Well wonders never end and points continue to be proven! Tonight was Miss Southlake, and many girls refused to enter because they had heard that Ashley Melnick had entered the contest. Ashley, for those that don't know of her, has finished in the top 5 the last 2 years at Miss Texas. STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL EXOTIC VISION on the stage! Above average vocals, body of death, and very well spoken! Tonight, there were 6 contestants that competed for the local title, Ashley one of them. She won swimsuit, another former top 10 at Miss Texas won talent, and yet another girl won interview. Not a clean win for anyone. But many there thought that the pageant would still go in Melnicks favor.
The moral to this story is don't NOT enter a pageant just because someone or a big name is entered! Ashley ended up 1st runner up tonight, and a 2 time returning contestant from Miss Texas that has never broken the top 15 before, won the crown.
So congrats to the new Miss Southlake, Jessika Williams for getting her ticket punched in the first prelim of the season and now has a strong board and lots of time to get prepared for the state pageant!

This is probably a dumb question, but does anyone know what era the Miss USA contestants were emulating in their contestant photos this year? I'm wanting to copy that idea for my halloween costume but I seem to be having a brain malfunction.

Hey ladies and gents.

I just wanted to pop in and give a plug.
I went shoe-shopping the other day and I was shopping for a clear heel-ed shoe that would go well with swimsuit.

I know I know, I can hear some of you groaning from here. But in my state, clear shoes are standard with swimsuit.

But After struggling with the Tan Touch Up shoes, being unsatisfied with Alisha Hill and Jonathan Kayne I want to personally put my endorsement behind Chery'ls winners shoes.

I bought a shoe that looks just like the Johnathan Kayne Charleston but fits like a dream with the perfect moleskin soles. Just if anyone out there was looking for a new shoe and had the trouble i had just wanted to let you know!

Sorry for the ramble. Here's the website

Subject: As usual, I need help! Who better to call on than my friends and pageant experts at Pageant Central? I am now directing/producing the "Class Beauty Pageant" at our local high school. We are making it much like a "USA" style pageant as it is judged on beauty and poise...categories are casual wear and evening gown. We are doing a high fashion runway theme. I already have music picked for casual wear but am in search of music for evening gown. I would like to use something upbeat to go with the theme, however; a majority of these high school girls are newbies to pageants. I am afraid something too fast would confuse them! This high school pageant usually uses the traditional, slow "elevator music" for evening gown. I am tryng to give this pageant a new look and feel! Any suggestions to a modern but more traditional paced compromise in music for evening gown?

The question is rahter old, does the woman make the dress or does the dress make the woman?

For me, Chelsea Cooley is the perfect example of the dress made the woman. I wasn't especially impressed with her before she showed up at USA in this black dress. Perfect!

Shandi Finnessey was the other way around. This dress isn't all that if you ask me. But Shandi made it amazing. We've seen numerous girls use it since and no one has even come close.

Let's hear your examples!

I'm not usually this negative, but the Miss USA 2010 lineup seems like a real snoozefest so far. I honestly don't think any of the state winners are slam dunk contenders for the crown, with the exception of Texas (assuming she gets all glammed up) and maybe Tennessee. New Jersey overlooked Alyssa Campanella, an obvious Miss USA contender, for a tall girl with a nice body and an average face. Now West Virginia has bypassed Andrea Turner in favor of a rather average looking girl. WTH?!?!

I was out of town when Gman posted his wonderful Top 5 Pageant Women of 2009 (http://www.voy.com/208387/71362.html#post for those who'd like to read it again), but rather than bump his out of the archives I thought I'd post my own. Here are my Top 5 Women of Pageantry for 2009:

5) Gona Dragusha, Miss Kosovo 2009 and 2RU at Miss Universe. The name, the hair, the dress! Thank you for reintroducing the Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast at Tiffany's" look to pageants. It was lovely then and it's just as lovely now. She was a lovely surprise at Miss Universe and a surprising favorite among pageant and non-pageant fans alike.

4) Ashlen Batson, Miss Arkansas 2008 and Top 12 at Miss America 2009. Thank you, Ashlen, for attempting to bring sex appeal to Miss America. Yes, your talent would frighten small children, but your sex appeal could turn a gay man straight. You can throw your sash over your shoulder anytime you want, honey. Now please grow your hair back out and cross over to Miss USA.

3) Laura Chukanov, Miss UT USA and 3RU at Miss USA. I was proud to hype this girl (along with New Yorker) before she won Utah and before she became a sensation with Bulgarians and pageant fans at Miss USA. To me she is the perfect pageant contestant - exotic looks, fabulous body, and a thoughtful, interesting person you'd actually like to know. I would LOVE to see Laura represent Bulgaria at Miss Universe one day, but the mere fact that Bulgarians, pageant fans and the MUO want her to as well is testament to her enormous appeal.

