Kevin, that's a very good question. As I was researching our trip for July, checking rates, etc. I noticed that the rates have risen at certain places substantially since last summer. I thought it odd, since the islands seem to need the tourist dollar. With increasing costs, some families may not be able to visit and then what?

In our case, I continued digging and found an owner who would rent to us at a discount that we could not get booking directly thru the condo association office. I would suggest to anyone with interest in visiting to do their homework in advance.

I feel that the rate increases have come at a bad time. Not that I want to start a nasty discussion, I love Sanibel as much as the next person on this message board. We plan to spend plenty of money at restaurants and shops when we go down. But, does anyone feel that the tourists are paying more in rental fees this year to help some properties recoup from the damage of Hurricane Charley? Isn't that why you have insurance?
