In reply to: Danielle Savinovich 's message, "Looking for advice from former or current Miss Universe/Miss USA/Teen USA winners and contestants" on 20:20:59 07/20/15 Mon

Danielle, contact your state directors Debbie Miller and Cindy Provost office (352-404-8788) to ask questions (have all your questions on paper before calling) ask about their competiton packet or do they have a 2015 packet if their 2016 packet is not ready, and ask for their videographer name and telephone number for you to order their 2015 or previous years state preliminary and final night dvd for New York.

You can also go on YouTube and look at The Miss Teen USA national pageant going back to1984. You can see how the format has changed drastically, BUT the competition criteria has not changed a bit (interview, swimsuit, evening gown). Interview make sure you read up on current events locally and national news, have your dad not your friends or an adult that will work with you on eye contact and your delivery. YouTube The National American Miss Interview Competition Review video, thier process is similar and a wonderful example of the state Miss Teen USA pageant interview process.

You have less than five months to prep for this pageant, starting with your sponsorship. Your wardrobe, your parents hotel stay and tickets to preliminary and final night. When you raise your sponsorship money you can exceed the requested amount that your state headquarters request. For example if your sponsorship is 1200 you can raise 2000 or more; you send your requested sponsorship to your state headquarters (your sponsorship covers food, hotel stay and transport from hotel to the performing arts center where the show takes place and to other necessities for you and the rest of the contestants to have an outstanding experience and to prep the state winner for nationals). You have raised an additional 1000, take the additional money and purchase your competition wear, swimsuit, shoes, interview wear, evening gown and your family tickets to see you compete and their hotel stay. So raise as much as you can until you leave for the state pageant BUT have your state sponsorship money in on time. You can make this happen.

If this is your very first pageant ever, have your questions ready, contact your state headquarters with your questions, purchase NY Teen USA preliminary and final night DVD. If you are unable to purchase the DVDs review the national Teen USA pageants on YouTube very helpful on the national level. Also review the 2013 Miss Teen USA national preliminary pageant, Miss Texas Teen USA preliminary state pageant, the Miss FL Teen USA preliminary pageant, the Miss MO USA / Teen USA pageant is very helpful. The Miss Teen USA national pageant from 1984-2007 were televised, you can view why interview is extremely important. 1984-1997 were intense when it came to onstage interviews, 1998-2007 the interview format changed, 2008-2014 it changed again.

Besides interview, swimsuit is visible to everything, you can't hide flaws. I do not mean birthmarks, accident scares, birth defects or paralyses. Girls with disabilities have captured their state crown. What I am talking about is selecting shoes you can walk gracefully in with no hunching over and no walking like a mummy. You do not have to have wear platforms or 6 inch heels, you can drop down to 3 or 4 inch heels. Practice walking around your house in 3 or 4 inch heels maybe 15 minutes a day for one month have someone record your walk the 1st day of the month and the end of the month, the next month do 30 minutes everyday, have someone record the beginning of the month and the end of the month; repeat this practice and increase by 15 minutes until you are gliding across the floor flawlessly. Head high and walk flawlessly. Pick a swimsuit that will flatter your body type, if you have a bulging stomach do not wear a two piece wear a flattering one piece. Go to a swimsuit shop and try on suits, you do not have to purchase the sales clerk can assist you and purchase something off the rack. You want to look your best swimsuit this is the first or second phase of competition. No jewelry during swimsuit competition. Again when in doubt check national preliminary or finals in teen, no one is wearing jewelry. The miss division they will wear chandelier earrings and a matching bracelet not bracelets. Remember you're aiming to progress into the semifinals on final night, progress from semifinals to top five and win the crown to go to nationals. Pilates, yoga, light free weights, walking or running will couture and tone your body start now! You do not want to bulk your body you want to couture your frame. When in doubt, reference bs k to the teen USA preliminary national pageant. The reason why I continue to reference bsck to nationals those are the teens that have won their state and moved on to nationals. At nationals the judges are picking the best from the best. Tone and practice your walk.

