Subject: First Runner-Up Hall of Fame: Charter Members

Author:

Date Posted: 21:18:16 06/01/09 Mon

Founder’s Note: I’ve been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm posters have shown for this newly-established Hall of Fame. I’m still scouting locations in Hoopeston, Illinois but, in the meantime, here are the charter members of TFRUHOF:

Patron Saint: Alice Emerick, Miss Texas 1937, 1RU to Miss America, Bette Cooper. Without the shame Alice suffered because there were no first runner-up rules in place, there would be no “in case Miss Thing is unable to fulfill her duties, the first runner-up will take her place.” Without those rules, no Hall of Fame!

First Runner-Ups Who Got To Take the Crown: 1.Suzette Charles, Miss America 1948, successor to Vanessa Williams, who was detroned; 2. Charlotte Sheffield, Miss USA 1957, successor to Leona Gage, who was disqualified.

Group Award: Miss USA’s who were First Runner-up Miss Universe. Each of these contestants has their vociferous fans: Myrna Hansen, Debby Shelton, Amanda Jones, Judie Anderson, Julie Hayek, Christie Fichtner, Carole Gist, Shandi Finnessey.

The “I Wasn’t Supposed To Be Here” Award, given to first runner-ups who got to go to the main show after the original winner decided not to go: 1.Luz Marina Zuluaga, Miss Universe 1958 (originally 1 RU to Miss Columbia); 2. Charlene Dallas, 1RU to Miss America 1967 (originally 1 RU to Miss CA); 3. Helen Salas, 4RU to Miss USA 2007 (originally 1RU to Miss Nevada)

The Best Top Two Ever (MAO Division): Virginia Cha, Miss Maryland 1989, 1RU to Debbye Turner.

The “Wait, she already congratulated me for winning” Award, given to 1RU’s who were congratulated for winning – mistakenly - by the eventual winner: Kathy Baumann, Miss Ohio, 1RU to Pamela Eldred, Miss America 1970; Catherine Lemkau, Miss Iowa, 1RU to Leanza Cornett, Miss America 1993.

First Runner-Up to God’s Representatives. These contestants avoided death by becoming first runner-up to God’s chosen ones: Constance Dorn, 1RU to God’s Chatterbox, Terry Meeuwsen; Tana Kay Carli, 1RU to God’s Miracle Cure, Cheryl Prewitt; Cullen Johnson, 1RU to God’s Winged Angel, Heather Whitestone.

WTF Award – Audience Reaction Division: Jessica Collins, Miss New York, 1RU to Mindy Duncan, Miss Teen USA 1988; Maya Walker, Miss Colorado, 1RU to Gretchen Carlson, Miss America 1989.

WTF Award – Contestant Reaction Division: Sandra Truitt, Miss Illinois, 1RU to Elizabeth Ward, Miss America 1982; Suzette Charles, Miss New Jersey, 1RU to Vanessa Williams, Miss America 1983; Nicole O’Brien, Miss Texas, 1RU to Jillian Parry, Miss Teen USA 1990.

Geographic Division: Countries and States who have provided four 1 RU’s but either no win or only one win for their geographic region. This award is given both to the region and to the runner-ups: (1) Louisiana MAO, Four 1RU’s but no winner: Patricia Brandt, Erika Schwarz, Faith Jenkins; Jennifer Dupont; (2) Columbia Universe, Four 1RU’s and only one winner: Paola Turbay, Paula Betancourt, Carolina Gomez, Taliana Vargas; (3) North Carolina MAO, Four 1RU’s and only one winner: Constance Dorn, Susan Lawrence, Michelle Warren, Kelly Bradshaw.

The “Can’t Stop the Texas Steamroller” Award, given to those five ladies who were first runner-up to the 1980's Texas Quintet: Brenda Denton (the only New Mexico Sash Factor Victim in pageant history), Halle Berry, Chloe Carbrera, Diana Magana, Jill Sheffert.

The “One 1RU, Two Faces” Award to Cullen Johnson, Miss Virginia, 1 RU to Heather Whitestone, Miss America 1995, who after graciously congratulating Heather turned around and whined that MAO’s desire for a handicapped winner was the only reason she was 1RU.

The Only 1RU Oscar Winner: Halle Berry, Miss Ohio, 1RU to Miss USA 1986.

The Only 1RU To Have Body Parts Renamed for her: Leah Laviano, 1RU to Miss USA 2008, and possessor of the "The Lavianos."

Fan Favorites. They are here because they hold a special place in some fans’ hearts. And without the pageant fan, where would pageants – and first runner-ups – be? 1. Claudia Moreno, Miss Venezuela, 1RU to Miss Universe (a); 2. Miriam Quiambao, Miss Philippines, 1RU to Miss Universe, 1999 (b); 3. Lindsey Douglas, Miss Kansas, 1RU to Miss USA 2002; 4. Kelly Anderson, Miss West Virginia, 1RU to Miss USA 1984; 5. Shilah Phillips, Miss Texas, 1RU to Miss America 2007; 6. Jade Smalls, Miss Illinois, 1RU to Miss America 2000; 7. Ronica Riccardello, 1RU to Miss New Jersey MAO 2007.

