• When we first met Love, I had no idea he was going to turn into the type of person he was later revealed to be. Sure he would be something of a crooked politician, but no better or worse than most -- handing out favours where it would do him good, giving help to secure favours of his own in the future. • It's funny (or not, depending on your perspective, I guess), but I consider anything I learn from the books I read to be an added bonus because my main interest is always the characters and whether I feel connected to them. I have to care about the characters, experience them, live and breathe their sorrows, triumphs and loves, or the book just isn't the same for me. • I never realized how discriminated against the Irish were here. I had read and heard many stories but it just didn't click that it was so extensive. My Grandmother was first gen Boston-Irish who ended up moving out west. Whenever I would ask about that part of her life she would simply say "it was a long time ago" and change the subject. Guess I now know why. As for Lovett - all I can say is I was finding him an almost likeable sort until he asks Casey to join his "organization." Don't know why but that one word just screamed "mob, maffia, bad-guys" to me. Maybe it's from watching too many movies but wouldn't a politician say "our cause" or "our team"? • I found this chapter interesting because it shows Casey doing some big things for the cause. Up until then, I didn't see him doing much more than reaquainting himself with those of power inside Ireland (minus that trip right at the beginning of course). This is a big deal for him to cross the ocean and start networking with the US Irish. I was surprised at how well things went with Love and actually didn't get a terrible vibe from him.   • He wasn't actually meant to be more than a one time appearance, but he kind of just grew (like a horrible spider) and became an important part of the next book. He's an amalgam of Whitey Bulger and his brother Billy. Whitey was the most notorious gangster in Southie, and his brother Billy was in the Mass. legislature- and was crooked as sin.