Interview, practice, practice, practice. Join Toastmasters in your area, toastmasters will assist you with projection and delivery. 99.99% questions are about you, your views on the topic the judge ask you. The topic could be the school clubs you are in, your favorite subject, teacher, hobbies, sports, books. Whatever you put on the questionnaire about yourself is what the judges will ask you 99.99% of the time. It might be a panel interview or one on one interview. The judges sitting at one long table with you standing behind a podium or you will go table to table have a one on one with each judge. The judges are just as nervous as you are believe me. You are being scored on your answer and delivery, sit / stand straight and look the judge in their eyes that's asking you the question. The miss mo teen / miss mo USA has a YouTube video that explains their procedure to you that is the same at all state pageants.

Evening gown again less is best and refer to miss teen USA 2014 preliminary or the national pageants. Your gown should reflect your personality, remember you're teen not sexy sex kitten miss. Your gown selection should reflect your age. If you select black select teen appropriate black, have your hair with light make-up to reflect teen. Pick the gown that reflects your body type, screams teen with a hint of sophistication. Our Teen USA 2014 in my opinion was borderline miss but she won. Your gown does not have to be expensive several gowns were worn at nationals that cost less than 50.00. Charlotte Lopez Miss teen USA 1993 national gown was $37.00 off the clearance rack. It's how you wear it, not the gown wearing you. You can also rent a gown from "Rent the Runway" , or go on Etsy and look at ball gown skirts for 90.00 to 180.00 and purchase a beautiful top that will reflect good on stage that will compliment the ball gown skirt, or look at full gowns. Pick your evening wear wisely. Evening gown shoes should be clear or cheap white shoes dyed the color of your gown or the hem of your gown.

Swimsuit shoes should be taupe shoes, clear shoes, or dyed the color of your swimsuit.

Interview outfit should be a suit, skirt and nice top, nice pants and a nice top, or dress. Some of the girls will wear the same shoes throughout the entire competition. Clear shoes or taupe shoes.

When in doubt reference back to YouTube videos. 1990-1993 Miss Teen USA national pageant before state introduction will give you an idea of interview attire.

Have fun with the preparation. Keep a notebook of your progress and do not give up young lady. My daughters competed, we experience nationals both in teen and miss. Using my IPad so excuse the grammar and punctuation.

Call Miss New York Teen USA headquarters; have your question written down before you call; get the videographer name and number to purchase last years NY Teen USA; if the DVDs are costly reference back to YouTube with your parents help; it does not matter the year of the pageant interview, swimsuit and evening gown remain the same. The format of the pageant has changed. The early years are fun to watch 1984-2000. 2000-2007, 2008 to present; raising the sponsorship money; focusing on toning your body; swimsuit shopping one piece or two piece complementing your body, evening gown shopping, go to bridal salons, dept stores, prom shops, Rent the Runway.com gowns, Etsy.com, and do not be shy to look at the clearance rack at the bridal, gown, dept stores; interview outfit; makeup do not over do it, keep in mind you will be on stage with stage lights therefore not to heavy but not to light; practice walking in heels, practice your interview skills, although the interview will be about you make sure you keep up with current events because if you are in top five the question will be about current events, so be prepared.

Keep us posted will check back to see if you need additional help.

Dani, following up, it's impressive that you have a voice regarding current events but your state director will scan social media for inappropriate pictures, view points made therefore remove all inappropriate materials that might comeback and haunt you later. Girls have been dethroned at the age of 15, 16, 17 it happens; the first runner up replaced the state winner.

Social media questions should be on your question list when you contact NY state headquarters.

Remember you can articulate without profanity. Your state is looking for a representative that is smart, savvy, poise, quick on their toes when a microphone and television camera is shoved in their face.

Look at the newscasters they have to be diplomatic, tactful when speaking. I am not saying to suppress your views but becareful of your delivery.