(a) Also winner of “The Sloppy Seconds Award” because she got to go to Universe because of PPP (Pissy Pageant Politics); (b) Also winner of “The Pick Yourself Up” Award, AKA “I’ve fallen and I did get up” Award because she fell during preliminaries but recovered beautifully. In addition she represented all women “who have fallen both on and off the stage.”

If you could be any titleholder, who would it be and why? I'll say Kethy Manning. Not only to have her hair, but to be able to walk out on a stage wearing a "supersuit" like she did at Miss America(looking totally hot)Of course I would want to wear that gorgeous black velvet gown she wore at USA 1987 with the plunging backline.

Subject: NEW TOPIC - 2009 Pageant Season WTF???? Moment

Author:
Hoochiebabe
[Edit]

Date Posted: 23:11:57 05/20/09 Wed

Meemaw has stated till we have more new topics on the board she will not post a review of Miss USA, and I like many others can not live without hearing her candid, comedic and classic opinions all the time so above is yet another new topic.

My WTF moment of the 2009 Pageant season would have to be Miss Iowa and her advancement and eventual placement as 2nd RU at the Miss America Pageant. From the moment she was called to the top 15 my reaction was WTF??? All i could focus on was her bright purple obnoxious eyeshadow and very pronounced jaw and chin that had a Jay Lleno-esgue quality. Take a drink it will be okay, there is always 1 girl that somehow sneaks into the first cut.

Then came swimsuit...GULP and another GULP- she was obviously the largest girl of the 15 and the most out of shape which was evident by the obvious jiggle in her wiggle. I was certain that she would quickly exit to the clapper section and yet she advances to the top 12. Excuse me bartender I need a shot and make it a double!!!

She emerges in gown in what can only be described as a grey circus tent and to quote Suzanne Sugarbaker she must have bought the fabric from Georgia Tent & Awning. Yards and yards and more yards of 3 different colors of drab grey dull fabric. It gave her no shape and did not slim her already full figure. I have now finished off a double tall crown royal before she is done modeling this depressing frock. Without a doubt the WTF?? dress in what was otherwise a lovely evening gown competition. I thought to myself well even tho she may have miraculously survived swimsuit this is the end of the road. WRONG!! Screw shots and double tall drinks hand the bottle over NOW!!

She advances to the top 10 and I will admit the girl can TAP. Yet she was not perfect, she fell out of several of her turns, and the double split at the end was poorly executed and she almost fell out of the shaky ending pose. Talent was by far her strongest area of competition but I did not think it made up for her utterly weak performances in SS and Gown. I really did not think there was anyway she could advance to the top 7 but she did! Bartender take the empty crown bottle that I have depleted and break it over my head...it would be less painful

In her On stage Interview she gave a plain uneventful and bland yet competent response to the question on whether college should be free in a purple gown to match her repulsive eyeshadow with a hideous stand up collar with rainbow chandelier earrings. Ok so she can string together a sentence or two but this girl is not among the top 7 girls of the 52. Crown royal no longer is numbing the pain fork over the tequila bottle no lime or salt needed.

As I was trying to decide how the rankings would fall all I was confident in was Miss Iowa was a distant 7th as in the Grand Canyon is not that wide. When they announced her as 2nd RU i went to scream WTF i forgot my mouth was full of alcohol that went spewing all over the bar and then I fell off my barstool and what was left of my drink landed on top of me on the floor. Not only had Miss Iowa ruined my entire Miss America viewing experience she made my physically react in a unbecoming way which left me upside down and with damp couture clothing. Anyhow that is my WTF moment of the 2009 pageant season, please all of you share yours it will be a cleansing release for your soul...I know i feel better now

FYI the cleaners did save the frock that was drenched in whiskey!!!

Hey Fellow PC'ers,

I have an extensive collection of national/state pageant videos & haven't collected any new ones in awhile. I am interested in locating some specific state MAO pageants that I am missing from my collection. I have posted on the particular state boards but to no avail so I thought I'd see if any of the PC family could help!

I am looking for the following state pageant vids:

Miss California 98 (winner, Danielle Coney)

Miss Georgia 82 (winner, Bobbie Eakes)
Miss Georgia 97 (winner, Candice Little)
Miss Georgia 98 (winner, April Brinson)
Miss Georgia 99 (winner, Osjha Anderson)

Miss New York 96 (winner, Tammy Harris)
Miss New York 97 (winner, Lisa Esler)
Miss New York 98 (winner, Deanna Herrara)

Miss Oklahoma 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 & 1994 (any of those years)
Miss Oklahoma 96 (winner, Amy Duncan)
Miss Oklahoma 97 (winner, Kelli Masters)
Miss Oklahoma 98 (winner, Julie Payne)

Miss Tennessee 1998 (winner, Heather Heath)
Miss Tennessee 2000 (winner, Beth Hood)

Do any of you have copies of these or know where I can find them? I have national tapes (MAO, USA, Teen USA, Universe) and state (MAO, USA, Teen USA) and would be willing to trade or buy...Please email me at JazzyK116@aol.com if you have info for me!

