Subject: If you don't turn out from the hip, you leave yourself open to significant injury or later problems - Irish is more crossed, but the turnout still needs to come from the hip - find a good pilates instructor or physical therapist (see inside)
In reply to: Thanks 's message, "Turnout. For professional help on increasing turnout would you go to a podiatrist or physical therapist?" on 03:46:19 04/03/08 Thu

we have a pilates instructor who also works with our city's ballet, and she has put together workouts specifically for irish dancers which focuses on the things that we need to be able to do for Irish dancing (versus ballet or other types of dancing) and which addresses some of the overuse and stress injuries which Irish dancers tend to develop. The turn out still needs to come from the hip, but you then cross the legs over more than is done in ballet. Find a pilates instructor or therapist who has the training to put together a program that will work for what you need.

[> OP here. I have made an appointment in the first instance for a Physical Therapist - this week in fact. As it happens my son has quite a pronounced turn in on his right foot and I thought he would grow out of it but hasn't so although it will help his dancing my first priority is his walking. -- will keep you informed of progress, 18:21:50 04/15/08 Tue [1]
