Chapter 37, 'Except Thou Bless Me'

'"And so as you can see," Pamela said from over the top of a currant scone, "the rumors of my death have been greatly exaggerated."'

Photobucket

Pamela is alive and so is Casey.

Maggie has made a big breakfast for everyone at the Resurrectionist Church. Father Terry notices no one is talking about their whereabouts the night before. Jamie and Pat were both missing for periods of time and Pamela contends she doesn't remember what happened before being dropped off at the church.

We learn that the corpse Casey carried from his home was that of Bernie, the Constable.
Pamela, in an attempt to 'let go', be free, visits the body and Jamie finds her there. Pamela blesses Bernie and Jamie curses him.

The British come to Belfast. They are sent in to keep the peace and to ostensibly guard the segregated communities against civil war.
This is what burns my arse:
Marches/demonstrations were banned for the Catholics yet the other side held regularly scheduled marches, which more often than not ended in the kind of violence we witnessed in yesterdays chapter. Yet...'Under the Special Powers Act twenty-four Republicans were interned for suspected activities.' They were taken from their homes and detained for what? Defending themselves and their neighborhoods? Ha, I told you these chapters tend to make me angry *g* I'm not saying the IRA were totally blameless, but can you imagine, after years and years of this kind of treatment, NOT doing something to fight back?

Sylvie has moved to Belfast - Patrick, after some needlin' from Casey, finally kisses her.

We end with the Duke of Dungarvon and his evil guest. The Duke intends to poison the 'guest' but the tables get turned and the Duke drinks from the wrong cup.
I'm not sure I remember what the plan was here. They are in cahoots and have used Jamie (or think they have) as a tool. What were their intentions? What were they trying to accomplish?

Note: I'll be posting another chapter this afternoon.
