Subject: 25 Years Ago Today.......

Hard to believe 25 years ago today a young Syracuse University student would become the 1st black Miss America and become part of pageant immortality. I will always admire Vanessa on so many levels: In an era where it took multiple tries just to get to Atlantic City, she entered only one local; the way she handled the death threats while tirelessly promoting the MAO during her reign; the way she was able to pick her self up and move on despite the humiliating experience of having to resign and went on to become a very successful recording star and actress – (Not to mention being married to that hunk Rick Fox but I digress). However, I will most admire Vanessa for 25 years after she left Syracuse to become Miss America, she received her college degree. It is for all these reasons that Vanessa will always be for this pageant boy, my Miss America.

Below is the clip of that magical crowning moment………

MISS AMERICA’S OUTSTANDING TEEN PROGRAM ANNOUNCES
NATIONAL WORKSHOP TOUR
MAOT and Dolphin Entertainment partner for a six city workshop series

Orlando, FL- September 24, 2008-- Miss America's Outstanding Teen announced today that for the first time ever, Miss America’s Outstanding Teen, Inc. and Dolphin Entertainment are launching a
nationwide tour of six cities! This unprecedented workshop series is designed to give contestants, their parents and pageant directors an inside look into the MAOT organization and the acting/audition process.

With breakout sessions addressing topics such as on-stage presentation, platform development, preparing for the Entertainment Industry and an in-depth look at the MAOT judging process, this is one workshop you won’t want to miss! From beginner to “pageant pro,” there will be something for everyone!

The workshop series will kick-off November 15th in Columbia, MD at the Sheraton Columbia Town Center. The day will consist of four different break-out sessions for participants.

Sessions will include:
1.Working with the Camera: Participants will study improvisation as a tool to integrate the different styles and skills for acting in front of the camera for media, television, film, and reporting.
2.Preparing for the Entertainment Industry: From the importance of first impressions and presentation to the truth about finding an agent and auditioning, participants will learn how to navigate a path through the confusing world of the entertainment industry.
3. Establishing your Ideal Presentation: Participants will learn how to select and apply
the right modeling, make-up, talent, etiquette techniques and overall
style to best highlight their personal strengths. Whether on or off the
stage, these presentation skills will last a lifetime.
4. Navigate the Interview Room from all sides of the Table: This session
will teach participants everything they need to know to take the mystery
out of the interview process. Overall interview technique, paperwork
completion, platform development and the Children’s Miracle Network will
all be discussed. Participants will also see an actual judges’ ballot in
order to learn the process from all sides of the interview table!

Registration materials will be available on Friday September 26th on the Miss America's Outstanding Teen website. Please visit http://www.maoteen.org/workshop/MAOTDolphinTour.htm for more information.

Dear PCer's. I have dilemma that I could use some help with.

This past MAO season, I acted as business manager for two young ladies. I actively sought them out and volunteered to work with them because I believed they had that special something, and as a coach wanted them to do their best. One was in her last chance to compete so I hoped she would make the top ten. She is a beautiful girl and very talented and bright.

As her business manager and hopefully advisor, I drove an hour to her house each time to meet with her and her mom. I looked at clothing suggestions, spoke to her about hair and make-up and reviewed her talent.

I ended up making part of her talent outfit, totally approved of her gown which was stunning and loaned her two of my swimsuits to choose from for SS.

I did not attend the pageant this year but heard she was phenomenal on stage, so was shocked and sad for her when she didn't make the top ten. I immediately texted her to see if she was okay and she seemed to handle it well.

Well, that was in June. I have contacted her by phone, text, voicemail etc. First to see if she'd like to get together, because I liked the girl and second to have my garments returned. She has not answered any of my requests and I actually called the house phone and spoke to her mom about it, after which, again, I heard nothing.

Now, please understand, as a volunteer and coach I sometimes get my heart broken because I become fond of these girls and after a pageant, they can turn into someone else and disappear from your life. Luckily that is a rarity for me. I love all my girls.

So, what do I do? She has over $300 worth of my merchandise that I could certainly sell. Should I try anything else, or just chalk it up to a bad apple in a basket of beautiful red ones?

Depressed and exhausted

So you all know Meemaw said Teri Utley and Jill Gulseth ruined her life. But, I had some people ruin mine as well. Who ruined yours?

1970s:

1 Karen Morrison: Miss Texas should have won that pageant. To make it worse, Karen looked like a cyclops with a great swim suit figure. But it was her whiny interview, so inspid, that turned me COMPLETELY off! To this day, I hope she does not spawn. ;)

2. Marisol (MU 1970): She ruined Debbie Shelton's life, so she might as well have ruined mine!

3. Mary Therse Friel: Not because I truly hated her -- I din't. But Tracey Goddard derserved that crown, and a mousy girl who does not interview well does not deserve to be Miss USA. In the 80s, she looked awesome!

1980s:

1. Teri Utley: She beat a top 5 full of stunners: Texas, Utah, Ohio and the deservedly Virgina were all prettier, and her time on the back of the truck suggested she was not a Girl Scout as she "sipped" her beer.

2. Barbara Palicios: Another girl I did not hate, but she won is a God awful time machine gown, and as much as I think Christy Fichtner is a piece of work, she deserved that title!

3. Cheryl Prewitt: Okay --- she won that pageant outright. She was stunning, and possibly won every category. I have never seen such a sweep, but that interview scared me. Her leg grew an inch before her? Healers? Speaking in tongues. Sheesh!

1990s:

1. Joyce Giraud: A woman is a woman becuase she is a woman and women should be proud being women because women are women. Nuf said! I am dizzy now! Beautiful? Yes. Next!

2. Karin Hartz: I don't need to elaborate, and Tiffany Tenflede was ROBBED!

3. Dayanna Torres: Nuff sad 2!

200s:

1. Jill Gulseth: I remember that night thinking who was this slow thinking girl that was drunk in heels. Then I saw Meemaw call her the Beast. I have indegestion!

2. Erica Harrold: Okay, so I do not hate her as much as others. She was smart and talented, but her nose crops up in my dreams from time to time.

3. Endia Abrante: Because I am scared!
