Subject: SOFT SPOT Time!

Earlier today I was thinking about my soft spot for Miss Universe, and it hasn't been discussed much in any of the threads here this year.

I believe the definition of a Soft Spot is a girl who charms you and whose name you don't expect to hear called for the semifinals for one reason or another -- but it sure would thrill you if she made it!

Mine's Miss Ireland. I thought her crowning photos were amazing but I've hardly heard a peep about her on the boards in the pageant lead-up. I haven't yet seen what dress she wore in the prelims and I'm hoping she made a good choice.

So -- who's yours???

Subject: Since I missed chat last night and it doesn't appear to have been mentioned yet, I thought I would ask -- why is Japan carrying a purse or a pom-pom (I can't tell which it is, although I could see her breaking into a cheer in the middle of competition) on stage during evening prelims at Miss Universe? Granted, the EG choices of several contestants left me with only a Top 8 instead of Top 15, but accessories????? Really???

I have a challenge for all of you... try to find one bad picture of Crystle during the almost month she's been in Vietnam. Go ahead, try it. I can honestly say I have not seen ONE bad picture of her... whether she's posing for the camera or it's an action shot... she looks virtually flawless in every picture. I have not been a huge Crystle fan. I always root for USA, and while she was not my pick to win, I definitely understood her win. However, you can definitely count me in her fan club... I totally get it. I see where others don't, but I have now seen the light. She is amazing. And, not only does she look great, she has and will be a classy rep for the USofA throughout her reign and continue the good work done by Rachel Smith.

All hail Miss USA!

Miss Washington Executive Field Director Mike Miller tells TMZ the organization is "embarrassed," and issued this lengthy statement:

Elyse Umemoto is an outstanding young woman and has been a brilliant representative for the Miss Washington Scholarship Organization. We continue to be very proud of her. She is known for her raucous sense of humor and clowning around. It is unfortunate that her behavior in unguarded moments has attracted attention.

The Miss Washington Scholarship Organization is embarrassed by the pictures you have seen. We do not condone the behaviors depicted in these photos. However, there will be no discipline for Elyse based on the behavior evidenced in the photos. None of them depict illegal behavior or cross a line that cannot be uncrossed. Elyse feels very bad about how this attention affects her reputation and that of our organization. We will treat this as a growth opportunity, both for Elyse and for our other contestants, one of whom will soon be Elyse's successor. The lesson will be that if you choose to appear to challenge the boundaries of good taste you better be sure that the environment is safe. Photographs, like words, can be taken out of context, and once a photograph is recorded it is available forever and there is no way to control its distribution. Nobody goes through life without occasionally letting their guard down and acting foolishly. Title holders will be reminded that they are public figures and role models whose lives will be scrutinized, especially by those who take pleasure in exposing imperfections, however slight. Elyse will not be the last young person whose clowning behaviors will give the wrong impression to people who do not know her. We can only work toward ensuring that the attention these pictures have generated will be a cautionary tale for all of the title holders in our organization.

We consider mentoring the young women in our program to be one of our primary responsibilities. It is a difficult lesson for some young people to learn that their fun-loving behavior before friends can be used against them. When trust is violated the pain is deep. We do not yet know which of her friends, or former friends, may have betrayed her by posting these photographs. All we know for certain is that they were posted by someone who is bent on damaging the image of an amazing young woman.

To paraphrase Shakespeare, this seems to be much ado about nothing. Many young people clown around and act silly in private in ways that they would never consider in public arenas. We would hope that they could always trust their friends, but the realities of human nature teach us that trust is hard to come by.

I'm finding it hard to handicap this batch for some reason. There's an abundance of stunning girls for sure and a few are definitely ahead of the pack but I don't see a clear-cut favorite yet. I also feel this is the year we might be in for a completely out-of-left-field winner. I just can't figure out who that is. Anyhoo, here are my pros and cons on the 10 girls I see as the strongest of the bunch so far. I won't include Italy (even though I love her) because I'm biased and I don't wanna jinx her. Even though I love her. Don't wanna jinx. Even though...love.

That said, prelims might change everything. In the meantime...

Venezuela
Pros: She's obviously gorgeous and really marketable and her beauty is also very approachable and relatable. Her personality is quite reminiscent of Alicia Machado, even though we know Dayana is definitely holding onto her panties.
Cons: Is she very outgoing or is she just kind of a ditz? I fear her personality might be concealing a certain degree of immaturity.

