For an interview with a 7-9 yr old is a dress with a matching hat appropriate? The hat isnt very big. It is fairly dressy - like an easter dress. I was wondering more on the hat--it doesnt hide her face or her hair--would judges be okay with it do you think?

Thanks so much!

I called Karon Shea's agency in Mass to ask about the Hawaiian Tropic pageants - whether they were still being done or not - she will be having one in the fall--I should be receiving some information on it & once I do I will pass it on here for any interested in going. It will be held in Maine but they arent sure where. Last year it was Portland.

What do you do to shape up before a pageant? How much cardio vs. weights do you do? Do you have a trainer or do you do it on your own? Do you follow plans like South Beach or Atkins. What works?!

I have noticed at some pageants for the photo portion (most photogenic, front/back cover models etc that some mothers or contestants enter SO many photos. I read somewhere (here maybe?) that a contestant should enter no more than two photos for each division--is that true? I wonder if judges look at the same person over & over for the same group & wonder why they enter so many. I wonder if they would be less likely to choose a photo if that person enters many of them? Anyone have any thoughts on this? If you have judged before, what is your thought on this? How many photos should one enter in the same group?

The GREAT NEWS is that NES is holding state Pre-lims and is coming to MAINE!!
The new NES national will be the first w/e in November , the prizes are phenomenal, including cash, custom crowns and age appropriate gifts.

Looking over all the pageant dresses in the attempts to buy something I cant seem to decide between the long gowns & the short glitzy gowns. I know when they get into the older divisions I have never seen the short gowns but when they are in the little miss 7-9 age division I have seen both. More long though. Does it really matter whether it is short or long? It is driving me nuts trying to decide! I have seen some gorgeous short ones but at age 8 & 9 the little white Mary Jane shoes with the ruffly socks almost seem too young looking.

PLEASE HELP ME DECIDE BEFORE I LOOSE MY MARBLES!! lol

Attention to all that wish to post banners and adds:

Starting now....Big huge banners and adds will be deleted.

ALL ADDS AND BANNERS MUST BE NO LARGER THAN 500KB.
Plus...There will only be 1 banner/add allowed per post.

The response I have received over the past week has let me know that the big huge adds are annoying to most of you and interferes the flow of this board....

I will allow the adds that are currently here to stay as I see there is some good banter going on and do not want to delete all that information.

If you would like to post a banner or add here...That is fine..Just don't make it so big and I will allow it to stay....Anything larger than 800kb is to much.

THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING AND YOUR COOPERATION.

Please contact me with any questions or concerns about this post.

Thank you,

I had to post this! I was looking for a pair of shoes for Taylor's new dress. Since it is keylime with diamonds & silverish looking glitter I wanted something to match--of course I couldnt find green ones & black wouldnt match--I did find some white ones but I didnt really think they went very well with the dress--even though you might not even be able to see them. I stopped into the Family Dollar store this afternoon after I met with a client to see what Easter goodies I could find & right as I was heading to the register I saw a pair of shoes--open toe sandals with a little wedge heel--they were clear with a silver design on the front! I have seen alot of girls at pageants wear the clear heels but have never been able to find them. I found her size & only paid $4 for them! What a steal! They look adorable with the dress & Taylor loved them & said the were really comfortable!! Talk about saving some money!!

I have heard through the grapevine that the numbers are lower then usually for this system. Why..I don't know after looking at the website information http://www.angelfire.com/me4/mainegourmet/page29.html it looks like a great pageant for the state of maine. The crowns she has picked out are beautiful, the prizes are awsome, the age groups are good, as is the catagories, and the prices are right. The prices are less then some of the other maine pageants. Please get the word out that this pageant is next month...it is honest and fair. It is a good starter pageant, & good for the girl who has done several pageants. Please come join in the fun May 5/6 in Auburn!

This appears to be quite legite...if any queens (past or present) could send an autographed pic asap (to be rec'd before April 13th), I think it would be great...
_______________________________________________________

I need your help!

