Recently, I had a conversation with the mom of, by her own admission, a spoiled teenage daughter whom, even at 18 and college-bound, she was on the verge of paddling. This mom was reluctant to do so until I pointed, and she agreed, that her daughter already knew she deserved a paddling and probably expected it. More importantly, the mom agreed from her own experience as a teen, that girls internalize paddling, blame their behavior for having to be paddled, and use the lessons learned to guide their future behavior.
Most parents with experience raising both boys and girls acknowledge that teenage boys do not exhibit the same response. They are more likely to resist paddling and blame the parent rather than their behavior for the paddling.
Generally, parents are better off if they can control common childhood misbehaviors by the time their children reach their teenage years. The advantage that parents of daughters have is being able to effectively paddle well into the teen years and, if necessary, sometimes beyond.
