"The strangest secret in the world is that you become what you think about." - Earl Nightingale

The very first step to understanding how our "auto-pilot" subconscious is affecting our lives is to become aware. We have to be able to be aware of our conscious thoughts first. To continue with the previous authors ideas, he suggests: "saying "NEXT or "SWITCH" the instant you catch yourself in the middle of a negative thought or self-defeating question. Then, immediately replace it with a positive thought, affirmation, or an empowering question. Simply, overwrite the old thought with a new one. Replace, "I'll try" with "I'll do it". Instead of "I should" say "I must". Completely banish "I can't" from your vocabulary. Soon you'll find that your mind switches its "polarity" and the negative thoughts pop up less."

SO, the idea is, with enough practice at re-training your thoughts, you start to think more about "I am", rather than "I am not" thoughts. Instead of thinking I am/am not an addict.", the thought is "I am a painter/gardener/student, etc." Instead of "I am not an alcoholic.", the thought is "I am enjoying sobriety." With practice one becomes what one thinks, and is no longer thinking about drugs or alcohol at all, positive or negative, because one is too busy being all kinds of other positive things.

When I was at SSH one of the things I remember thinking was "This is going to work for me." Also, "I am going to have a high aversion to drugs and alcohol." And you know what? I did. Each day of my treatment I told myself my aversion level on that 0 to 10 scale was increasing. I didn't allow that thought to change. I never had a doubt, because I wouldn't let myself doubt it. I never gave myself another choice. I kept an open mind and told myself that by the end of this whole treatment my aversion level was going to be off the chart. And, you know what? It was. I helped myself in that mental preparation. It worked! And, I've spoken with many grads who employed the same technique. It worked for them too!

I still practice this. Negative thoughts do pop up every once in a while. But, I don't ever think of myself as an addict anymore. There isn't any room for thinking for or against it really. I do try not to get lazy and stop controlling what I may thinking of on a conscious level though. It takes practice.
Speaking of practice... that is the other thing needed to replace negative thoughts with positive thoughts. It is repetition. Remember, about 98% of what we think tomorrow will be just like, or similar to, the thoughts we think today. So, the more positive thoughts you have today, the more you will have tomorrow, and the next day, and the next.
