"Sperm are fast and as cute as tadpoles. They have chubby teardrop heads and stylish, tapering tails, and they glide, slither, bumble and do figure-eights. So while a father may not be entitled to take the same pride in his sperm as he does in his kids, its fair to celebrate the single-minded cellular commas that helped give those children their start."

Got an endearing text message today that greeted all motherfuckers, which of course all fathers are. No one though likes to think of their own parents having sex, but face it: that's what happened.

What might be less torturous and more interesting to dwell on on Fathers' Day are the mechanics of fatherhood and those indispensable ingredients for procreation, sperm.

Actually, with the spread of sperm banks and the rise of female income, fathers may one day become dispensable. But sperm (singular and plural are the same)... they're probably here to stay. Yet maybe not: I read a scary book years ago called The Stolen Future about the threats that all the chemicals in our environment are posing to the sperm counts of mammals and even to the penis size of a wide variety of animals, including crocodiles.
