- As explained on another Voy board, Feispix spend ALL day, often from the time the first dancer is on until the time all of the presentations are over, taking action shots, presentation shots, and studio shots. If you stand near their stall you will hear that everyone wants their own pics NOW, and Feispix try to print them off so that people can carry them away with them. They often don't get to eat at night because it is so late (I know that's the same for dancers, but that's only one day usually!), and I can't see any way they could fit in all the processing and uploading time to post them on their website - even if they had a broadband connection in Killarney. - Interested, but wouldn't have a clue how to start. The only prob I could see is that we do have great tc at the mo, and would hate to loose them. Would need to put out idea amoung the better tc and upcoming ones and get feedback and advice. I feel that our tcs would love to see the end of the hypocrosy, politics and pomp from ID but play the game a bit, 'cos they feel at least they can make small differences whenever they voice gets heard, and if they vote on issues, another small chance. - Yes - but An Comhdhail is different in it's style. I know that in recent years it has changed a lot, but I wouldn't move over for that reason. People also get used to the competition calender - Worlds at Easter etc etc so we would need to have comps a similar time to make the cross over easier for people. - you can't start up an organisation that will rival the standard of CLRG. Its teachers and schools have been developing over years, excellence doesn't happen over night. You would not have the numbers to rival it, not for a very long time. I have just found out that here in Australia they are now banning begginers from wearing wigs. Of course this is throwing people into total turmoil about curling their dd's hair. i for one will leave it natural as it looks really awful curled. existing beginners can still wear their dress (but no wig) but new ones have to wear more simple costumes. does this also happen in the UK and Ireland? -- interested mum, Sat, Jan 27 2007, 10:43:50 [32]

  - I agree however some TC's refuse to let their dancers wear certain types of dresses and insist on specific designers. Don't they realise parents can't afford this. My friend's dd dances at a school like this and she is under extreme pressure to come up with the goods. More focus seems to be on the costumes/make up these days than on the actual dancing itself. Would definitely welcome a look at costs at higher levels as I know 2 families where they eventually gave up as it was getting 2 expensive (especially as one had 2 dd's and the other had 3 dd's).         I am in more than one hat on this one.. We are adacing family, me, 2 dds and a ds, I have my own school although not affiliated with anyone as we do not compete, and I am a dressmaker ... solo dresses are worn IF the girls have one for performances, but other than that , we have a school dress, which I make, that the dancer can hire in six monthly increments - saves on the 'selling because outgrown' phenomenom... the girls love the wigs, and dresses etc, but it is not the focus. You were asking why dancers don't have enough guts to dance in whatever they feel like, but the problem is not fear of losing, it is fear of upsetting a TC and being sidelined or thrown out of your school as a result.         We went with a very inexpensive dress that our TCs told us to resell immediately. Said judges would never look at it. We put a little $ & extra appliques, changed lining & sleeves, had DM cut out the bottom. TCs didn't recognize it but did sideline for while when found out. Qualified for Nationals. - I was grateful to move to a school that allowed wigs. Too much stress to unwind in the morning to find only 1/2 head dried.   - What was being questioned was how someone can place in the top 3 with 4 adjs and then get 9 marks off another....there's always an element of 'not my cup of tea' but these one off odd marks should be questioned and the adj made to substantiate why they gave them....Nothing was said about the winner or anything like that, just a questionable mark in what was otherwise very consistent marking!         Of course FUN has to have a high priority - what's the use of doing anything if it isn't any fun?         This would be our first time at BT, did read some of the past comments from last BTs but not sure which age groups, if any, were mentioned, I don't think anyone was annoyed with any US dancers placing, as that didn't affect UK qualifiers.         I wouldn't recommend any overseas dancer coming to the BNs. It's so badly organised, even if you don't take the corruption into account. But with adjs having so many dancers on their list of 'who to look out for', they won't be giving away marks to anyone else, especially if they are not recognised. Come to the GBs instead! It isn't perfect, but way better run, much less political, (safeguards in place e.g. adjs chosen on the morning, dancers pick unseen numbers immediately before dancing), and you and your dancers will have loads more fun! I know this should be on one of the other ID Boards, but to tell you the truth, I know there would some smart-aleck, and snide remarks to what I am about to write. This is a pretty nice board and I think most of the posters will add an intelligent two cents.

Today I found out just what some of my dance friends spent on new dresses for their dancers. I'm so upset..first of all that THIS is what Irish Dance has come to be--spending just about three thousand on a dress. As a single mother, I realized today that women like me simply cannot afford to keep up with Irish Dance anymore. I cannot afford to buy my daughter a new dress..or rather ANOTHER dress. Shs is an older dancer who went through a slight growth spurt before the Oireachtas. Her dress is short so I have to add a ruffle at the bottom. I would have loved to buy her a new dress, however, I have car payments, auto insurance, rent, cable, water and sewer, telephone, gas and electric, and food and the yearbook and just paid college deposit and gas for the car, and everyday expenses and lessons...there just is not enough money.

All of her dance friends are going to All-Irelands. I had to tell her I simply could not afford to allow her to go to A-I's this year. I feel like S*it. Total s*it. Why has it come to the point of having to go overseas to "be seen"? How can everyone afford airfare? Is it those who have a two-income household who are now the Irish Dance elite?

Go look at the price of used dresses--UPWARDS from %1,500.00. I've seen ads saying dresses was used a couple of times, when I've seen advertised dresses at every feis during the past two years? Greed? Robbing Peter to pay Paul?

Who is to blame? Is it the parents? The teachers? The adjudicators?

What happens when dd gets "dress to short" as comment? Do I go up to judge and say "Hey. I have NO MONEY FOR A NEW DRESS"

Then a "new wig" is unvieled. It is a wig that is relatively straight with curl at the end. What kind of garbage is that? Another ploy for money. When you buy a wig like that (I think it is anabel)it is time to just dance with regular hair.

Well, misery loves company. Please reassure me that I am not the only one out here.

- i agree and i think many people are to blame for this happening, no one particular body of people are soley to blame. teachers want their girls to be noticed. the girls want to be noticed, the mums want their dd to be noticed, so and so gets a new wig so her friend does. and so on it goes. its the jones and the browns out doing each other and it gets worse and worse. the dressmakers charge us more for fancier dresses and we happily (or not!) pay them as we feel we have no choice. so we are to blame too. its a vicious circle and i guess the only people who can contain it to a degree are the people who run the committees ie AIDA in australia. not whining about it or griping just commenting. Reading tons of negitive stuff about British Nationals, don't know whether to bother or not. If we do go it would be our first time at BT, and could really do with advice. Was what I read about last year the normal carry on. Were all the judges playing politics or were any of them fair, and will any of them be judging this years BTs. - I don't think the whole of the BN was corrupt last year but there were about 5 championship wins that raised an uproar during award ceremonies. I would not go back just based on principle but does not mean your dancer will be shafted. Hopefully the organizers care and heard the audience response last year. - My experience was that the winner that those of us in the audience saw as the true winner alwasys got a 4th or 5th place from one AD to make sure that they would not win.
