I was thinking about how Riyo Mori won Miss Universe (she was not the strongest or the fittest lady that night) and aside from Ines Legron's (Miss Japan National Director) connections with Paula Shugart some people think Riyo's swimsuit walk set her apart from the other delegates because it showed spark and personality. Many fans believe this is what won Riyo the crown because the final question round was the weakest point of the competition.
(Riyo Mori)
This got me thinking. In 2004, Jennifer Hawkins had a very exaggerated walk in the swimsuit round and she won the competition! Although her presentation in this round got mixed reactions from fans, most people agreed that her distinctive walk helped her edge out the other ladies that night because the Top 5 questions/answers were all pretty weak.
(Jennifer Hawkins)
However, I then remembered Miss Universe 2005 when Elena Ralph (Miss Israel) was last to present in her swimsuit in the Top 10. Of all the ladies (aside from Puerto Rico who had a very edgy and diva-like presentation) Elena showed the most personality, charm, charisma and spunk. However, she placed 6th out of the Top 10 and just missed the Top 5 by one spot.
(Elena Ralph)
So why did the walks equate to victory for Jennifer (Australia) and Riyo (Japan) but not Elena (Israel)?
Perhaps Australia and Japan as nations are seen as "safe" investments to MUO. Who knows? But all I can say is that there was some bias there.
How does this tie in with Miss Egypt?
Well, I've read posts talking about how Ehsan's presentations were on the demure side but I truly feel that even if she had come out with an exaggerated walk and a few hair tosses she would not have gotten any further in the competition because Miss Egypt will only place in the semi-finals IF and only IF MUO WANTS HER THERE. Face2Face has sent a variety of Miss Egypts to Miss Universe. All were gorgeous in their own way and had different personalities. Some were able to get more international exposure than others through the web (like Ehsan with her photogenic qualities and her first evening gown and Heba El-Sisy who is the only Miss Egypt to be in Global Beauties' Top 15). But when it was all said and done, not a single semi-finalist.
Some may say that Miss Egypts are left out due to politics. Others can argue that Miss Egypts don't have the proper styling when they are at the event. But anyone can come up with any reason. Facts are facts and Miss Egypt has been completely shut out for 19 years and is one of only a handful of countries who have never cracked the semis at Miss Universe.
I think the Middle East is no longer regonized as a region in "Miss Universe". The last Middle Eastern beauty (who was not a Miss Israel) was the exotic Julide Ates, Miss Turkey who placed 9th. Since then (17 years ago) no Miss Egypts or Lebanons have placed in the semi-finals. The last Miss Lebanon to place in the semis at Miss Universe was 34 years ago in 1973!
(Miss Tukey 1990 is second from the right)
This also comes down to another topic. Is the point of sending Miss Egypt to Miss Universe to place in the semis or TO WIN? I think back in the 70s, 80s and 90s being a semi-finalist had huge prestige because you got a lot of airtime and got a chance to compete in all three competitions (swimsuit, interview and evening gown). Now being a semi-finalist doesn't even have that much prestige attached to it. Someone who placed 13th at Miss Universe out of the Top 15 can only say, "Well, I got to walk in my swimsuit for 20 seconds and that's it."
I think if spending tons of money on the Miss Universe franchise fee is being done then WINNING should be the ultimate goal. However, sadly to say, gone are the days when Georgina Risk won wearing sexy harem pants or even when a Miss Israel could take the crown.
(Georgina Rizk)
I am not trying to dismay Face2Face from sending Miss Egypts to Miss Universe or any other pageant. Face2Face is doing a great job with their ladies and they have been putting so much work and effort into their company, which shows. This is merely a topic of discussion and it would be interesting to see people's opinions.
So, my final questions are:
1. Is being a semi-finalist enough?
2. Do you think a Middle Eastern beauty will ever win Miss Universe?
3. Is there a return on the investment of spending thousands of dollars to send a Middle Eastern beauty to Miss Universe?

- well a very interesting post, there are so many issues I would like to comment about, but lets just answer your questions. I think MUO has gotten us to the point that if we just placed we will be extremely happy! I mean comeon! we sure did great with some of the ladies and still they did not place. I agree that Miss Egypt preparation is not ebough at all! but still we deserved the spot once or twice. I remember when we really worked on two of our representatives, Arwa Gouda and Meriam George to ME, I remember Yousif Sepahi telling me that he is preparing them to be winners not to be semi-finalists! I do not think MUO is ready for a Middle Eastern Miss Universe! This shows how afraid they are, lol, well MW did it 5 years ago when Miss Yurkey won the Miss World crown! I d not know if there is any return on the investment, I only know that the national pageant is the event that generates the cash and thats it! (NT) -- fan-man, 07:10:24 06/09/07 Sat
- elena ralph placed 9th not 6th. (NT) -- ahmad, 17:43:42 06/09/07 Sat
- 1) semi-finalist is enough if she isn't more beautiful than the winner 2)a middle eastern beauty will win someday, when the donald want's to make a political statement or the winning country has been in a favorable light with western powers 3) there is a return if the girl becomes a favorite (like miss greece this year) or a semi-finalist. other than that there is really no return but think of it as a paid vacation for the girl sent there as a prize for winning, or think of it as if you sent 5 girls and only 1 makes it its still good. (hope this makes sense) (NT) -- -halah-, 01:45:21 06/11/07 Mon
- it's not about the relations between egypt and usa, it's about that donald trump hates the middle east like many americans, even if there is a good relation between us and usa, u didn't ask urself that israel had many semis, but why they didn't have a winner or a top five finalists uptil now since the 1970s, also lebanon didnt place since the 70s, egypt never placed at all, turkey since the 80s, cyprus never placed , and the bad relations with france made her never place for long, also the bad relations with venezuela made her never win since 1996, and i think mexico would be the last time to place, think about all of that (NT) -- Elmimo, 12:39:03 06/11/07 Mon
