We are leaving the Best of the Best Nomination Period open throughout the pageant season!!!

When 2009 officially ends, we will accept nominations until January 31, 2010.

Please visit www.tftj.com/forms/BestOf.htm to nominated your favorite contestant in evening gown, active wear, swimsuit, and more. You can also nominate your favorite director, pageant set/stage, supplier, trainer.

YOU CAN nominate yourself. No one will know!!!!

You only need to nominate yourself one time. Voting for on-stage competitions (swimsuit, evening gown, etc) will take place in February 2010.

The earlier the nomination comes in, the more time I have to process them to ensure we start the voting for the On-Stage Awards on time and sort through the testimonials for the Off-Stage awards.

I cannot wait to see your vote for Best of the Best in 2009!!!

Hello! I am a fellow pageant lover from Illinois. This is not a pageant question, but I hope you will help me. I am helping out a friend by driving with her daughter (who just graduated from college and is moving to her new job) from Nashville, TN to Denver, CO. We will be driving across Missouri & Kansas on Interstate 70. We will pretty much be on a mission to get to CO ASAP, but is there something of interest we should stop for along the way?? How about an interesting place to eat? If you were coming to Chicago, I could tell you where to grab the best hot dog and fries! I would appreciate any input you may have. We may be stopping for the night - any hotels of interest near the interstate (or ones to avoid.)

Disclaimer: Spanish is not my first, second or third language. Maybe my fifth.

Miss Venezuela Dos Miles Nueve (or something): We open with credits tastefully swooshing around the Venevision logo, and we learn that Maite Delgado will host for the umpteenth time, a reign about to challenge that of Bert Parks’ Miss America stint. And thank god for that.

The opening thousand-clips-a-second must have been programmed by a TV editor who had an epileptic seizure as a kid during that infamous Pokemon episode. After watching this splenetic opening I needed a sedative myself. I could make out just enough, however, to tell it showcased all the years the pageant took place in this big ol' cow palace – and we’ll just forget about that ugly couple of turn-of-millennium budget-cutting years in the TV studio.

Traditionalists throw their sandalias at the TV as the usual Miss Venezuela rendition of Anthony Newley’s “On a Wonderful Day Like Today” is replaced with something even less generic and colorful – if you thought that was possible. The girls are in deep purple cocktail dresses and strutting in what I can only describe as poodle heels.

As back-up, out comes the surreal spectacle of guest dancers who appear to be from Caracas’ Sinhalese ex-pat community, ready to get their Sabaragamuwa freak on to a disco beat. The cameras generally keep to mid-shot and the contestants look like the most gorgeous collection of women in any pageant ever, but then I remind myself I think that every year and to just hold on a minute.

Maite comes out. She was a semifinalista in this thing 20 or so years ago and somehow looks just about the same. “Amigos, amigos, amigos something.” She intros her co-host Daniel Sarcos who is a shorter, tubbier Jon Lovitz with a hairdo that looks like one of those gross old post office wetting brushes on the counter that was used to moisten your stamps – only gummier. This upsweep will slowly lose its altitude and amplitude over the course of the show.

Then Daniel intros Maite again and she gracias him very much and they go on and on and on while the poor girls are stuck onstage. Then they bring out tonight’s guest queen … er, “invited entertainer” (thanks, Babelfish) ... Boris Izaguirre, who walks forward just like the contenders are trained at Osmel Academy. He’s a big girl but Wikipedia tells me he’s also a big telenovela writer and married his boyfriend in 2006, so at least he’s not a hypocrite like that guy who may be leaving Scientology. But I digress.

Cut – and the girls get to go backstage and throw up one last time before swimsuit during the introduction of tonight's 133 judges. (Clearly they needed an odd number in case of a tie.) They include habitual Miss Venezuela crimes-against-nature dress designers Angel Sanchez and George Withers (sic), Christopher Coleman from New York (who probably learned all the Spanish he needed for this over on Avenue D), and Norelys Rodriguez, who’s absolutely stunning.

Click in the top entry for the rest!

Subject: My Pre-Prelims List

Here's my pre-prelim Top 15, though I'm not sure how much it will change after prelims.

Miss Universe 2009: Czech Republic - I remember seeing this question asked many times on pageant message boards around MU time: "Is there such a thing as an exotic blonde?" Ladies and gentlemen, here you have her. I don't see a single flaw with this woman and I think the judges will be enamored with her.

1st Runner-Up: Belgium - This girl should've been Pageant Central's Face of Miss Universe 2009! Here's another girl who's done everything right (yes, even the dress!), but I think the judges will end up giving the crown to the more statuesque Czech Republic. I'd be elated if Belgium won though.

2nd Runner-Up: Dominican Republic - Up until five minutes ago I had her as the first runner-up, but...I don't know. I know she's considered the winner by many fans, but something doesn't sit right with me about her. I don't thinks he's looked all that strong since arrivals - she actually looks a bit haggard in some photos. She's not as big of a knock-out as I hoped she'd be, but on stage she will be styled to the nines so that could all be moot.

3rd Runner-Up: Venezuela - I'm a little surprised that she doesn't have all that many fans, though it could understandably be because of her sash. But I can't help but like her. She has an extremely versatile look, and I think Venezuela has a realistic chance of having MU's first back-to-back winners.