Puerto Rico
Pros: No other beauty queen in the recent past has gotten as much media exposure as Ingrid upon winning her title while douched in mace...and everything that followed. She knows for sure how to compete in pageants.
Cons: She's a pageant bot and they got way too plastic surgery-happy on her face. Her seemingly comatose personality is also a question mark which might do her in once she makes Top 5...which she totally will.

USA
Pros: Crystle has the looks, the experience and the maturity on her side especially in a year where the average age of the contestants is about 7 and a half. She's arguably USA's strongest delegate since Shandi.
Cons: She skews a tad older and that might hurt her when a few of the other favorites are in their late teens or very early twenties. And I kinda wish she'd let loose and talk about her panties from time to time.

Mexico
Pros: Great, naturally beautiful face that doesn't need a layer of frosting to look good (paging Albania, please Albania surrender your My Little Pony make-up kit). I think she's the best Mexican since Marile in 1990 (whom I liked way more than Lupita).
Cons: Her body has peculiar proportions with very narrow chest and shoulders and a somewhat heavier bottom section. For the runway, that is – she could otherwise be successfully employed to rescue animals from wells. I'm kidding, she's lovely.

India
Pros: Being from India, the second she opens her mouth Jesus will automatically materialize in front of the judges. Apart from that, she's tall and stunning and she seems to have a solid body to boot.
Cons: She made top 5 in all the special events so far but won none. Is she an also-ran among the favorites? I question her ability to project even though I think she's safe for a spot in the 15.

Australia
Pros: Her look is classic with an unconventional touch, refined with a girl next door quality which I hear is what MUO is looking for as an upgrade from Riyo, your cute toddler-next-door.
Cons: She's no Jen Hawkins. She sounds like she's on helium and I'm afraid she might not be all that interesting. We'll see.

Kosovo
Pros: Zana fits the trend of the debuting country that sends a great delegate and is rewarded with a place in the semis or better (China, Serbia & Montenegro, Albania, Latvia in recent years). Arguably the look of the pageant.
Cons: Is she prepared at all? Her walk alone needs the miracle worker. And this is one pageant where you can't really make it based on looks alone.

Colombia
Pros: Very charming, delicate beauty with a great body to boot. The combination of sweet and sexy has historically worked wonders at this pageant and she's got it in spades. She's also a clear media favorite.
Cons: Like India, Taliana isn't projecting as strongly as she should even though I think she's overall stronger than Simran. Her video interview was one hell of a snooze.

Norway
Pros: She's overall one of the strongest delegates with the body, the face and the attitude of someone who seems bound to advance. A lot of people really, really like her.
Cons: Being European has become somewhat of a disadvantage if only in terms of preparation or lack thereof. She needs to change her gown because it's a copycat of the pink dryer sheet that was Kathrine Sorland’s undoing.

Korea
Pros: I think she's the strongest Asian delegate. She's got the looks and the clothes and she seems very prepared. Ha-Nui last year paved the way and I think Korea is back in the game.
Cons: She's clearly on something. Something that I need to get around as well. But will the judges be too overwhelmed?

Others I'm keeping an eye on: Panama, Estonia (even though she probably eats kittens), T&T, Thailand, Angola, Brazil, Finland (because she's probably Estonia's only friend), Vietnam (where does the pageant take place? Right!).

Press release today, also on EW.com and Hollywood Reporter. Denise Quinones (Miss Universe 2001) will play one of the female leads in Tucker Max's movie. For those with short memories of Everyone's Favorite Patty, Max is the guy that was embroiled in a legal battle with Katy Johnson over his racy account of their relationship.

Darko Entertainment Taps the Cast for Tucker Max's "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell"

LOS ANGELES - Matt Czuchry, Jesse Bradford and Geoff Stults will star in "I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell," it was announced today by Darko Entertainment, who is financing and producing the film. Based on Tucker Max's bestseller, Czuchry will play Tucker Max, which will mark the actor's first starring role in a feature film. Bradford and Stults will play Max's best friends.

Rounding out the cast is Keri Lynn Pratt and Denise Quiñones, who were also announced today as joining the production. The film begins principal photography on location in Shreveport, Louisiana starting July 21.

Bob Gosse ("Niagara, Niagara," "Julie Johnson") directs with Tucker Max and Nils Parker serving as screenwriters adapting from Max's book. The film is produced by Darko's Richard Kelly, Sean McKittrick and Ted Hamm along with Max and his partner Parker's Rudius Films. Max Wong and Karen Firestone of Pinkslip Pictures will also produce along with Aaron Ray of The Collective. Shaun Redick and Ray Mansfield of The Collective are Executive Producers. The Collective is handling the North American rights to the film.
