Subject: The US is Losing its Grip on South America

Once seen as monolithic block of basket-case economies dependent on U.S. support, Latin American countries are coveted investment destinations with sophisticated financial systems that have innovated in areas ranging from energy to aviation.

Chinese companies eager to pump oil, harvest soy and build badly needed infrastructure are showering them with offers of investment and financing.

With the U.S. economy still struggling to stay above water and foreign aid budgets seen dwindling, Washington has fewer sticks to brandish and fewer carrots to offer.

Righties would assign blame to Obama, but America's true follies have been allowing unbalanced trade with China, investing in the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, and disinvesting in US manufacturing. America has been hollowed out while enriching the rest of the world and our clout is no longer recognized or even wanted.

If we can bring China online, I don't see where Cuba's politics are any worse. Its just personal.

As for maintaining a world wide illegal drug embargo, its days are numbered. Our exported drug war cancer is eating away the good people of many nations.

It is time to eat some Humble Pie.