I have been asked to perform a benefit concert in Martinsburg, WV on April 15th. It's being held to raise money for an eight year old little girl named Katelyn Sherrard with a Brain Stem Tumor. Her wish was to have a real country singer from Nashville come sing some of her favorite songs at her Fun Day Event. I just couldn't say no to that! She is the cutest little girl! She loves pink, princess stuff, butterflies, lip gloss and lipstick! Someone has even started a lip gloss and lipstick drive for her! (And from what I'm being told, it's going really well!) Katelyn also really wants to meet a real princess (Or queen) too! She's known as "Princess Katelyn"! Gotta love that! So, I had the idea of making her "Princess for the Day" while I'm there. I'm donating a tiara and lots of Princess gifts to help make her day special!

What I'm trying to do...In VERY SHORT TIME is to see how many autographed pictures from reigning queens,
as well as any cards, princess gifts, lip gloss, and lip sticks that we can all get together for her before I leave to let her know that there are people that wish her well! I know that it would just thrill her to death!

I thought of you because I knew that you wouldn't let me down because you have a big heart too! Can you PLEASE help me get as many queens that you know to also do the same. And send me anything that you have
collected ASAP!

It all HAS to be to me NO LATER THAN Friday April 13th! I know that it's last minute, but it's worth it!

There have been many occasions when a person has looked at my daughters pageant photos with the group of "winners" pictured. Almost every time someone has pointed out one or two of the contestants (different ones) and said they were surprised they were in a beauty pageant because they didnt "look" the part. Meaning their looks werent what they thought someone in a beauty pageant should look like. So my question is, it is called a beauty pageant so should only kids/teens/adults that are beautiful/pretty/attractive enter one?

We had to extend the deadline until the 15th, but it looks like we've got as many as last year. (hooray!)

Mini ~ 3
Little ~ 5
Junior ~ 4
Teen ~ 8
Ms. ~ 3

Unfortunately, we did have to take the 10 year olds out of Little Miss and swing them up to Junior Miss with the one 11 year old! But, I think it'll be a good pageant!!! We've got some returning from last year as well as some new faces--I'm excited

I am proud to announce that I just got back from taping the Best of the Best Reality TV Show in Las Vegas and made it into the top ten!!

The show was about 20 photographers and 20 models going head to head competing against each other to turn in the best images....Us as photographers had to hand in 2 of our best images of each model equaling 40 images total..We then were judged by a panel of professionals in the business to move on to the next round...

They then narrowed the field of photographers down to 10 which go to Atlanta in June for the final announcement on who will be the BEST OF THE BEST....
The Tv show was produced by the MAVERICK NETORK which is like SPIKE TV....I don't think anyone up here in New England will even be able to see the show which is a bummer because it is a new network....

They did however tell me that I will receive a dvd of the show.....

I was the only one from New England to compete and did my best to represent the East Coast...Talk about alot of pressure!! lol....

It's kind of funny because as they were announcing our names I can honestly say that I now know what it feels like to be in a pageant!!...Nerve racking to say the least!!!...I just held my breath as each photographers name was called off...After the 5th photographer was called I could feel my heart racing a mile a minute wondering if I even made it....

Well...Like I said..I am proud to say that yours truly will be going to Atlanta in June representing the east coast!!!

Wish me luck and thank you for your support!!

I was wondering if any of the "pro's" here could tell some of us who are newer to the pageant world what the judges look for in the print & cover models & photogenic categories? What size photos are the best--3X5, 5x7 or 8x10's. Does it matter if they are serious or smiling? Are professional pictures a better choice than taken at home ones?

I also wondered if it was wise to stay away from previous pageant pictures--like photos with crowns on their heads?

I saw on the Eastern Maine pageant website forum that the Mini Miss (ages 5 to 7) and Junior Miss (ages 11 to 13) look like they'll be the smallest groups this year. So far, for Little (ages 8 to 10), there will be at least 6 contestants, for Teen (ages 14 to 17), there should be at least 5. There is also a Ms. division for 18+ (Married and Single women both). The pageant is on Saturday, April 28, in Baileyville, which for those of you not from Washington County, is about 1 1/2 hours east of Bangor (take Route 9)or a little less than 2 hours south of Houlton on Route 1.

If you are interested in entering, email Jayna at easternmaine@hotmail.com ASAP because the official deadline is this week. Entry is $75, and she offers a sibling discount.

