• 2. Funny, I never thought of Pamela not being born in Ireland as a sin or that is was her fault. I didn't fully realize that Pamela felt this way until you mentioned the quote Mahri. I can understand her not getting the rules, social or political, but I'm not sure if it's naivety. I think there is something more. Maybe it's her outlook on life, her beliefs and what she wants from life and for her life with Casey? • 3. First, that rift between Casey and Pamela was heartbreaking to go through. I think Pamela had to tell Casey in her own time. Unfortunately, it took a long time but I can understand why. I suppose it takes everyone varying lengths to get to that point and I suppose some never do. I know the idea is to spare your husband or wife pain, but I think a marriage dying and the after effects cause more pain than the 'secret'. I'm rambling, sorry. I would come clean and work on healing and if it's a true love, the healing will happen. I would trust and respect my husband and not decide something for him. I think you have to put yourself in the shoes of Pamela and her past here- Casey is all the family she has, she's been alone so long she's terrified of losing him and she knows how territorial he feels about her and how much he hated Love Hagerty. So I think she feels this is a case of he's better off not knowing, even though it really hurts her and bothers her to keep it from him. She'd rather carry the burden though than lose him altogether. To me it's not out of character because Casey is still quite young here, and though he's usually one to deal with things, way down deep in a place he doesn't want to look at too hard, he maybe knows that he doesn't really want to know what's wrong. There is maybe a certain amount of naivete in Pamela still concerning the Irish situation, but not so much really, it's more that she's headstrong and often just does things without thinking them entirely through. • 72.1) I don't see the outburst from Casey as much out of character as Pamela's telling him not to bother coming back. I don't defend Casey's hostility in this chapter but there is high tension all around them following Bloody Friday, someone had just referred to his wife as the enemy's whore, and he'd just been in a heated fight over it. Add to it the knowledge that the IRA was keeping tabs on her, and I think it would be a rare husband who wouldn't be pissed at his wife right about now.   • Pamela's statement here caught me off guard too Elaine. I'm thinking that, sometimes, if you can't or won't admit to your own faults, it's easier to turn it back on the other person.     • It's such a natural thing to happen in the midst of an argument. It's probably happened to most of us at one time or another. It just seemed like such a hasty, knee-jerk response from Pamela, who was, after all, being interrupted from a chore that she regarded as tranquil and calming. It led me to believe she's really as angry at herself as she is at Casey. And not just for the Boston thing with Love, but also with sneaking off to 'chase rabbits,' as Casey might perceive it. • 72.2) In Boston, Casey was out of his element. In Ireland, Pamela is perhaps not entirely out of her element, but she's not well-versed. I think she does go where angels should fear to tread, but there's that stubborn willfulness she's famous for. If Bloody Friday hadn't happened, and if other troubles weren't visiting them so close to home (Pat), I don't think Casey would have reacted so strongly. • 72.3) No choice for me - I'd keep my mouth shut. Not only to protect Casey, though. I'm afraid that letting the truth escape my lips would be enough to do me in, that by hearing myself speak it I would indict myself far worse than anybody else's judgment. Even though it seemed (to Pamela) to be the right thing at the right time, if she truly felt her relationship with Love Hagerty was justifiable, she would not be defensive or feel remorse.