4th Runner-Up: USA - She is gorgeous enough to warrant a Top 5 spot, no doubt about it! Where I think she will fall flat is the interview portion, so 4RU is the best I can see her doing, which is still a great placement.

Top 10

Great Britain - Honestly, I just couldn't fit her in my Top 5 but she can easily make it that far.

Russia - After flashing everyone during SS, she will be easily propeled into the Top 10. Okay, I'm lying, but I think she's more beautiful than people are giving her credit for. She has a very alluring beauty.

South Africa - Facially, not the prettiest. I know that. But still, I think she will make at least the Top 15.

Netherlands - I thought she was overhyped at first but now I'm starting to understand the hype.

Hungary - If only she were being styled better she'd be in my Top 5. Even if she doesn't wear that horrid pink gown for finals, I can see her wearing something equally horrendous.

Top 15

Albania - She's become my soft spot. Surprisingly, I wasn't too crazy about her before her arrivals but I think she's totally stunning now. She pulls off that tight updo like it's no one's business, and that pink gown is stellar!

Ireland - I wish this stunner was hyped just a tad more.

Guatemala - The must underrated Latina competing this year (Nicaragua is a close second).

Spain - Almost fell off my list because she hasn't been holding my attention beyond what I noticed the first few days, but she can still be up there.

Italy - Facially, among the best this year. From the neck down...not a fan.

For those who dare doubt the seriousness of beauty pageants, behold Singapore, in which the entire world of looking pretty has been rocked by scandal.

It seems Ris Low, who had been crowned Miss Singapore World for 2009, has given up her crown under public pressure after it came out that she has a tendency to steal other people's credit cards and then buy herself lingerie with them. Arguably that's better than buying drugs and goes toward a good cause, but the beauty pageant world will not stand for it.

All told, she scammed nearly $6,000 worth of goods, gleaned from seven credit cards taken from patients at the medical clinic at which she worked.

Hey everyone! I've never posted on here so I'm a little nervous, but I'm in a bit of a pickle and I figured that you all would be the best people for me to turn to. So I competed in my state teen USA pageant last year and did really well, right? I was so excited that I get to compete again this year... until I found out my competition. I'm competing against some really gorgeous girls this year, some of whom I know personally and are truly beautiful people both inside and out. Now I'm really nervous and anxious about this year's pageant, especially because it's so soon and my chances of winning are clearly less this year compared to last. Do you guys have any advice for me? I know I should just stay focused and do my personal best, but do you have any words of wisdom?

Thank you in advance. :)

Photobucket
Miss Virginia 2008, Tara Wheeler got the Miss America and Miss Virginia Organizations to agree to let her shave her head if she raised $500,000 (money went to the St. Baldrick's Foundation, CMN and the Miss Virginia Scholarship Fund). Well, she didn't make her initial deadline, but she continued fundraising and has collected over $30,000. Now that she is no longer Miss Virginia, she is free to shave her head whenever she wants and tonight is the night!!!

If you are in the DC area, you can see it happen live at the Crystal City Sports Pub in Arlington, VA between 6:30 and 8:30. Also, it's not too late to donate (I believe all money donated online goes directly to the St. Baldrick's Foundation, an organization that fights pediatric cancer). Simply follow the link below. You have to admire her dedication!

Proof that, even with their busy schedules, some pageant ladies never miss an opportunity for a quick game of "Got Your Nose!"

And now a quick IndyPoll.....If you were competing in a pageant, and were allowed only ONE person of your choosing to help you with hair & makeup backstage, would you pick a beloved family member.....or your favorite titleholder (and who would that be?)???

If beauty pageants are an industry, Venezuela is its capital. The South American country has produced winners of the Miss Universe contest two years running. But Reuters reports, even the world of tiaras and evening gowns has been compromised by the global economic downturn – and Venezuela’s winning streak may be compromised as a result. The Miss Venezuela Organization, the body responsible for choosing the lovely ladies who compete in these international beauty competitions, has said that they will have to reduce the number of women they groom for the crown from 30 to 20 due to budget cuts. The organization’s so-called "beauty czar," Osmel Sousa has been charged with the enviable task of separating the stunning from the merely pretty. But Sousa is quick to point out that the belt-tightening will not mean fewer dresses and less cosmetic surgery for the chosen girls. Whew! We wouldn’t want any of the contestants to go without their implants. That would be like making Tom Brady play the Super Bowl without a football.

Does anyone know what Miss Distrito Capital's deal was with her onstage question? She received the question, went back to the host, then answered something, then she swatted her hand and all I understood was when the host said "porque (because)" and then she completed her answer...or so I assumed.

VOTE online for Fijian teenager Hosanna Kabakoro for Miss Photogenic in the Miss Idaho Teen USA contest and help her earn a college scholarship. The 16-year-old received a US Congressional Bronze Award last year and was one of two youths named Idaho's Top Youth Volunteer early this year by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a national program that encourages volunteerism. "I am so proud to represent our region as 2010 Miss Magic Valley Teen USA," Ms Kabakoro said. "The Miss USA organisation offers its contestants many opportunities, including providing us a platform to promote community service, so this is a matter close to my heart." One of the ways she could earn a scholarship was through online voting system. People could visit the web site http://www.missidahousa.com choose 'contestants' link, then choose 'Miss TEEN Idaho' link. "If you think I look okay in the photo, would you kindly vote for me," Miss Kabakoro said. The pageant will be held on October 23 and 24 in the US.