2) Lily Wu, Miss Pageant Central 2009. There were many worthy nominees but none more worthy than Lily. She managed to elevate the already high standard set by Heidi Voight and charmed every PCer she met throughout the year. Here's hoping she fulfills her dream of representing Kansas at Miss USA, but win or lose, she's been a beautiful fixture at the top of our board and made Pageant Central very proud.

1) Stefania Fernandez, Miss Universe 2009. The shock of the year. The first back to back winner and one of the most surprising wins in Miss Universe history. Equally surprising was the speed in which pageant fans overcame their shock to applaud the choice. Most fans, including yours truly, barely put her in their Top 15, if that, and virtually no one saw her as a serious threat to win. The ONLY person on this board who saw it coming long before pageant night was Alita Dawson. Stefania turned out to be a wonderful choice and in hindsight should have been an obvious top contender, but I can't remember a more shocking result in the history of Miss Universe.

As many of you know by now, I am unable to continue my committment to organizing the Miss Pageant Central contest. Recently I received three letters expressing interest in continuing it, but the level of committment required to do it (and do it well) is more than most people realize. For three months I spent everyday working on it, recruiting sponsors, soliciting donations for the PC fund, corresponding with judges and nominators, sending confirmations at every step of the contest to sponsors, judges, nominators, the top 5 nominees and winner, anonymizing the essays, organizing and presenting the essays in a way that made them easy and fun to read, sending ballots, ballot reminders and confirmations to the judges, counting the ballots, handling problems that occured during the contest, making all of the announcements on the board and presenting them in a visually appealling way, corresponding with the top 5, and announcing the winner.

And it didn't stop there - I have corresponded with Lily regularly since she won and mediated problems that arose with sponsors who failed to honor their committment.  I also had to mediate a problem that occured during the actual contest with one nominee being accused of fraud. In short, it is a huge undertaking organizing a contest involving a $7,000 prize package, even when that contest is conducted online!

A couple of people have expressed concern that without my involvement, the contest will suffer and it will be harder to generate interest from contestants, sponsors, and donations to the PC fund. There is also a concern that things won't be handled as professionally or with the same attention to detail. But my experience has always been that anytime anyone from this board volunteered to accept responsibility for something, they've always given 100% and exceeded anything I could have possibly imagined or done. I would use Regina Phellange and MLOP as perfect examples.  Regina volunteered to handle the graphics for our board, and MLOP volunteered to create our website.  And both of them have given 100% effort to everything they do, and they did it without me micromanaging them.  So who's to say people won't want to put the same effort into running the MPC contest?

So the purpose of this post is to gauge the level of interest and committment in continuing this contest. We need to know:

1) Do you want the Miss Pageant Central contest to continue?

2) What are you willing to do to make it happen?

If there is sufficient interest and committment, I'm hoping someone will volunteer to act as the contest director and oversee the entire thing, while others volunteer to manage the individual tasks. Last year, for example, Fannie Pack volunteered to manage the PC Fund, purchase items for Lily's care package and distribute money for Lily's early entry fee.

If the contest is going to continue, it will require a real committment from people. Because in order for it to be successful, attention has to be paid to the details. You COULD just go through the motions and follow the minimal instructions, but it wouldn't be nearly as fun nor would it inspire others to participate. Instead every task should be approached with the same level of committment and professionalism that Regina and MLOP bring to our graphics and website.

So first we need to gauge not only the level of interest but the level of committment.  If people really want the contest to continue they'll need to volunteer and commit themselves to managing the various tasks with 100% effort. If there isn't a sufficient level of interest and/or committment, the contest will not go on. So please respond honestly, we need your honest opinions and you will not be criticized for them. One of the three who contacted me recommended we not hold the contest due to his doubts about the board's level of committment. So there are no wrong answers here. We just need to find out whether or not people think the contest is worth continuing and what they're willing to do to make it happen.

I just read this on two different message boards, and have seen mixed comments. Many of us are either directors, been on boards, coaches, and some are state directors. We even have people that read this board that are former national title holders in different systems. So this should be a great classic discussion.

The question put forth was this: A girl is competing in a local competition in the MAO. She apparently competed last year in the state contest. It's now come out that this person has a sex tape that has "leaked out" (love how this wording is put) to the internet. What and how should this be handled? Should it be told to the local director that has a contest coming up and the young lady is competiting in their contest? Should it be told to the state MAO office and let them know about this? OR should she just leave it alone?

Personally, my heart tells me two things. 1) leave it alone, don't get involved, it will come back and bite you in the ass if you aren't careful. Esp. if you can't prove this allegation.
AND FINALLY
2) because I love the MAO so much, personally I would want to say tell the state organization ONLY if you can prove this allegation. Just state the facts, say that there are issues that they should be aware of, and then drop it. Don't persue it any further. State the basics, leave it in the hands of a higher power, and trust they will get to the bottom of it.

Am interested in hearing how you guys will think this one out.
