (rather than lectures / movies / etc) are great ways to meet people. I have found art classes in particular to be very social; any beginner class would have a low barrier to entry, photography in particular perhaps.

I also recently returned to playing a sport I had played in high school. I discovered that there are lots of pickup games and leagues for adults in a wide variety of sports from soccer and volleyball to kickball, sailing, and hockey. There are also a wide variety of adult dance classes. Ask around. It can take a little time to assimilate into the group but I've found people to be very welcoming and friendly.

All of these activities usually have social events connected to them - lunch, dinner, drinks after, going to an exhibit, performance, or sporting event. Sometimes it feels hard to say yes to these initially but the payoff is great.

I've gained several very close friends this way and also lots of more casual friends and we all have a good time together.
