JAKARTA, Aug. 10 (AP) - (Kyodo)ŚMuslims protested as Miss Universe 2007, Riyo Mori from Japan, arrived in an Indonesian city Friday, calling her "a symbol of universal immorality," a Jakarta-based private radio station reported.
According to the Elshinta radio station, about 50 Muslims staged the protest in front of Savoy Homann Hotel in the West Java provincial capital of Bandung, where Mori is staying.

The protesters carried posters saying, "Miss Universe, Go to Hell!" and "Free Indonesia from Pornography!"

Syaiful Abdullah, chairman of the Bandung branch of the hard-line Muslim organization Islamic Defenders' Front, said beauty should not been exploited because that would be "immoral and sinful."

In 1990s, Indonesia, a predominantly Muslim nation, banned women from participating in a Miss Universe pageant on grounds that the pageant's swimsuit contest is not in line with Islamic values.

Despite the ban, the Miss Indonesia organizing committee has been sending the country's beauty queens to the pageant since 2005 without being punished by the government of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

Since Aug. 2, Mori has been in Indonesia on a 10-day visit arranged by the Miss Universe Organization and the Miss Indonesia organizing committee for charity activity.
