Granted some pageants have shorts and t shirts etc.
Miss Tammy used to do this however between 1) people's desire to be photographed in something more dressy if they won and 2) trying to keep the cost down of the pageant, by not including a t- shirt or requiring a purchase of 1 she switched it back to crowning attire.
Crowning attire can be your formal dress, or if your formal dress is heavy,cumbersome or uncomfortable to sit in, or one you do not want to be in other then competing then you can choose crowning attire.
Crowning attire may be another cute little dress, in older girls may be a cocktail dress or I have even seen dressy little pants outfits
The key you want it still to be dressy it just does not need to be as glitzy as some of the dresses you see in formal wear
