Kelly~ Sanibel in September is a great time for snorkeling...as long as there isn't any red tide or gobs of red algae. Also, I prefer shelling lighthouse beach best of all...you can find all kinds of shells there, including larger ones. Generally, you have to snorkel further our to find larger shells, as the wash up broken a lot. Also, the bay side is just on the other side and is another place to find larger shells. I have found the best time to find larger shells in after big storms have stirred things up! I usually shell right near the light house and the pier. Turner beach is GREAT for scallops and venus sunray clams, but the surf is rough...making it very hard to snorkel there and breaking up most shells. I have never had any luck at Bowman's Beach or Captiva, but I have only been to them a few times each. I hope that helps!
By the way, I found my junonia snorkeling about 50 yards or so from shore. (I hope yards is right...it was quite aways out and at low tide... I was about chest deep and I am 5 7 1/2 ft. tall). My sister found one the exact same day in nearly the same spot. We also find lots of larger olives and cones, but it does require some searching and work. We spend about 5 hours a day in water, depending on tides.)