Judging Information:
Interview ~ 1/3
response, personality, appearance, posture, expression
On-stage Self-Introduction ~ 1/3
30 to 60 seconds on contestant's choice (e.g., hobbies, school, family, etc.)
speaking ability, poise, eye contact, confidence, smile
Formal Wear ~ 1/3
poise, eye contact, confidence, smile

Optional Competitions, $25 each:
Talent (enforced time limit of three minutes)
Modeling (enforced time limit of one minute)
Photogenic (one photo)

Contestants must be from or go to school in Aroostook, Hancock, Penobscot, Piscataquis, or Washington County, Maine. Jayna and her sister Dawn run a great pageant!

I have a question, that isn't necessarily pageant related... at least not directly. Eva has expressed interest in volunteering. She heard some of the girls on the USA pageant talking about it, and she has said she'd like to find something. But I am wondering what would be good for an 8 year old. I would imagine that most places have age requirements. She mentioned she would like to read to sick kids, maybe at the hospital. But when I checked their website, it appears they want kids 14 and up. Does anyone else have any other ideas? She is extremely compassionate, and really would like to help other kids, but I guess I just don't have a broad enough imagination. So I just thought I'd check. She cut her hair for Locks of Love when she was 6, and is growing it out again for them. But obviously, that isn't something she can do on a regular basis! There is not a Brownie troop here, they went by the wayside, so that is out as an option. Thanks!

Stewart you have done a wonderful job with this board and I have gained a lot of insight on pageants. I am not going to be posting here any longer because I am tired of the negative comments directed at the people who helped build this board with their questions & comments & even advice. I know it is coming from the other board & you have done all you can to keep it at bay. Unfortunately you cannot be here 24/7 & some of those rude posts come through & stay for a while--thus causing loss of tempers & angry words from people who normally wouldn't cause any problems or say anything negative.
I am afraid that if this continues than it will work against us at some of the New England pageants.
You know who I am because you have the capability to see where the posts are coming from. I want to personally thank you for putting this board together. It is a great help to some who still have the desire to learn about photography & pageants and it is a wonderful board for information and advice. Thank you so much! Take Care!

If I ask a question that I have asked before & I ask it again, just maybe it wasnt the same question--maybe I forgot it or maybe didnt get a chance to see if. Is that SO wrong? I have actually been emailed by people to ask me if I will ask a question here because they are afraid they will look stupid or be bashed. Now that is wrong! What is with some people--are you bored or just miserable? Why bother to post something if you dont have something nice to say? Why not use your name when you post? Because you dont have the gonads to let everyone know who you are thats why.

If you dont like when or what or why I post than thats fine with me--but keep it to yourself---what is the point of letting me know--it certainly wont keep me from posting here.

Stewart-I think it is a good idea to start putting the names down of anyone who posts without a name when they post something negative or nasty. Why not-that will definitely keep the wrong people from saying the wrong thing.

who choose to post negative posts but wont use their names--this will keep people away who have nothing but negative things to say. If they know you will tell their name than I bet they wont choose to post any longer.

This was a great pageant. The queens won a trip to go on to nationals in Nashville, plus scholarships were given out not just to queens. It seemed very fair and every contestant appeared to be so comfortable on stage. I believe the day before the pageant, the pageant director, Sharon Pelletier (who has a long list of pageant titles herself, including Miss Maine and Miss Maine Nat'l Teenager), helped all of the girls by giving them tips and suggestions for not just this pageant, but others they may enter in the future.

I don't know why more girls don't enter the Miss Maine National Teenager Pageant. The scholarships are unbelievable! Back in the 80s, by sister entered, and although she did not win the queen title, she won a citzenship award, giving her a $10,000 scholarship to Eckerd College, a private college in Florida. From there, she was able to spend time studying abroad in London, England! The citizenship award is still given out today! This pageant just has so much to offer, more than just a sash and crown!

You can learn more about this pageant and contact the director through the website at www.menationalteenager.com.

If you're looking for other pageants, too, Sharon's mom does the Miss New Engand American Pageant right here in Maine. It's being held in the fall. Divisions are Petite (4-7), Pre-Teen (8-12), Teen (13-16), and Miss (17-27). My neice was a queen of this pageant around 2000 and has a blast! Contact Theresa Pelletier at 728-6526 for more info., or email newenglandamerican@yahoo.com.
