  • Was told that the adjudicators don't like the rotating system, they prefer to feel that they selected the winners, being one of 9 or 15 opinions doesn't make they feel like they "owned" the competition. I get what they're saying, but I don't think it should matter how the judges feel; rotating panels are more neutral & produce a more fair result.     • I'm speaking from a neutral perspective here, but as subjective and unbiased as the adjudication of feisanna and majors may be, in the end, some people have been seen to say that personal preference plays some amount of a role in things.         • I think it's not necessarily loading his or her preferred competitor. Rather, it's just enjoying the style of the dancers that they like best; this may or may not affect the scoring (do I heck! It had better NOT affect the scoring at all, if those ADCRG's know what's good for them!). Like I said - it's not a definite thing. I saw it posted on DDN somewhere, I think.   • I don't think they can throw out the high and low score, at least the irish points score because many competitions top results are based on getting one 100. If you take that away, what happens to the competition where 5 different dancers each got 100's? Although it surely would help and be fair to the dancer with the one ridiculously low score.     • They used to use the throw out the high and low system at Worlds; it's a long time ago & I'm old so I don't remember a lot of it, but I think there were 7 judges; tossing the high & low helps prevent blatant favoritism or grudges, but it can also hurt kids who genuinely impress one just more than others.           • True, it isn't supposed to be about the judges' feelings. By the same token, at the Worlds level, most of the dancers are pretty spectacular. The difficulty is choosing the absolute best of the best out of 100 or so dancers. I guess it all boils down to what each judge is looking for, and what they personally see as "spectacular." Perhaps the idea behind a set panel is consistency: the judges are able to view dancers' performances in each round and then identify the competitor that they feel is the best all-round dancer. Maybe the thinking is that, at this level, no dancer should be dancing a "bad round." Just one way of looking at things... (NT) -- Dudley, 20:11:09 11/04/07 Wed
            • With a panel of 5 at AI's, all 5 judges gave their 100 to 5 different kids. If the high and low were thrown out, 3 of these dancers would not have been in the top 5.     • Exactly why I prefer rotating panels. Even if someone were to try to "do a favor" a favor in one round won't do as much damage to the overall results as one that is given for all rounds. It doesn't even apply to "favors"; certain judges prefer certain styles & if you are an athletic dancer w/a set panel where two prefer the more lyrical flowing style (or vice versa) you're sunk (NT) -- jmo, 14:47:10 14/04/07 Sat

• A dancer could be spectacularly good at soft shoe, but only 'good average' at heavy, then with rotating panel could get say, 500 for round 2 and go on to win the championship where the vote for the other rounds was split over several great heavy dancers.
