Up until age 13 or 14 both boys and girls benefit from spanking. As they get older sometimes spanking can be replaced for certain misdeeds, perhaps with short allowances or extra chores, groundings and things of that nature.
Also there are times when less punishment is needed and there are times when more is needed. In our house there have been months when no spankings have been given and there are months when all of the kids have found themselves getting the hairbrush.
Knowing when to spank helps everybody understand what is allowed or not allowed.
