I've noticed that some of those old habits from drinking days can feel like they might be cravings, when actually, they're not. I think it's important to be aware of that. It is no longer possible to habitually engage in activities that were part of the drug or alcohol use. Including attitudes and thoughts. For a lot of us drug use and drinking were a part of almost every activity. And so, that means a major lifestyle change. It is the part of the work we need to do in order to completely rid ourselves of the addiction. Once we have had the courage to walk through those doors at SSH for treatment we have started a process that we have to follow through on once we leave that part of the program. It is imperative to keep the momentum up after the 10 day stay by getting to those continuing care plans right away. Today! Not a week or 2 later.
Life must change, else we would always feel like something is missing. The habit is missing. And, if we are unaware then I think it could be possible to pick up that first drink, or use that first time, simply out of habit, even if there really is no craving. One grad mentioned that he started drinking again, not because of a craving, but because he was bored. He hadn't done enough to change his habits and thoughts and actually suffered through the aversion, breaking out in sweats, because of habit.
I can no longer afford to allow unhealthy habits, whether through action, or thoughts, to control my world.
Life is too short. Let those habits go, and replace them with new, more healthful ones.
