Subject: A Cry for CHANGE

I've spoken to several Contestants and some Mothers about last nights pageant. And rather than doing a full page "thought", i'll focus on what bothered me the MOST. The girls did great, and i think there was ALOT of competition.. great job to the Ladies... but my beef is

THAT AWFUL OPENING NUMBER and the entire CHOREOGRAPHY.

Can we please try something different?

The girls spent half the time in laredo learning the steps to an Stomach-Ill routine that had no meaning.

How on earth are girls supposed to get into a competition mode with DISCO and to Pocohantas music ? OMG are you serious ?

Lets start from the beginning...

Tina Turner's "river deep mountain high". Good God of allll the power songs, diva songs and music in which a girl can work-it, in a time when all you have to do is get on myspace and limewire and SEARCH for a hot opening number... we go with Tina Turner's "river deep"....

..for the first part of the opening number go back and view that pageant, NOT ONE girls face could be seen, the camera crew was lost, and it was way too dark. WHY EVEN SPEND ALL THAT TIME REHEARSING if you cant even be seen by your family and friends?

...then we flip to "I've been to the Mountain", in which poor Atia Willis TRIED to WORK the heck out of it and obviously looked too over the top, because the song... well.. it sucked. Then ending with the song from "Step Mom" lol oh dear.

The singing Cadets have GOT to go.

But wait.. it gets worse... when I heard the POCAHANTAS song come alive during the gown presentation I lost it laughing. "... have you ever heard the wolf cry to the blue horn moon"....

Who's getting paid for this ?

Then lets just play the same music that we did a couple years ago and call it a Patriotic Finale.

TIME FOR CHANGE.

sorry to be so negative but the entry fees arent cheap and the TIME that these girls spend in laredo learning this stuff is Prescious. They can be doing other things. Both the San Antonio and the Austin pageants had a better opening number and gown presentation.

[> Subject: The DATED shows are likely why the pageant was not aired in all markets across the state. It was on a cable no name channel in DFW area when in years past it would have been on a major network channel

Not a big draw for networks to carry when it is soo hokie with the productions. Choreography was awful! Definately needs to be updated

[> Subject: I think that the Clarks don't want to spend the money to use updated songs. I assume that you have to pay the artist or music company some type of royalty to use their music and if that is true than it explains why we still have this tired production.

[> [> Subject: its simple, get some help from the people doing the Local pageants, or put together a runway show with ALL the girls like they did in Waco this year. Change it up. Heck... hookup ANYONE'S IPOD to a socket and let it play someone's classical "playlist"

[> Subject: You need to remember whom you're talking about...Al Clark! There are certain things that will not change. Mr. Flaming Choreographer, the stupid color-coded evening gown segment, to the patriotic segment we see each and every year. Why change...it's an Emmy winning show! You gotta love the old man, Al.

[> [> Subject: I'm not going to lie, my first year competing at Miss Texas USA I was SOOOO excited about that patriotic number. I mean, I think my heart MIGHT have popped out of my chest that night. It was after 9/11 and I had goosebumps and almost started crying during each rehearsal... so cheesy. I didn't realize that it was THE most overdone finale EVER. Doesn't take away from the meaning of the songs, but I think there are a million other patriotic songs besides "This land is your land, this land is my land.... " that they could choose from.
