Subject: To a certain extent that was the idea, the hunger strikers knew the British were likely to be totally intransigent so they would lay their deaths on their door and thus inspire/inflame a new generation to take up the cause. I'm surprised Thatcher never understood that, but then that's why the British and the Irish have had such trouble historically, because the British gov't. really never could wrap their mind around what the Irish were willing to do, even when the odds were stacked heavily against them.
