'Well but Not Wisely'

'Sedition, Jamie had long ago decided, was a most exhausting business and the complexities of it were best followed by a glass of whiskey, a volume of Keats and a stretch out on the sofa by the fire.'

Photobucket

Jamie's 'stretch out' is interrupted by an apparition called Casey, who believes he was summoned by Jamie. After letting him inside, they both quickly realize it was a trap.

The two wake up inside a deserted old barn where Casey promptly tells lays the reason for their capture at Jamie's feet. Casey proceeds to let Jamie know that he has an idea about what Jamie does on the side, getting to the point in a way only the Irish can, story-telling *g* and ends up referencing the 'Scarlet Pimpernel', which produces a sublte, but obvious response from Jamie.
They conclude that their abduction is likely the result of them asking to many questions regarding the train incident.

Jamie informs Casey that Pat is safe and staying with him - they talk about forgiveness.

Casey finds a wee bird hole in the ceiling and they make their escape, with only a few broken bones but many bruises and scrapes.

After finding their way to a nearby homestead, the two are fed, treated medically and allowed to rest by the farmer and his wife Nora.

We learn that Nora was a nurse during the Border Campaign and knew Casey's grandfather, Brendan. She is prompted to read their tea leaves as she did Brendan's.
Jamie's reading shows much pain but in the end happiness...and children. Nora's eyes get tired and blurry and she can not make heads or tails of Casey's leaves.
I can't remember if we've had this confirmed before or not - does Nora actually see something in Casey's cup that she just doesn't want to share? Or does she assume it will be bad and therefore doesn't want to attempt it?

After rest and healing Jamie and Casey set out for home. Along the way the two talk about their family's, their Father's deaths, an absent Mother and Colleen.
Casey tells Jamie he must get back into Belfast without anyone knowing and he has a plan :-)

*I thought it was going to be fairly easy to summarize this book, considering I've read it about 4 times now, but I had a tough time summarizing this chapter. I love when Jamie and Casey interact. I'm not highly educated but I'm pretty sure summarizing doesn't mean including every single word or conversation they have - I hang on every word and giggle..whether it's appropriate to giggle or not *g*
- so it was tough to 'stick to the facts ma'am' :-)*
