For those of you who were able to view the HBO ADDICTION series, I am curious as to what you thought.
I, personally, thought this was, overall, a great series. I'm really glad they showed, and explained the medical side of this, and the continuing research being done.
I also thought the stories were realistic, and showed the gravity of an addicts situation- Mainly, the immense difficulty people have getting rid of an addiction.
But, the biggest impression I got was how ahead of his time Dr. Shadel was...and it looks like still is.
I know they did show some medications they were giving the test "subjects" as working pretty good. But, I realized that even if one pops a pill and that medication helps to take up receptors in the brain preventing the high, it still didn't really keep the person from taking the drug. It didn't take away the "want to". I also know they have some meds that cause illness when a drug is ingested which, after enough of those experiences, could cause aversion. However, it is reliant on the person taking the drug right before being in a situation where using may be a possibility. SO, that person could opt out of taking the medication.
I guess I still feel like the researchers may be barking up the wrong tree.
It seems to me that when aversion is tied to all one's sense organs, which, of course pacts a powerful message to the brain, then all bases are covered. With the help of the positive messages being programmed in during the re-hab interviews, it seems like a much more powerful combination then just taking a medication by itself. Because, then one wouldn't want to take the drug in the first place, and no other medication is needed.
Love to hear what others thought about this.
