• PLEASE, I don't want to be the only one to play again today. HELP someone! (45-1) I would have been scared sh*tless if I were in Pamela's shoes! I was expecting trouble for her, since our illustrious author doesn't shy away from *ahem* difficult situations. (45-2) The source of the information could be an honest RUC member, if they exist, but the timing is unclear. Casey is incarcerated now, so perhaps this gives the informant an opportunity to approach Pamela which would not otherwise be available. • (46-1) I was surprised that Pat more than suspected his father's death was not accidental. Brian's death seems to be a taboo topic for Casey, something he is uncomfortable talking about with Pat, which I can kind of understand, but he's usually honest with Pamela. Even after all these years, the subject is still raw with Casey. Casey may be protecting Pamela from the knowledge that his father was deliberately killed and more targets may be on Casey's back than Pamela even suspects. (NT) -- Denise, 10:34:20 09/29/07 Sat
  • Back in EU when Casey remarked that his dad was a bomb expert and that he doubted it was an accident, I always thought that Casey thought Brian had committed suicide and Casey was hurt in that it seemed his dad had abondoned them. Right after that was when Casey made his illfated choice to do the job that landed him in prison and I always chalked that up to his pain. Am I the only one who thought Casey saw it as suicide?         • He worried that his father had, indeed, commited a form of suicide, but at a instinctual level knew it wasn't in his father's nature to do so. He tried to disguise this fear from Pat though, as he wanted Pat to think it was accidental, but as pointed out, Pat is very intuitive and there aren't too many smokescreens the boy can't see through. • 46.1 I suppose I was a littley bit surprised but when I really thought about it, then no, I wasn't. Children hear more than adults realize and Pat is an introspective person (to me anyway) and I think he thought a lot of things and was able to put two and two together, even at a young age. The Riordan boyos are emotionally intelligent each in his own way. Perhaps his ability for reflection and internalizing has provided him with a comfort that has so far elluded Casey. I think they dealt with Brian's death in different ways and neither was worse or better, just different. 46.2 I think it was more than an observation. If it was only that, then Pat would have kept it to himself I think. • (46-2) I didn't intrepret Pat's comment in a negative way. He's friends with Jamie, understands him to be a totally honourable man, If that were not the case, Pat's comment might mean that he worries that Jamie and Pamela could take things too far. Any way you look at it, it's an unusual situation, a juggling act of sorts, that proves difficult for Jamie, Pamela and Casey to maintain in a delicate balance of necessity, friendship, respect and love.   • I agree; I don't see it as negative. Its the facts plain and simple and Pat sees that like he sees most things. It isn't easy for Casey. It wouldn't be easy for anyone to have thier spouse involved in such a friendship, one charged with intense sexual attraction and an open declaration of love. That's the truth and Pamela can't deny it. But Pat doesn't blame Pamela just as Casey doesn't. I am musing here but in writing this I started to wonder if this smoldering attraction to Jamie that even Casey can't put out, may be the rub when Casey thinks of Pamela and Love- its as if, Casey isn't enough for her.       • A betrayal with Jamie would be a very different thing- because it would be a betrayal of the heart, not merely of the body. I think Casey knows that neither Jamie nor Pamela would do that- it would mean too much. Jamie doesn't want a woman who is tied to another man. Casey has had to accept Jamie as part of Pamela's life as a simple matter of the fact that more than his love, she needs Jamie's friendship. He also trusts Jamie implicitly with Pamela, something that irks him, but that he also counts upon when he cannot be there. Things change a great deal in this third novel- the shift in balance between the three etc. Casey is very much a MAN now, boyhood is gone completely from him and he moves to a different place in his life, if that's not too cryptic.       • I know what you mean Denise, but there are some basic similarities, older, attractive, rich, powerful, involved in politics and Jamie can be quite ruthless when need be. In many ways Casey is still finding his way in the world and as some have said he seemed sullen in Boston. • Chap 45 Q1) I thought she was playing with fire, perhaps even playing into a plot to have her arrested so the British could use treatment of her as leverage against Casey. I do understand why she was doing it though. With Casey in jail and Pat under constant surveillance and no role for her in their release or clearance, and Jamie and Casey keeping details from her, it became a way she could do SOMETHING. She did for herself for a very long time, then had a very active role in Boston and now she's helpless and of little use to those she loves. 2) I couldn't fathom who might be sending Pamela this information, or why, unless it was to entrap her as I mentioned in the first question. • Chapt. 46 Q1) I wasn't too surprised that Pat had some inkling that things weren't as they were told. Pat (and Casey) aren't fools and they know how life works in Belfast. I was a little surprised that Casey hadn't told Pamela a little more given how open their relationship had been before Boston. 2) I think Pat is letting her know that he knows and understands what's between Pamela and Jamie, as well as the fact that Casey is aware.