Eva Longoria Parker on how winning a beauty pageant changed her life:
Pageants are a part of the culture in Texas. In my pageant package, I won a trip to Hollywood to compete in a talent competition. So I went and never came home. I fell in love with Los Angeles where I became an actor. Everything went by very quickly that I didn’t even go home to pack.

Subject: First Runner-up Hall of Fame

Author:
Wayne
[Edit]

Date Posted: 07:10:42 05/30/09 Sat

Pity the poor first runner-up. She's one step away from the crown and forever gets to wonder what she might have done to have won the title. Yes, there are some years (Heather Whitestone's in MAO, for example) where everyone else probably should have gone home and come back the next year to have a chance at winning. But in many cases it's a matter of "coulda, woulda, shoulda."

So I'm establishing the First Runner-Up Hall of Fame and granting charter membership to a cherished few. You are entitled to nominate your favorite first runner-up but I will let you know if your candidate has been granted membership into this exclusive organization. Fortunately for them, it's not just a matter of personality, i.e. we love them and they should have won. Even beyotches will be able to enter. All except one, one from 2009. (She wouldn't accept the honor anyway.)

Charter Members:

1. Alice Emerick, Miss Texas 1937. Most first runner-ups get to hear the words, "If for any reasons Miss Thing cannot fulfill her duties, the first runner-up, etc." Alas, not poor Alice. She stood around waiting for Bette Cooper to show up for the publicity shots. Except Bette never did. And the rules weren't in place. So everyone went home instead of doing the right thing: placing the Miss America crown on Alice's head and allowing her to reign in place of the disgruntled winner.

2. Suzette Charles, MAO 1983. If you're named as first runner-up and then actually get to take over, well, you've got to make the Hall of Fame. Besides, she gave the classic "WTF?" reaction when named first runner-up, the look that says not only "I did NOT plan on coming in second in this thing" but also implies "Kiss my butt" without putting it into words.

3. Charlotte Sheffield, Miss USA 1957. Leona Gage got the headlines but eventually Charlotte got the title but, alas, wasn't allowed to compete in Miss Universe. So, like Suzette, who also assumed the national title, she gets a shot because she got to fulfill (for the most part) every first runner-up's dream.

4. This is a group award: Miss USAs who were first runner-up at Universe. From Myrna Hansen in 1953 to La Shandi in 2004, Miss USA has a long and proud tradition of "almost" becoming Miss Universe. It's a special group and each member of this special sorority has her avid fans, who will go to their grave shouting things like "Julie should have won!" Alas, for fans of this group award, no conspiracy theories have ever been proven!

Another nominations? In your response, please be sure to highlight what about your nominee raises her above the crowd of other first runner-ups. The first runner-up is a fact of pageant life. She must do something to stand above the crowd, as opposed to just pissing off the second runner-up who thought SHE should have won or, at the very least, been first runner-up herself.

June 1: The Day of the Popular Eye

June 1 people can usually be found either in the public eye or observing the latest modes and trends of society. Either way they are taken up with seeing or being seen in a social context.

This does not mean that June 1 people are overly social beings. They may appear extroverted, in rare cases exhibitionistic, but such an external attitude often masks a personality that is isolated and lonely.

Rarely will June 1 people admit to ignorance. They pride themselves on knowing a good deal about a wide cariety of subjects. They have a facility with languages and an aptitude for tasks requiring manual dexterity; those born on this day also know something of people and their needs and wants. Since those born on this day have a feeling for the value of things, they also make excellent shoppers and in general are shrewd at handling money.

STRENGTHS: Visually perceptive, Shrewd, Fun. WEAKNESSES: Temperamental, Distracted, Impatient.

Happy Birthday, Dayana!

The year ahead: TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (JUNE 1)
Your relationships will be refreshed this year. Some of you will form a new business with an old friend. A few of you could marry a former schoolmate. There will be an important development in your career in August. Family influences your choice of location in September -- you could visit or move to a new place then. Pisces and Virgo adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 30, 1, 22, 49 and 18.

Very well-placed sources tells PerezHilton.com exclusively that The Donald is planning on throwing out the clauses in Carrie Prejean's contract that forbid her from making any unauthorized appearances and penning a tell-all book, while still holding her title as Miss California!!!

This coming after Trump clearly stated on Larry King Live that Prejean would be held to her contract!

How is that fair to the other Miss USA state titleholders????

We hear that the organizers for Miss California USA are fuming at the change in Prejean's contract, especially after the beauty queen began publicly endorsing the National Organization of Marriage.

And the man responsible for the deal?

Prejean's lawyer, Charles Limandri, also known as the General Counsel for NOM.

Surprise, surprise!
