The Nature Hands On cruises by Miss Paradise and the Nature Hands on program at Tarpon Bay Explorers are both GREAT! If you plan to do a dolphin cruise, skip it and do the nature one instead, but you do get out of the boat to search for and net small ocean life. My daughter loved both of these as she got to handle sea horses, pufferfish, living mollusks and other fun wildlife. Plan to tip boat captains and presenters too.
Also, the Animal Rescue progam C.R.O.W. is supposed to be fun, but I have never seen it.
The shell museum is fabulous and has a hands on area just for small children.
Best shelling and play beach for children is the light house beach. The gulf is very gentle and shallow on the east end.
The best beach for sunsets and wading birds is Turner Beach, over between Sanibel and Captiva. You can usually see some gorgeous herons and pelicans there. It even seems some of the Great Herons come to watch the sunset.
I, personally, WOULD NOT take my children to Matzaluna's. It is way overpriced and the service was not that good. Bubble Room on Captiva is very kitschy and kids love it! The prices are somewhat expensive, but it is worth it. Also, Island Cow looks fun for kids.
